They are incredibly loud indeed. And nowadays you mostly can't use the power anyway, especially in so called "silent stage" situations where the FOH mostly uses a DI signal and we all use in-ears. The loud stages are long over nowadays anyway, at least for the most part. When I started out decades ago there were still real loud stage volumes and lots of feedback;) However, I still love the big heads as they give you more headroom in general. Great video again, my friend. Stay safe and keep on rockin'!
The loud stage days definitely are not over, I've seen plenty of smaller bands where the majority of the volume comes from the amps on stage with relatively little PA support.
I can only confirm what Euge here showed very well. I have an SC20 that I hook to a single Engl 1x12 V30 cab and it is an absolute monster. For home use, it is too loud without an attenuator of some kind because you need to run at it a sweet spot between 5-6 to get THE SOUND right, and preamp dimed to three-quarters or full. I run it with -20 dB captor attenuation and also put a dummy volume pedal in the FX loop to tame the preamp in order to get more volume from the master volume. Those are some tricks that I use to tame down volumes to a really acceptable level and not getting killed by the neighbors lol but still getting that Marshall sound that we are all addicted to :-) Studio JCM 800 kicks ass!
And yes...my wife would kill me if I did not play this with the attenuator. I think I would be sitting outside of the apartment right now LOL :-D It looks to me that Euge had similar experiences hahaha
20 watts from Hell!! U should consider Coffee with Ola- would love to see u too chat. Plus would be very beneficial to your sub growth. Your the best bro-
HI EUGE,cool vid,one of my amps is a Black Star 2×12 combo,it plenty loud in most band settings,I do like the mids in the baby 800,that one is hard to beat in my opinion ,stay health and safe, spring is just around the corner here in NH. Am itching to get my Streetglide back on the road. Take care bro!🎸🤘👍
HI, HUge like ever very good info, Just for the people that fear to be too loud, you have to know that the Bugera Power soak , even when at full volume, it cuts the volume in half. So consider this too. I do Have a Mini Plexi SC20h and also a similar Laney LA30BH . THe Laney is way louder than the plexi. I do have power soak a Bugera for low wattage amp and a Rivera Rock Crusher for my bigger amp. HOnestly, for my SC and MY La30BH, i don’t use power soak and i use my SC20h at volume 8. For me it sound good that way without beeing too loud (for the SC). When my wife is at home i do use my Power soak no choice ....... :-). Thanks for the vids Eugene, i really like your post, great playing, great advise, great playing.
You can actually download a decibel reader onto your phone for free. I have one , I know my marshall that’s 100 watts, when I turn it down with the master sits at around 75-80 decibels about 12 feet away ,if I’m trying to not be ridiculously loud. I wonder how loud the plexi would be in comparison. I wanna get one but then people say it’s so loud , I really don’t know what to think of it .
2 1/2 minutes in and defo can agree with plexis being deafening loud, I once had the chance about 9 years ago to do an outdoor gig with 1980 super lead and superreverb ri together with both up at about 7 (no master volume) and literally could not hear the hard hitting drummer that was set up 1.5 meters away from me ....!
Euge Valovirta I have a rough video clip of my poor attempt at a bit of EVH riffing if you get a chance have a listen to it , I would love to hear your opinion on the tone ! Please excuse the sloppy playing/video quality!
@@EugeValovirta230V the thing is I bought a MIG 50 a year ago, but it's broken (still in warranty, now being serviced). I love it to death, but the tubes stopped working for no reason lol So I'm not sure about its reliability and I'm looking for a nice Marshall. This seems to do the job for me... But maybe I'll try it out in some local store!
I got mine yesterday and I can't turn up the volume past the beginning of the pot taper on the volume knob. Its going to be a few weeks before my bugera ps1 gets here from Germany. It sure is pretty though! 😆🙉
@@EugeValovirta230V from what I heard last night, and from the videos of yours on the head, the time between now and when the bugera arrives is going to be torture! 😁 I have no doubt whatsoever though, that as you've said, it'll be worth the wait.
When you bring the plexi you will always be the loudest person on the stage. I always liked that about having a plexi. The singer had a different opinion.
Killer review videos!.. Your playing is very inspirational. Got the studio JCM 800 by mistake (long story) was going to return it. I didn't think twenty watts would cut it. I was WRONG! This thing rips!.. The age of the mini heads is upon us!
Yes. I have the SV20 stack, and sometimes I think I should've opted for the SC20 instead simply because of it having a master volume control. I use only a bit of attenuation to help tame it, but the SV20 likes to be turned up to hit the amp's sweet spot.
Yep i tried a reissue plexi 100watt...and its freaking loud...i have to use a volume pedal in the fx loop as an attenuator to cranking the volume knob And i have mini jubilee thats freaking loud too and use torpedo captor attenuator to get a nice tone
Ok this is pretty clear and I'm about to get the jcm800. I play in a VERY Loud stage level band, largish venues! I'm planning on using it with a marshall 1960bv 4x12 cabinet. Still think it will cut it? I use a jvm410h and it's monstrous loud! but the gain channels are too compressed so I'm gunna A/B/Y the 2 amps through one cab jvm for cleans and jcm for over drive. What do you guys think?
very interesting but playing in a rock band would you play live with an SV20h on a 2x12 stack.? or 4x12 would be loud enough for a gig miced, or would you rehearse with it?
You sound like you playing even while waiting for the amps to warm up! There is definitely a reason why Marshall is called "the king of amps". I understand that Marshall is coming out with their own brand of hearing aids soon. After many years of using Marshall amps I know I need them...ha, ha :) ! Question: Do you get a popping sound when you engage and disengage your SD-1?
How loud the Marshall studio amps actually are…, talks most of the time, plays some unamplified licks and 1 chord for 2 seconds for every amp, man that’s deafening 🙉
Was about to buy the plexi for home use w/o power soak, so thank you for the this vid! My concern with attenuators is that they suck tone away (I used a $1,400 UA OX and returned it). Seems like the Bugera is worth a shot based on your recommendation though!
Noticed you have been using a lot the Phoenix! Still with the SD pickups? No 81/85? That one has the P90 in the neck. Just wondering how it sound in pure metal jeje
Yeah it’s a great guitar 👌. Stock SD pickups: Duncan Custom & Phat Cat P-90 which works really good on this one. For pure metal I’d probably go with the EMGs but man the Duncan Custom works for everything too 💪.
Oh man I had Bugera attenuator and returned it. I thought it sucked all the tone out of the amp. But yea. these amps are loud. Excellent video my friend. Keep em coming!
Oh I haven’t noticed. Well of course the tone is a bit different ’cos the speakers aren’t moving like they would with full volume and the interaction between the amp and the cabinet is different ’cos there is something in between but that just how it is 😎. Thanks! I will 💪😎.
I'm currently getting a PEAVEY 6505 Mini Head to go through a 2x12 cab. I hope I can do local pub gigs and rehearsals with this. If I can use a 20 WATT head for small dingy pub and underground 'dives' then that would be awesome!!
Probably not loud enough for a 4 piece rock band unmiked. No clean headroom. If you're bringing a 20w head to a gig chances are you are not bringing a 4x12 or even a 2x12.
For me 20 watts is gonna be plenty loud,20 watts vs 50 watts(im talking about tube not ss), not a big difference in volume. The question is, how much saturation do you want coming from the tubes 🤔.
Yes. I mean it depends how hard hitter the drummer is but gigging definitely ’cos it doesn’t really matter how loud an amp is; one can always have whatever one needs to hear from wedges or in-ears.
Do you find that the power soak takes anything away from the amp? I’d imagine it gets flubbier the more you’re attenuating? The reason I ask is I’ve been wanting one for my DSL40c. Thank you.
Not really. I mean of course it sounds a bit different since the speakers doesn’t ”pump” as much since they get a quieter signal but the amp itself sounds pretty much the same. I did a video about the PS1 if you’re interested: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ndENZ8Zw8N8.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-zEasSPvcRSA.html
Like these attenuators always do ’cos the ”reactance” & the negative feedback between the amp and the cab / speaker isn’t the same than without one. But it’s quite minor and doesn’t bother me ’cos I don’t record with this attached but just if I want to jam at lower volume levels and crank the amps to get a fuller sound. So for this purpose, to it was designed to, it works like a charm 👌😎. Thanks!
Yes, it’s not like playing without it, but it’s affordable and sounds great. My wife would kick me to the curve without it. I really love this amp. 90% of the time I use the amp as a pedal platform at a reasonable volume.
Another trick with these heads is to mabey use a single or twin speaker cab with low efficiency speakers to enable cranking of the amp without ridiculous volume!
Euge Valovirta Eminence used to make speakers with a faux volume control on the back which used to adjust speaker efficiency which was handy, the only issue was it wasn’t much use in a closed back cab unless you had some quick way of taking the back panel off to gain access to adjuster knob.
ok to answer my own question for everyone, just got my jcm800 based on what Euge has showed me in this video.........holy shit yes its loud enough! just put it side by side with my jvm410h 100w through a marshall 1960b and it more than kept up. this thing is just below the jvm100w for output (not by much) but heres the thing- it has serious push and cutting power! i dont see a live application where this 20w jcm800 wouldnt be more than enough in the volume department and my band is LOUD as hell
I am just very happy in having the SV20H for a home studio.Instead of trying to coax Plexi tones from other amps. It's a beautiful , flexible amp for pedals too at a choice of volumes.Thank you and a Happy New Year !
Tube is still missing a video of these where the levels would have compared to something sensible like talking volume. How low the talking in room would sound if the playing would just barely cut etc.
