How Kyrie Irving Became The Most Polarizing Player in the NBA

Kyrie Irving's controversial career is known for a few things: his incredible skills and highlights, his winning pedigree, and of course, the drama and confusion surrounding his character and personality. He began as the heir to LeBron James' throne in Cleveland, and once the king arrived, the duo seemed like a match made in heaven. They won a ring in 2016, but what followed this success was overwhelming drama. Why did Kyrie request a trade in 2017 from Cleveland? Why did his career in Boston crumble so quickly? Why did he and James Harden develop beef in just under a year? This is how Kyrie Irving became the most polarizing player in the NBA.

Kyrie is like the kanye of basketball, so much talent but his ability is overlooked due to his attitude and what he does away from the court, his best days were his early ones yet he will always be considered great if not polarising

@@msj8601 the media is reporting the narrative, not creating it. The media didnt trade kyrie from the cavs to the celtics, then to the nets. Years ago reports came out of how much of a headache kyrie was on the cavs. And recently kyrie himself admitted to it. He went to boston and was toxic on and off the court. He made the coaches, teammates, fan base miserable. Then went to the nets and repeated the same thing. Looking forward to which stupid team takes him next. Theyll have a press conference and kyrie will talk about how much hes changed and looking forward to playing on a new team, then he will disappear and do his drama queen routine all over again.

I think a small but important point u missed is remember when the reporter asked Kyrie if he saw LeBron as a father figure and Kyrie said he only had one father Drederick Irving. The media wanted Kyrie to worship LeBron like they did, to the point of almost calling Kyrie his son where to Kyrie it’s like no I’m also a great player. I can understand the frustrations of both sides but I think highlighting that one moment from the media and the questions and narratives they tried to push strained the relationship further than it necessarily needed.

As a basketball player, Kyrie’s talent is absolutely unquestionable. He makes playing the game straight of effortless But it’s everything else that has people looking at him differently, from telling Celtics fans he wanted to stay only to switch up like two months later to the way him being the leader of that team went to everything that’s happened with Brooklyn so far. As good as he is, I feeling his off court actions/antics have a tendency to overshadow that-the fact that he gets injured fairly often doesn’t really help

Imo as great as a player as Kyrie was, I think him being young and being overconfident in himself and wanting to be the number 1 option was his undoing. If you playing with an unselfish legendary talent in LeBron , you do it without any problem. Because winning will come out of that. Then you go to Boston and when you are the number 1 option you fold and leave. Everybody cannot be a championship number 1 option and its okay. All that should matter is working together and winning and if you are a great player , the impact will always be there

I don’t get why people say he turned his back on Boston when he said “if y’all want me back I’ll resign” but it was obvious the Celtics didn’t want him back. I’ve always been intrigued by Kyrie’s lack of self awareness at the end of his run with the Cavs. He went from the basement of the East to competing for 2 NBA titles with Lebron. You could even say Lebron set him up in a way that enabled him to get to be the number 1 guy somewhere else, but yet he always came back at Lebron so negatively… never made sense to me how hard he bit the hand that feed him.
@TheArmchairgm
@TheArmchairgm Год назад
That's what did it for me, also. LeBron almost won the title by himself the year before against, he was that formidable. So Irving plays the next year, they win, and Irving spazzes out. I get that the "Is Lebron your daddy" question probably infuriated him. But, to the point of destroying that Cavs team? C'mon Kyrie, man, damn....

Kyrie reminds me of Antonio Brown in many ways. Both players might be the most skilled athletes at their positions that i have ever seen, but their off-court/off-field antics seem to get in the way of winning over the long-haul. I know circumstances are different with the two of them (AB probably has some form of CTE), but the outcome is the same - they just can't seem to get out of their own way.
@davidfoster2629

@Lion78 y’all baby Kyrie cuz he can hoop his ass off. The man only stands for things that directly effect him. Sure he’s done a few activism things here and there, but so has literally every other black star athlete to some extent. He’s no martyr. He didnt lace up cuz he didn’t want to get vaxxed, and he had (rightfully so) taken time off for mental health. Thats all fine… but don’t sit here and act like he’s not collecting checks from the very people who perpetuate and sustain the engine of systemic racism, appropriation and oppression. Stop riding

After his tenure in Boston, he's at home in Brooklyn. He's a 2nd option behind KD. He's strictly business w/ the NBA becuase that is his job. Man's comfortable. Not defending nor bashing him, he has his bag, endorsements, and future. We didn't know that he'll be that person back in 2016. His true colors were were shown.
