I’m inclined to agree with one of the above posters - it’s possible he just took the test over and over until he passed. That’s still possible here in California (reputed to be the toughest bar exam in the nation). You can take the exam as many times as you want until you pass. I’ve known people who took it six or seven times before passing, and they went on to work for good firms and have successful careers. Occasionally thieves and cheats will actually do something honest.

That makes sense. You pass the bar exam in 1978, you get a piece of paper that says you passed the exam and you get your name in a record that nobody checks unless they have a good reason. Forgery takes care of the piece of paper, and being a conman makes sure that nobody checks the record until you're ready to leave town.

If someone were to take that check from your job, and forge your signature, and then cash that check, that would be fraudulent. That’s not exactly what Abagnale did, but I think you get the point. Computerization has made check forging much more difficult.
