How long does the infill in a synthetic turf field hold up? Are synthetic turf fields durable? We checked what a 7-year-old Envirofill® athletic field looks like. We performed a couple of tests across high-trafficked areas on a field built in 2010 in Riverside Park in Cincinnati:
(1) We checked the infill depth at a lacrosse field crease: we placed the infill depth gauge on the ground, gave it a little jiggle, made sure sure it was right on top of the infill. We twisted the screw loose, which freed up the gauge, then tightened back the screw. The gauge showed around an inch of infill, which is perfect for this particular field. One of the benefits of Envirofill® is how heavy it is. Beacuse of its bulk density, it's going to stay put. Second thing it demonstrates is the importance of desgining your turf spec the right way. Ensure that you have the right turf fiber that really helps encapsulate and stabilize that infill.
(2) We checked the durability of the product on the sideline of the field. We got a sample of the infill from the field and compared it with a brand new Envirofill®. We saw that the field turf was still very green, coating was intact, it was maybe a little more dingy as the result of the UV exposure.
(3) We checked for flyout. We bounced the ball against a white piece of paper standing up right and observed how much flyout is coming out. As you can see in the video, very little flyout came from the Envirofill® system.
(4) We compared how a soccer ball bounces off of the Envirofill® field compared to a natural field. As you see in the video, the soccer ball has a very natural reaction to the Envirofill® field. You can notice that the reaction between this natural surface and that Envirofill® surface are very similar.
