You have absolutely no idea how great I'm feeling by just looking at you speaking so passionately about language learning. I just got goosebumps... (the good kind) And I think whenever I encounter bumps in the road in the future, for learning languages, I'm gonna come back to this video, watch it again, and get a boost!

Agreed being multilingual has shaped my identity in ways I could NEVER imagine!

I had the same exact experience just yesterday, with my Mandarin. The first time being in a room where so much of mandarin (with some Korean) was being spoken. I could somewhat follow the conversation, honestly I'm quite proud of myself, but oml it was exhausting. I've learnt a lot about Taiwan and it's people. The amount of respect and acceptance i felt was awesome. I'm now still hungover and still studying from the motivation last night gave me. 加油加油

Good for you for your experience in Lyon with the lyonnais! My word, we are one of the most closed off people in France! I was born and live in Lyon and I know several foreigners and witnessed their struggle to make friends and settle in!

I had a hint of what you experienced in Romanian, but I wasn't quite at the level to follow everything, but it was definitely surreal ! It was like tuning into a very narrow radio frequency and hearing things in clear detail!

Im sitting here feeling like you are talking about me, especially in the beginning with feeling like I wasnt clever enough and felt like I sucked at everything, and here I am now, as an English person, fluent in European Portuguese and working on my Swedish and French, omg this really hit me, thanks for the video

It's getting late and I decided to watch this video instead of reading my Korean version of Harry Potter and I'm glad I did. Your video is really inspiring but also a little humbling. You've got more than a lifetime of language learning already under your belt and you're not even 30 yet. At least we have one thing in common. A proper appreciation of coffee.

I really can relate to that "barrier going down" feeling. My chinese isn't on THAT high of a level but it is enough to socialize and I spent a lot of time getting to know the culture, doing some kung fu, some circus, eating all the local food.. My best friend I made there was my roommate in a language school I was in for a month and we were the only chinese / foreign "couple" that ended up spending our entire freetime together and even doing weekend trips out of the city. We would naturally flow between speaking some English and then again chines so we both improved together and it was no "oh we must talk X for half an hour then the other one gets their turn"... But just authentic conversations where one of us would not be able to express ourselves perfectly at some point, switch to our mothertongue mid sentence and then we'd get stuck in that languahe for a while until if would happen to the other person and wemd switch back. She was so thrilled about me not shying back from eating all sorts of organs when we went for hot pot 😂 Or eating duck tongues or necks.. We would eat with her other chinese friends and they all welcomed me as partnof the group and even while my chinese wasn't that perfect they all had worse english than my chinese so they really had a high appreciation of my efforts to learn their language and culture. I'm even invited to stay with her famoly for a while if I return to China so I could improve even more with them being my hostfamily

One of my biggest problems is I don´t have enough money to travel around the and sharing experiences with foreing speakers. I´m improving my English alone to have a high level and I want to give all I´ve been learnig for so much time in those people and feeling that the effort was so worth. Nice video by the way!!!

I love learning natural languages, but for me the sensation of my cognitive skills expanding day by day came from learning a particular programming language: Haskell.

Robin, I agree that living abroad doesn't mean that someone will become fluent in a language automatically. I've been living abroad for many years and I don't find myself fluent in the language by any means. I'd rather say, I've gained practical level but not fluent and that's only thanks to my effort. I'm still pretty far from a proficiency, however, I've been working on it. I like your videos that are so inspiring and joyful to listen to.

Since I started working I've been feeling like time is slipping away (I work in IT as well) and I've been struggling to practice my language skills. The only language I have actually learnt to full fluency is English (I am even told I sound English when I speak), however, I started really learning English at the age of 10, so I could not really appreciate the fact of being surrounded by English for the first time until I got to go to university in Scotland, which wasn't as exciting for the language, but more for the experience of living alone for the first time. I am a polyglot, because I speak 4 languages, but 3 of them are my native languages... Now I am learning Japanese and I really hope I'll be able to get to the level I have achieved in English

I have a question. I am using anki to remember vocabulary And people says that always use sentences instead of single word but the problem is whenever that card comes i recognize the card by looking at other words in the sentence. For example i want to learn the word Owner So i makes a card- this car has no owner But the problem is whenever that card comes i recognize the "this car has no" part and gusse that next word has to be owner. But i dont remmeber the word owner. I dont know if i was able to explain it since my english is not good

I have a "daily question" if you don't mind. Do you have some Cypriot in your ancestry? You kind of look a bit like and sound a bit like singer Cat Stevens who apparently had some Cypriot ancestry. This is by no means a criticism by the way - your videos are Always inspiring and potentially life changing. It's just that Cat Steveness about you that I can't figure out;-)

The coffee as a prop requires almost as much skill a becoming a polyglot...lol. You obviously love both, and a people person. Interesting, language learning enabled your growth, yet you work in IT. I've seen this, polyglots who do it for love, not money.
