There is absolutely NO difference between the grocery store and online, organic store, farmer’s market, or other means as you are still BUYING it and is NOT produce in your farm. Who really quits completely or almost completely the grocery store in the United States? I hate marketing tools with dubious accuracy!
@@kathleensmith4853 It’s not locally sourced if it’s from Amazon. To me, there is no difference between going to the grocery store and ordering it online.
Justin says that they’re quitting the grocery for their health and that the better food is nutrient dense. Doesn’t make sense. They’re probably even buying the same brands but just having it delivered. At least support local businesses in your area!
If you're still ordering on line, that's no different than going to the grocery store, plus you're helping to shut down the local business for your convenience. Put the pigs waterer outside the fence, he can reach through the panels to drink.
I love the longer format. I often feel disappointed at the end of short ones and ask myself, did I watch all of that episode and go back to see the end again to make sure. Lily and the geese together was adorable. Love seeing more of Rebecca and the house and garden.
Acre homestead does a great job at showing what she does with the food she grows and her style of freezer meals might be easier for you guys especially the beautiful one
I think if you really want to do year round, you're going to have to add one more green house/hoop house that you can warm in winter When necessary, for winter veggies, because all stored/frozen can be less than happily livable. (also you would be able to put in a couple of dwarf trees in there, like lemon and fig maybe an orange, that would make the whole idea more satisfying. fig will go dormant in winter regardless, but will get bigger and be happier if you can protect it for first 3-5 winters, thicker the trunk, the better it can handle winter.
It's illegal to wash eggs in most of the world, if there's a bit of dirt, use a dry scrubby to remove, but washing actually increases the risk of ecoli etc passing through the shell. Once dry it doesn't multiply, none of the other bacteria that cause stomach issues thrive in dry conditions either..only time they can thrive is once you've helped them get through the shell..
Tell Grandma we send our love and prayers !! miss seeing her !! Your animals put a smile on my face, Lily, and all your family !! Henry is working !! I hope he gets an allowance too !! I wish this was smell a computer I would love to even snell the piggy poop LOL
Buying in cheeses and butter you have the resource to make is simply madness. If you don't have time to make your own, find a local person who has and barter for some fresh made with your own produce.
Have been carnivore for almost 2 years. Bacon, our eggs, real butter with salt and for dinner lots of meat options. No more heart palpitations or fog mind. Love the homestead work and have way more energy. We raise and grow our food and our foods’ food. We eat on occasion what is ripe and ready like the blackberries and asparagus.
Sunday seed day! I'm so glad Henry loves his little car/jeep. I'm happy to see you got the momma pig and piglet back in. I don't drink skim milk either. Why is Beefcake wreaking his water barrel? Weird. Too bored? I love how the goslings have imprinted on Lily! Lily is so good with them. I like the treehouse. It's great that you got a dairy source! You have to move Harriet and then the older boys go off to play soccer with Sam. Cool, Lily, Gideon, and Henry hanging out at the tree house. Turkey made in the Dutch oven looks wonderful! Happy Birthday Rebekah! 🥳🎂🎈Those Hydrangeas are beautiful guys. Nice pick as a blooming plant for your mom. Thanks for this video Rhodes family!
Love this VLOG! Always learn something from you telling the story of your day. Lilly is a doll. And those dirty eggs. “Note to self”. Haha. God bless you and your family!
You guys spend an awful lot of time futzing with water lines and getting water to places... sounds like its time this summer to get some trenching done for the areas that make the most sense, like a permanent water line and faucet at the high tunnel, and at the animal "barn" and the fields nearest the house.
I've been watching your channel for a few years and you've made me want to quit the grocery store too. I live in an apartment in the city with a balcony, but I started my very first tomato garden this year!!! Decided to start with something I know I eat a lot (and are way too expensive at the grocery store right now). My dream is to have a homestead and I'm several years away from that. But your channel inspired me to get started with what I can do, NOW. Thanks for sharing the knowledge Justin
I usually have a busy week so once I have a day to relax I have a bunch of your videos to watch, and I could keep watching all day! My favourite part about your videos vs other homesteaders is the inclusion of the struggles you document and the kids. Love seeing you work through problems with them, and Jonah and Josiah have really stepped up and turned into responsible young men. I’ve been watching since you first got cows and love this channel!
thank you! I guess somebody is enjoying the big volume jump, and choppy cuts, sure hope you are loving it. Yuch, not me. It hurts. feel very yanked around. I like basic theme and story, had to take a break from the video to find out in the comments. If you have to have the choppy cuts, and add music, PLEASE be mindful of the volume level! Wearing earbuds and straining to hear the narration/dialoge then WOMP!! rush to pull earbud out. Not everything to everyone, guess my time with the project is coming to a close. Grateful for all your sharing.
I agree with paulafairbanks, this video was more relaxed. I hadn't watched you for awhile because didn't care for the rushed and fast talking but decided to give you a try today and was pleased. Have been subscribed since before the A merican Farm Tour. I am back now. Good to hear Grandma mentioned and will be praying for her and Big Daddy.
I'm ready to get the ground going where the high tunnel will be gong and get some stuff in. Not expecting much this first year but something I can work on with my kids and have some fun while we're building the house. Framing starts tomorrow, hoping to be in on Christmas.
Wash the eggs right before you are using them. Otherwise, they’ll last out on the counter for a number of weeks. If you wash them they should be refrigerated until use.
Lily, You are such an animal-whisperer, baking-fairy, cute-outfit-Cowgirl-Princess! I enjoy watching you! You are the kind of daughter every Mom wishes for! 🤎
Would quitting the grocery store be easier to start mid season rather than now when there is less available to harvest? Asking sincerely to help inform others who may be following along. I like the idea of eating what's in season and supporting local growers/farmers.
I think since this is a learning channel essentially. It’s important to know that you have to plan ahead all the way in March to be able to get off grocery dependence. Starting in June means you may not have planted enough cucumbers or tomatoes back in April. Yk
@@ocimak but they’re not discussing going grocery free when the garden comes up and then preserving for the coming winter. They have a 30 day challenge and it started today. I just don’t know what people would learn from that except fad titles and challenges get more clicks?
Understood I don't want to squash their ideas. Perhaps 30 days is a good test project for future ambitions. I couldn't do it but I do like the idea of sourcing more of my families food from nearby farmers to support local and eat what is in season as that resonates with me.
Some days it seems like you guys are on full throttle, and I can’t imagine how you get any vlogging done! It will be interesting to see how much you can depend on not going to the store. I’m sure it can be done, but it may require doing even more at home, and possibly having more freezers to accommodate the seasonal vegetables. The kids are such a help from what we see, and yet they find time to have loads of fun too! I’m wondering how may times you have to change the battery out in Henry’s keep, in a days time? He had that running most of the day! All I can say Is that you have a wonderful family, and you are setting a good example of what it takes to raise a sustainable family, in this very throwaway world. ❤
You will quit the grocery store when you learn to preserve the food/garden you raise. Harvesting your livestock is a great savings and you know what you are eating, but canning, dehydrating, freeze drying will make it so much easier and healthy, especially easier on your finances. Love that you utilize your dairy milk also.
are you growing long green beans this year (the replacement for broccoli when it is out of season) - they freeze really well and my family have alway cooked them from frozen (we don't eat canned beans yuck) - bring a pot of water to boil with a good amount of salt once the water is at a rolling boil put the beans in and once the water has started to just boil again take the water out and add some butter and they are done (hot beans) - we also do cold green bean salad the same way but at the end instead of butter we put the into water with ice until they are cold - pour the water out using a colandar and add anything else you might like to it - one favourate is finely cut red onions and feta cheese with a nice home made dressing - green beans is an amazing vege that you can grab from the freezer all year round
Baby pig squeal is so cute 🥰🥹❤️ Gideon gets more responsible and reliable every day. For a kid who could never find his shoes, he is great with little Henry. Little Henry is getting involved in the action more all the time. Excellent crop of chidlers 👍 Rebekah & Justin you are giving your kids the best life a kid could hope for. 👍
I live in a town. I am in no way a homesteader and I could quit the grocery store if I do it like you. Because you just said that you will buy stuff off of Amazon or if it could be delivered that would be fine and even going to the farmers market. So I don’t really understand the whole not going to a grocery store. What’s the damn difference?
Lots to learn from y'all, and appreciate the children learning tasks and responsibilities, not to mention some essential life skills....but.....• Why is it called "Justin Rhodes" with your face when it's totally a family working together? • This was one of those videos that the jumping around (though a bit better than some in the past) but particularly the MUSIC drove me nuts. Let us hear the natural sounds of working and around the farm...but especially stop the jumping around and hyped up music. I finally just had to mute it and watch/stop/turn back on, etc....but not very efficient use of my time as can't listen while doing other chores myself and only stopping to watch key things I must see to learn about. • Must agree that it's best just to say you are trying to "wean" from MOST things coming from a store (bricks & mortar OR online).
The USA is the only place that mandates refrigeration of eggs I’ve had chickens for years and they keep well over a month. My dogs eat eggs everyday. Me as well Azure market is sometimes the only place you can get bulk organically raised everything. I’ve used them for 20 some years. I think basically staying out of corporate grocery stores is what the goal is. Knowing where your food comes from is paramount. Cows getting fed dead animals and feces is catching up with the industry ❤
@@freefahren Why do you say they don't know this? Rebecca has had eggs on her kitchen counter for years. She even has a special egg shelf tohold them.
ps :but also will still probably buy coffee, tea, some sugar (altho you might consider planting some sorghum to make sugar) anyway think you really need a second full time green house for winter to quit the grocery store.
I’m sorry Grandma’s disease has progressed -what a blessing for y’all to be there to help her and Big Daddy. Praying for them both as well as you and Rebecca as you help during this difficult season.
What you give the pigs as skim is still considered full cream here in Australia. The full cream milk we buy at the shop has no cream cap at the top, it has already been scooped off.
I feel so bad for Gidian. Too little to enjoy activists with the big boys and always has to let Henry have his way because Henry is the baby! Henry seems to always take precedence. No wonder he's acting out. He's getting lost in the mix!!! Not trying to judge, just saying what it looks like from the outside.
When you started this eating off the farm, quitting the grocery store, it wasnt stated you could order on line. , was it? There was no online when i was growing up.
Eggs are porous so washing pushes the bacteria INTO the egg. A dry rub off to keep loose matter off is better than using a wet solution. I think that’s where the misunderstanding about not washing comes into play. I want the bacteria on the outside of the food not force it inside.
Omg I laughed out loud when you went back to let the boys bring the cow out to milk for the 4 cups of milk mom needed for dinner! Your grocery store vs ours! 😂
Nobody can truly quit the store. Its not possible to make certain things outside of food. Like baking soda, soap, foil.... Maybe quitting buying produce, flours, dairy and other food items but certainly not the store completely.
😱 my neighbor just sprayed 2,4-D and picloram + triclopyr on his pasture, only 100 ft from my garden. Completely destroyed my entire garden, peas, tomatos, peppers, beans, potatos... gone. I'm devastated.
Rebecca you have a long road with your Mom. I am sorry I know how it will feel but I had 2 Sisters to share Blessings honey you have a Loving Husband and Children .. Even with that it will be difficult ❤❤❤❤❤❤
Justin, Austin,... long ago and far away, if you didn't have it, you didn't go and get it (broccoli) you improvised, or went with out...I learned to do this a long time ago when my children were still at home. We are conditioned to want something and so we justify going out to get it without using our common sense and doing something else.
Hey guys, you will find that mozzarella, butter and cream are so stinking easy to make. Please don’t spend money buying yet. You have the milk resources that you need to make them. Mozzarella is pretty easy Peezy a promise. please go to Leeners or the cheese queen. Also, it is so easy to make your own yogurt, cream cheese, kefir, water, kefir, sauerkraut, Kim Chi I would love for you guys to give these a try. Keep on working hard I enjoy your videos.
I’m confused. Why are you shopping for milk products when you have milk cows? I laugh when I see the lack of upkeep around your place, it’s not like you work away from home and it’s not like you don’t have a small army of help, how do so many things get overlooked everyday?
How much of your food do you grow? I also struggle with keeping up with aesthetics etc. While raising almost all of my own food. Do you have any suggestions? I do believe they spend lots of time on the videos and business side as well so they really do work. I only work 22 hrs a week and still struggle with energy for keeping up with everything.
@@reileywicken5391 they have new farm help so maybe she will be able to keep them focused. They also have someone doing the filming and editing. They also have people that take care of their pay to play business. What I see are people that just can’t get organized, they keep telling us they have been doing this for 15 years now. I just find it laughable that they have no set schedule. Maybe mom should spend a little more time getting organized/setting up a daily schedule and a little less time in bed or shopping online.
The only reason to not wash eggs is if you are going to be hatching them. Why not store them in the fridge? I leave mine out so they are easier to peel when boiled, but other than that, there is no need.
I wash my eggs before I use them, too. Even if they look clean, you don’t know what is carried on the dust and chicken feathers and the egg buckets, etc.
