In Warrior Cats, characters commonly live over half a dozen years, but how accurate would this be in real life?

Another thing to think about- the feral cat life expectancy includes a kittens who dies at birth or very soon after, which happens a lot and in my experience (I take care of a 'feral' cat colony in my yard) Kittens that live more than 6 months to a year often live quite a long time, much longer than 3 years.

Oh good point, I didn't think about that!

I think that in the original series lots of kits died because a lot of kits are mentioned only to never be seen again

A large group such as a clan caring for them and putting a strong focus on keeping them safe (feeding them first and making it every cat's duty to save them from harm are two seperate laws from the warrior code) nevermind the relatively advanced medical knowledge of medecine cats could probably seriouisly lessen that death toll of kittens aswell I imagine.
@teaartist6455
@teaartist6455 Год назад
@@No-longer1 To some degree, but a lot of preventing early infant deaths is modern medicine which the clans don't have. It took a really long time for infant mortality rates to fall from around 50% to what they are and a huge part of this (aside from vaccines) is issues newborns may get that simply weren't treatable before.

Really cool video! Though it's sad to think that warriors irl wouldn't live as long as in the books :(

Actually, I think they do live that long in the books. Think about it, aside from leaders how many cats have we seen that survive through at least four leafbares? Most cats don't live that long

1:58 It's slightly horrifying that the code encourages warriors to kill rogues
@perorbem
@perorbem Год назад
I agree, I think it would be more fair if it discouraged killing no matter where the cat in question is from. Maybe that'll be fixed with the changes to the warrior code in the newest arc though!

Sometimes feral cats who live in colonies CAN live up to 10 years if they have really good caretakers. And as you know, Warrior cats do have caretakers. So I’m pretty sure it’s possible. The books aren’t too far off.

i really liked this video. very well researched. in the later books/arcs, battles are becoming less and less frequent, which is defintely showing an increase in life spans. less battles and more localized deadly situations are leading to bigger clans, which means more protected clans and more characters to get attached to. this is both a good and a bad thing, which would lead me to a whole longer rant about it. regardless, this is some good information to keep in mind.
@teaartist6455

One big issue with comparing to real life is that Warrior cats live in a society (problem 1) that is unlike any that's likely to exist in real life (problem 2) due to not being how cats build their social structures (Long story short, feral cats form bonds with mainly other females which can be very close, but these are closer to an anarchist commune with a little bit of "spice" than the strict hierarchy seen in warrior cats). There's also the aspect of the cats being at least somewhat smarter than RL cats by all appearances (and I know part of this is for narrative convenience, but still). Which means that we're already several steps removed from RL feral cats and the more extrapolation you need to do, the less you can actually predict. (Which is to say, still a great job! )

Considering that half the plants they use as "medicine" would kill cats irl, not very long. But realistically, cats don't live in massive colonies either. Feral cats can still live well into their teens if they're smart/lucky enough. There was a big tomcat that showed up in my neighborhood when I was around 6 or 7, he was fairly big, already had the big, thicc tomcat head. He was around for almost 12 years. It's never actually stated but subtly implied that leaders with 9 lives could potentially live for decades, imploring that each of their "lives" is the typical cat lifespan of 15-20 years. Which is kinda silly.
@perorbem
@perorbem Год назад
I know cats don't usually live in large groups like that, but this video was just meant to analyze how long clan cats would live *if* they were in real life, not necessarily how realistic it is. And the feral cat age I found was just an average. I'm sure they can live much longer, but in the wild it would also be a lot harder to survive than in a neighborhood/city. I do agree it's pretty silly that leaders could technically live up to like a hundred years though, haha
@teaartist6455
@teaartist6455 Год назад
I think it's strongly implied that these 9 lives don't actually add to your normal lifespan, they just allow you to survive deadly incidents. See: Leopardstar dying of diabetes from old age; Bluestar's mental illness may partially be interpreted as dementia.

Those cats wouldn’t live longer than a day if the Erin’s included bears, wolves, and any other animal that is classified as a cat killer.
@perorbem
@perorbem Год назад
Good point! There is instances of foxes, badgers and mountain lions in the books though, so it could be that the area where the clans live just isn't home to many predators like the ones you mentioned
@blobbertmcblob4888
@blobbertmcblob4888 Год назад
They also imply that foxes are massive compared to the cats, which...just isn't true. In real life, a healthy, adult cat (male or female) could wipe the floor with a healthy adult red fox 5 times over. Of course, they also didn't know what a vaguely 5 or so month old kitten looks like, as when Fireheart is given Cinderpaw (who, along with Brackenpaw) are implied to be younger than 6 moons (months) old, she's described as being "Small and fluffy, with a short tail" when a vaguely 5 month old kitten would be going through that long and lanky stage most kittens do before they start filling out.
@No-longer1
@No-longer1 Год назад
@@blobbertmcblob4888 The erins could be excused for not knowing how exactly cats mature, but Lionblaze when born is literally described as broad shouldered (and musculut, I think) the moment he pops out of Leafpool. Not even human babies pop out built like the rock, I don’t think any mammalian newborn does either. In the same novella Leafpool is also shown to just pop back whitepaw’s *tail* like any other limb. You know, the thing that is the extension of the spine? Now spinal cords can get dislocated, but I doubt the erins would treat it so chill if they even had very rudementary knowledge in cat anatomy. The cats shrugging is one thing, this is something else
