Tribal elders and water experts offer a window into the history of water in Owens Valley and how it ran dry.
Members of two northern Paiute tribes describe the lush valley where their tribes survived for thousands of years. This changed quickly with the growing presence of settlers and the growing thirst of the city that became Los Angeles. Through a complex system of reservoirs, canals and aqueducts, the metropolis siphons and pumps unprecedented amounts of surface and groundwater, further exacerbating unresolved water rights issues that tribal members deal with on a daily basis.

Thank you very much for this investigation. I pray that our God will bring the Paiute people justice and peace while helping Los Angelenos establish their city and prosper their people for His glory.

Proud to be born and from this area. What LA did back in the 1900s is sad.

i am very Proud to be a Descendant of the Local (NUMU) . that is our Traditional lands,. ! The Government Really Hated my Enormous Band of Paiute/Shoshones from Bridgeport to little lake( Payahuunaduu) we grew the land for our People. Using our Hands and made rivers upon mother earth , my Ancestors went to war only in self defense ! we protected our selves and won many battles . they said war was over come to feast and tricked my people to independence and forced them to tejon . and claimed they won the war . when offically my chief JOAQUIN JIM NEVER SURRENDERD OR LOST TO THE U>S .now we suffer for no reason! Why are we dyin to live , when were just living to die? look it up!

The common denominator in every scenario similar to this one is white people.

In my humble opinion, the Owens Valley had a land grab from the natives. Then a water grab from early settlers. It was always a game of big fish eating the littler one.

the local indians fought for it. they should of kept it. but they said the war was over come and eat. they promised food clothes .1000 women and children and warriors went to fort independence with no weapons , and after they ate they had my 4th great grandpa bill chico go and be a messengr told all this to his people at the fort. sam newland was there he said they forced them after they tricked them to come to independence with promise of food. . in a way we did not lose it in war, but in a cowardice way. we got tricked . by the time the Paiutes made it back to there payahuunaduu everything was tooken over by settlers. even with all that we still made them family and friends. we still owned farms and ranches . then we all got ripped off and did not receive full payment. my jones family from round valley is owed by Los Angeles representees . nelly jones wright! sold her ranch for what 100$ bucks? you would think we would be rich indians .

Natives lost the land and the war. They were conquered just as they conquered the people before them. And some day, those that live here now will be conquered.
