It’s worth mentioning that Weinstein’s threat of hiring Quentin Tarantino was probably a sort of empty threat to try to get Peter to bow under his demands, as Weinstein also threatened to get John Madden to direct (Director of Shakespeare in Love), and it feels unlikely that Tarantino would be interested in a project like that. I think the real threat would’ve been Weinstein finding someone desperate enough to direct it that they would follow all his demands and make the single movie Lotr mess. Anyhow , maybe I’ll re-release it again some day and include that part haha

That's the sheer irony with the way Hollywon't "functions" (or rather, doesn't). It's a bloody miracle that PJ & NLC actually DID end up getting the backing, support, and free reign to make the LotR trilogy (WHICH WOULD HAVE BEEN ONLY ONE FILM) into the legendary project it was. I mean, just imagine if Wine-steen *DID* get his way... as he almost always did. Liv Tyler and Miranda Otto probably would've had to watch their backs at every turn. :/ That dude would've been PREYING upon them. Sick fugg.

@@user-microburst Although that time it was the fault of the producers. They forced Jackson into it. He had been signed on when it was supposed to be 2 movies, and late into the production, only months before the release of the first episode, they made the call to turn it into 3 films, without postponing production or giving him more shooting days. Jackson and writers had to re-write it WHILE FILMING. A lot of the scenes were being written by Jackson as they were being filmed, which is insane.

Similar coincidental magic also helped Star Wars to get made, one should point out. Lucas had essentially one ally amongst the execs of Fox, and that was what it took to carry a very difficult creation process to becoming what is today a timeless classic. These similarities feel sort of like lightning striking twice, so not purely random chance. You have the luck of the right person in the right place at the right time, who has the vision to see what the movie maker(s) want to accomplish, the competence to see the project through, and the desire to watch the final creation, like.

I had no idea we came so close to disaster. And to think, if not for these movies, there would be nowhere near the amount of interest in the fantasy genre as there is now. Other studios saw the success of LOTR and tried to catch that same lightning in the bottle, but in that pursuit to become the "next big fantasy trilogy", what came of it? - Narnia started well enough but petered out with the sequels - Percy Jackson stumbled and fell on it's face - Golden Compass was dead on arrival - Eragon was mangled beyond recognition Even today, we still have this derivative trend chasing, only now with the success of Game of Thrones. - Wheel of Time genuinely angered me with how badly it was vandalized by the scriptwriters at Amazon - And speaking of Amazon - Rings of Power I avoid like the plague

Here's how you answer your question at 10:19. It's bc Peter Jackson respected the source material, stuck to the source material, and only made slight changes that made sense on print but not visually. He didn't input today's politics, he respected the fans, he respected Tolkien, he wasn't trying to convey a message, and most importantly he delivered what he and the people wanted: a faithful film adaptation of a trilogy. These movies are the reason why I got into Tolkien's world and if they were poorly made, I doubt I would have in the first place. This is why people hate modern adaptations bc the director's input their own beliefs instead of just simply sticking to the established lore.

@TheWanderingFire
@TheWanderingFire Месяц назад
@@sasforex5917I must respectfully disagree. Jackson et al. made *huge* changes to the story. In some cases it was for pacing, others to insert tension where it did not exist in the book (mainly in films 2 & 3), and in others it was to create more noticeable character-arcs. What they did right was to keep the tone of the story Tolkienesque, usually by using as much of the dialog (or narrator passages delivered as dialog) as possible, even if the lines are delivered at a different point in the story or by a different character. They definitely respected the material, even if they didn't stick to the exact story line for line. There are so many differences between the book and films, it's a testament to the efforts of everyone involved that they feel like the same story.
@larryzach7880
@larryzach7880 25 дней назад
Anywhere he changed the dialogue was egomaniacal stupidity. How could anyone be so arrogant as to think that they could improve dialogue written by someone with a command of the English language like Tolkien? E G. Eowen ang the king of the Nazgul, Aragorns meeting with Eomer, replacing Glorfindel with Arwen at the ford and multiple other scenes where Jacksons attempts at modernization for relevance or whatever he was trying for just came off as clumsy bad writing. Good movies it's just the books are infinitely better.

You still age and die in the undying lands if you are mortal. So Frodo and Bilbo (and Sam) all died there. It's really only a haven for the Elves because things change very slowly there which goes well with the Elves immortality.

When an absolute chad director meets an absolute gigachad studio. I still can't believe this trilogy happened and how good it was. I dont think we'll see anything like this happen again. The story, the production, the scope, the scale, the trust people had in each other's work. Its pretty insane for such a cynical industry.

The one and only difficulty with The Lord of the Rings is there is no explanation of why was Denethor CRAZY. Denethor uses the Palantir of Minas Tirith with good intentions to peer into Sauron's mind (just the same as Saruman using the Palantir of Isengard). Sauron instead gets into everyone’s head, taunting all filling doom and terror, that all was lost.

It's already difficult to adapt a book in a 2 hours movie. I can't imagine doing it for a trilogy. The proposed changed are scary! I think it would had been difficult to find a serious director for such a project. Anyone with a little common sense and knowledge of the fandom would know it's suicidal professionally. Making a trilogy out of one book wasn't a much better idea though...

I think one again this shows that we should, just give artists unrestricted funds. Every great movie seems to have this story of almost being destroyed by Hollywood moneymen, and every bad movie a story of it being worn down to what we got from something that might have been great.

I mean, it stings when you phrase it like that and there are absolutely faults and failures that have come from cutting cost and time, but you have to remember that the other side of that coin is spending indefinite years and unstoppable amounts of money on a project that, once it hit theaters, _doesn't_ get the LOTR reception and just bombs. For every LOTR, there is a Dune or a Waterworld waiting in the wings to destroy an investor who threw their full weight behind the gamble and got snake-eyes.
