as a leeds fan who had to live through this nightmare he gives a pretty fair perspective .staying up under jessie felt like living a miricle and the 22/23 season felt like hell so very glad as a club we are past that
Realistically you're a championship club who won't spend money. Marsch wasn't your issue, the americans funny enough have proven to be since they left beyond your club. The team just doesn't have the depth to make a prolonged stay in the prem and never will until they convince young prem talent to stick it out for more than a season to try and stay up.
@@TheGLORY13 What the fuck are you talking about? Marsch's tactics were utterly diabolical. It was literally get everyone to stand in the middle, kick it forwards even if you're going to lose the ball and don't bother defending the wings. It was too easy to play against and nowhere near creative enough. His answer to why things were going wrong was - "they're stressed". The guy is an absolute clown. They players that were brought into his squad were an absolute disaster and have proven themselves to be a disgrace after jumping ship immediately after taking the club down. Especially the Americans. Adams has never played, Aaronson isn't wanted by anyone and McKennie can frankly just fuck off after his embarrassing display for us. Realistically, you're a clueless Yank who needs to focus on talking about a sport you actually understand, like handegg.
Yo can you do a Union Berlin Video? From 2. Bundesliga to Champions League in 5 years abd then the sudden drop off to relegation fight althought they brought in stars like Bonucci, Volland and Gosens. Would be an interesting video.
Union Berlin getting relegated this season if they lose? Reminds me of Villarreal in 11/12. They did this after crashing out in the Champions League group stage, IIRC.
short story, those transfers were the reason. While I don't lay it at the feet of those players instead of management, these players completely ruined the payroll structure and came into a club and wrecked the hierarchy in the locker room.
They are looking pretty solid being in a play off final right now and if they can get a Marcelo or a Patrick Viera or maybe keep there guy now next season. If they get promoted and play there cards right I think they could stay up. I mean they thrashed Norwich 4 - 0 at home in the semis. This is coming from a Manchester city fan btw.
Never commented how good your music selection is, not just in this video in particular but in general, I can tell you put a lot of effort into your videos, keep it up with the W content
Thank you for making this. I find it hard to articulate my feelings about Marsch at times without breaking social boundaries. Watching you (someone who isn't a fan) slowly lose their mind during the rundown of his time at Leeds was so close to my own experience I can now just point to this video and say, "Basically that"
Wasn't exactly a big bottle this season. They did bottle by losing to Aston Villa and West Ham and not beating Manchester City. Apart from that, commendable effort 👏. So, Arsenal have a much smaller bottle this time.
As an American Leeds supporter, I threw my hands up when they hired Marsch. Under another manager, the we might have had a chance, but Marsch’s “system” was doomed from the off. And the Ted Lasso thing, it’s just insulting to Lasso. At least Ted learned a lesson and made wholesale changes to his tactics. Jesse was too busy playing Tony Robbins.
Marsch certainly wasn't blameless for Leeds's disaster but he was less to blame then many people would say and I still wish he was the national team coach
An American manager that hops around 5 leagues then makes it to the prem and think motivation and 1 tactic will work.... sounds like an FM save gone wrong lol
Canada plays like Leeds. Im hoping he can learn to adjust his tactics when the time is called upon. He has Canada's faithful happy with him now, but we will see if he has learned anything.
The plot twist of Ted Lasso was that despite Ted not knowing about Football, he knew people and how to get the best out of them. That was how Ted was able to unite his team behind him. Plus the fact Coach Beard is a complete sports nerd and learned every Football tactic he could before coming to the UK and that is how you get the Ted Lasso show. In real life something like Ted Lasso maybe could work but just not at the Premiere League Level or even Championship.
in the recap of when you talked about where the americans are now you make it seem like aaronson didn’t do anything in berlin, however he made those fans fall in love with him for his effort and creativity
It's not anti American...but I couldn't watch this video after Jesse Marsch was on it. He's all talk and no output. Brilliant speaker and if I wanna sell ice to eskimos I'll hire Jesse.
This is the kind of situation where a club like Leeds United can be in that sort of mess despite being one of the most successful English clubs historically is remarkable.
Jesse Marsch was right about Matteus Klich too, he went to MLS and was terrible lol. Also this guy is crediting Marsch for signings, but many of them weren't Marsch. He didn't want Rutter, he wanted DeKetelare. Some of this video is right, but much of it is colored to tell the story Maqwell wanted to tell.
The media 's Marsch propaganda actually tricked me . I thought he was a manager who isolated players and just a bad coach ( the leipzig reign helped that) . I now see it a bit differently, he's a chill bloke , albeit stubborn
I think these two years are gonna put a bad taste of Americans in English teams mouths. Leeds got regulated, Nottingham on the edge of regulation, and Fulham bottom of the table.
Jesse speaking that English/German pidgin was actually painful 😖😣 For the first (and hopefully last) time, I'm sorry Brits. My accent ain't great but i will do better in the future
He was made fun of by being an American who knew very little about soccer, and he shocked everyone by taking Richmond to the top divisions of English soccer with how much he actually knew. That’s how Leeds United should work.
Tbf what he is, is a excellent man manager who uses his extreme likeability to surround himself with people who actually know the sport and goes along with what they say. So idk maybe they should try that
He would have kept them up if he replaced Marsch and not Garcia. When we (Newcastle) played them they looked a solid team however it was too little too late
Jesse is a cool dude, during his (short) stint at Leipzig he randomly showed up in a supporters pub one day and had a beer with the fans. Heard similar stories from his time in Salzburg. Not a whole lot of managers do that nowadays. Sadly tactics-wise he's a one-trick pony and completely freezes up when his approach is countered 😕
Going to a fan bar might have helped ingratiate himself with some fans, but being from the US means he was always going to struggle maintaining that support if the team wasn’t showing improvement.
Actual Leeds fan here, I always quite liked Marsch until he left and now he it seems like he cant stop talking about us. Tyler Adams was amazing MOT!!!!!!
How was the presentation? I usually don't like this guy's political persuasion in the videos but I stopped after 0:20 after hearing him say he doesn't care enough about Leeds to pay attention. I know enough as a supporter that I feel I don't need an outsider's opinion. Hence why I am asking yours on his presentation. Hope all is well. Let's turn Wembley to Elland Rd for a day. MOT/ALAW
I miss Bielsa at Leeds like you wouldn't believe. Hindsight only strengthens these feelings. Real mistake he personally made was not abuse the Prem rules and get matches called off/delayed on Covid claims (e.g. like Arsenal and other teams did in that season multiple times). If only we really did "sacka da board"
Petition to make these videos: 1.Bayer Leverkusen's Invincibles (will be made if they won Europa and DFB Pokal as well). 2.Arsenal's Legacy of Failures (only if City won the Premier League today).
Serious question are all RB school coaches just unable to admit their mistakes and adapt to their circumstances? I’m living through the same thing with Schmidt at Benfica it’s killing me
It was going to be tough for anyone to follow Bielsa, Marsch didn't help himself by bringing in a Weston McKennie that didn't seem interested, Brandon Aaronson that just runs a lot, it's not an American thing, nobody had a problem with Tyler Adams, Marsch's biggest problem is he's quite one dimensional, he knows that Red Bull way and that's all, he needs to figure out a plan B
The next American dream did happen. At PSV Earnie Stewert: owner that fled the usmnt after the giogate blackmail bs they also have 3 americans (technically 4 but richy ledezma never played) they just won the league!
What is with these RB schools same thing is happening with Benfica with Roger Schmidt except way worst you could make a video comparing the last season vs this season of Benfica crazy downfall or even a season of the Liga Portugal from the crazy things with Porto, Benficas downfall and Gyokeres clapping all our cheeks 😢
To be fair at least benfica challenged Sporting for the title. Porto decided that being 20 points behind Benfica and Sporting while collecting reds like they were Pokémon cards was the way forward, lol
All American "superstars" that come to the Premier league flop, Pulisic had almost 100 games and only scored 20 goals, Mckennie was probably one the worst and slowest midfielders in the premier league, Aaronson historic leeds transfer record was the worst rated premier league player of the season e.t.c 😂
You thread the needle nicely here, and I can definitely see elements of Tac & Ellis’ perspectives on it and I applaud you for speaking with them both. You pretty much summed it up perfectly. Marsch was not 100% to blame, but his rigid (and ineffective) tactics and lack of adjustments got found out quickly and you did well to point out that his constant optimism got incredibly tiresome, even for an American Leeds supporter who wanted this to succeed badly. That being said, the board should bear the majority of the blame. For not sacking Marsch sooner, for letting him get his players in and giving him one game past the transfer window and then sacking him, for not buying a LB and a ST (which we all knew we needed all the way back in the summer heading into that season), not shoring up a horrible back line, firing Marsch without having a realistic replacement lined up…the list goes on and on. Thankful this chapter is over. Looking forward to Wembley and heading back where we belong!
Marsch’s arrogance set the perception of US soccer back a decade. People claimed bielsa forced a style of football when in reality it was the style that best fit his players. He brought in big club rejects with decent technical ability but athletic deficiencies and created a way for them to be effective against the biggest teams England. Marsch came in, took Bielsa recruits and ran an advanced zonal press that required athletes. The results were ultimately disastrous and he often blamed players after losses.
Before clicking, I thought this was going to be about why Leeds was popular in US & Canada in the 90's. Growing up I remember seeing Leeds hats and jerseys very common.
Thanks for the video, as a Leeds fan this was a pretty accurate depiction of what went on that season, March was terrible he had no clue about how to change a formation to get the best out the team, he went from a team who all the best players were wingers to the narrow "Penis" formation as we all called it, I can't put all the blame on him he should have been replaced long before he was sacked.
He did change things up, it didn't matter because your #9 was terrible and the only other scoring option was jack harrison, who couldn't score. Then your Center backs were completely terrible and you were relying on a 22 year old 120lb. midfielder to carry.
Having survived the Marsch era personally, I'd agree he only had a set style but that's a lot of managers tbf. I think his biggest mistakes were making comments regarding Bielsa's training methods, accusing him of "over training" players, it pissed off a lot of Leeds fans and was used as a stick to beat him with when some players seemed like they couldn't go 100% for 90 minutes. He also made some rather interesting training ground changes, removing player rest facilities to build a larger press conference room was a very bold choice in the summer and again left some people feeling he was out of touch. I do genuinely believe he could make a good international manager though, he talks a good game and does seem like he can motivate a team at times, hope Canadian fans are ready to hear how "the goal is in the middle of the pitch" to justify a narrow playing style though.
Really loved how you went a bit deeper into the tactics in this video essay to show not just that marsh’s team didn’t win, but WHY they didn’t win. Awesome stuff man
0:45 tbf i could name every shoutout maqwell does from the top of my head from just how many times he says it also, every time Janos Balasz isn't the first to get shouted out, it feels weird lol
Good luck Southampton in the play off final next weekend....Hope to see the saints back in the Premier League...F*ck Leeds United.....Manchester United forever 🔴🔴🔴
Tbh, I felt Leeds United fans are the second most delusional fanbase after Man United or maybe Arsenal. What's worse is that they have been this delusional since at least the 1970s, back during the Don Revie "Dirty Leeds" era. When they achieve success, they like to shxttalk their rivals, and when they don't, they start becoming delusional while throwing people under the bus. People forget Peter Ridsdale's Champions League gamble and it's ultimate failure was in part fuelled by Leeds fans' unfounded sense of superiority and a belief they're better than what their team actually were. In short, since the 1970s, Leeds certainly has been the most chaotic football club in England
