Don’t always have time to cook? That’s fine, there are always left overs! Inside Edition wanted to find out just how long leftovers are safe to eat. So we asked Peter DeLucia, the Westchester County assistant health commissioner, for his best advice on fridge staples. DeLucia tested an egg salad from a local mother's fridge, and the results were astounding. After three days, the bacteria in the food had increased by 4,000%. Check out our video to see how other foods fared in the test. #InsideEdition

General rule is just to eat anything within 2 days. Especially if it's a dairy product. How adults dont know this is beyond me, I knew them back when I was a kid.

I've had the pleasure of sampling a lot of questionable things. I won't send it unless I've tasted it. The worse one I ever hit was sour beef gravy. Idiot sous chef didn't leave it to cool proper.

Patricia if it’s been found a while after and it feels warm then it’s thrown out to the garbage, depending on what it is. Usually the label has a time as it by the law in the grocery stores, 80% it’ll be thrown out

Also you can’t rely on the expiration date. That date is only good until it is opened. If you open it, you’ve only got a few days even if the expiration date is weeks away. There’s always exceptions though, like cheese.

If I'm concerned about left over food, that I may have kept too long, I offer a piece of it, to may cat. She has a much better nose than I, and will quickly let me know if it's ok. If it is, she takes a bite. If not, she scratches around it, with her front paw. She is never wrong, and neither of us get sick.

The whole danger zone of leaving food out for 2+ hours , I do that all the time... Leave it out for over 2 hours, put it in the fridge for days and still eat it... All the time. Never had food poisoning once, never gotten sick.

I was raised off leftovers as old as 4 to 5 days and even a full week. I'm in my 30s and still rather healthy. I eat this way to this day. as long as it doesn't look, smell or taste rotten it's ok to eat. too many homeless ppl in the world to waste food cause a rich scientists says to
