I took these maps because this is the only map that has southern lands, and which in general did not seem bad to the piranhas. And also because it was made by the WoG admin Don Esteban. No, it looks like I cut out the part where I said that this map is not canon. But it doesn't matter, since I already wrote to people about this map, and I even wrote it in a separate thread on WoG many times.
Everything is alright. You don't have to explain yourself. 🙂 The southern lands on the map are partly or completely from Arcania. Therefore not by Piranha Bytes.
Add Yakuza to the list. The map can be crossed in less than 3 minutes, and you will see the exact same map in every game. But it's filled to the brim with Side quests, encounters, shops and minigames.
And that is the way it's always should've been, but triple A games focus on completely wrong aspects. No real variety, all of those big maps feel like nothing-burgers. It's boring, promoting overreliance on fast travel and ignoring the backdrop of the game, instead of instilling sense of scale and wonder in the player.
As see in gothic itself, small maps filled to the brim with stuff of gothic 1 and 2 is a bilion times better than a big map of gothic 3 filled with NOTHING AT ALL
Hello, just want to add something to Gothic 1. There are many areas, that are not on the map, but you can play there. You spend a lot of time in caves like old dungeon or ending part. So that is why it is bigger then it looks.
The map comparisons with other games are completely out of scale... You try to tell me that whole gothic world is smaller than market square in Novigrad? Or Imperial City Island?
Size doesn't matter since huge empty space it's a waste of time for the player, makes travel time much longer and it's ignored space. I prefer the small size of maps from Gothic 1 and 2 with lots of carefully hand crafter word compared to huge emptines, with random generated quests for the other games that you show at the end.

I wanted to surprise the team by making everything quickly. EvilTwin later had to make a trick of modifying the meshes a bit so it looks a tiny bit more decent..
I would say game is scaled down like most games from actual vision, same World of Warcraft or GTA game cities are. Meaning it would be those 4 square kilometers in full scale
I showed the map of Velen and Novigrad. However, in kilometers, I had to enter all the cards in Witcher 3. Kaer Morhen, White Garden, Skellege Archipelago, and Toussaint. I just couldn't find a map that would have all the locations together, and at the same time they kept their proportions. So imagine that the map of Velen and Novigrad is ALL locations of The Witcher 3 together ¯ \ _ (ツ) _ / ¯
Хм, на 1:04 видно, что используется рендер в изометрической проекции. Значит, есть меш локации. Вопрос: зачем тогда вся эта морока с подсчётом шагов и откладыванием отрезков в растровом редакторе? В 3d-софте измерения получатся намного проще и точнее. К тому же так можно найти высоту рельефа и зданий, довольно точно рассчитать проходимую площадь локаций, даже определить объём и прикинуть массу интересующих объектов. Такого в игре сделать никак не получится. Я сам этим занимался с различными готическими моделями.

The comparison of Khorinis and the Witcher 3 map is wrong. I'm pretty sure that 135km^2 is all areas of The Witcher 3 combined (velen with novigrad, skellige isles, kaer morhen valley, etc.) In your comparison whole island of Khorinis seems smaller than most of the buildings in Novigrad which is just not true.
Well you just assume a step is a meter? When you round up the first unit you use, the result is really inaccurate. Also you have different step animations in Gothic 2. Is it really the same lenght?
Piranha Bytes could make an awesome standalone game if it took place in the old camp! Quality over quantity. Better than those soulless mindless huge open worlds of modern games. 🙏
Irdorath, according to official information, is located somewhere between Khorinis, and the eastern archipelago The Witcher 3 has a huge world with many locations. I took one of the map as an indicator that this is a witcher 3. But the size applies to all territories. I just couldn't fit ALL the locations of the Third Witcher on one screen :)
@@Flatczer so you have to adapt the number or the size of both maps. In this 136km² is Skellige, Toussaint, Kaer Morhen included and maybe the water where you can travel with your boat(not sure about that). This comparasion is just wrong and irritating, sorry

Пробелов в игровом дизайне было гораздо меньше, чем сейчас. Например, когда нам дали Скайрим с его столицей, в которой обитает человек сто, или Имперский Город.. в общем, внимание к деталям и к игровому пространству - это важно.

Skyrim might be bigger, but its incredibly boring and feels copypasted to degree similar to Gothic 3 map, that i just rely on fast travel. While Gothic always feels nice to travel around and unique whereever you go. Like small village or town from you childhood. It's much better to have small and interesting map that you want to travel around than hollow giant maps. This is why size comparisons always rub me the wrong way as its least important aspect of maps in games. It's about variety, interesting locations and terrain, details, and instead of actually big size, creating real sense of scale and wonder in the player. Gothic succeed at all of this, where many other games overreliant on size fail. Besides vast majority of those "world sizes" are incredibly inaccurate and overstated, in similar fashion to lore size in Gothic. There is no standard and uniform scale used in game worlds in each engine, their approximations of metric system are often times incredibly inaccurate and inconsistent from one game to the next and should not be taken at face value, but tested in similar way as sized in Gothic, in relation to player characters or if its possible something easier to attest like perhaps vehicle dimensions if its more modern game.

Bo te porównania z innych gier mają skalę wyciągniętą z dupy zazwyczaj, to głupoty które wykrakali by się popisywać na E3 gdy w praktyce mapa jest mniejsza, to że jeszce jest tak martwa jak w oblivionie, sprawia że podróżowanie w tesie jest okropnie nudne i dlatego przez większość czasu fast travel się używa. Oblivion jest dosłownie przykładem kopiuj wklej, oceany tych samych drzew po horyzont. Taki sam test przydałby się w każdej grze by zweryfikować te głupoty, bo mapa w oblivionie na pewno jez 4 razy mniejsza niż te "57km kwardratowych. Poza tym w każdym silniku inaczej sobie skalę ustawiają, metr metrowi nie równy, raczej umowny i nawet do rzeczywistości nie zbyt dobrze wyskalowany. Ja osobiście wolę mniejsze ale "gęstsze". Różnorodność i interesujące lokacje są znacznie lepsze niż ocean niczego. Dlatego też wolę mapę w nfsach np z Most Wanted'a 2005 niż te nudne spaghetti z ulic w nowych NFSach. Gdzie wszędzie jest płaski asfalt i nudne zakręty i nic ciekawego czy szczególnie innego/unikalnego nie map między rejonami.
When comparing with other game sizes, it would be visually more informational to scale the gothic-map with the square root of the size ratio.. Here it looks as if a house in novigrad is about the size of the gothic map
This is a relative proportional size. Because unfortunately I found maps of all locations of The Witcher 3, on one map together. And if I did, it would be just a map of the continent, because they are located very far from each other. And visually, Khorinis would have been bigger than Velen, for example. Which is also not very correct
For shooting the frames in mine Valley, the was used mod "awakening" . And for shooting shots from Gothic 2, the "Nostalgy" mod was used. As far as I know, this mod is only in Russian. But I'm not sure.
