Coach Nick breaks down exactly how Luka Doncic destroyed the Suns and led his Mavericks to the Western Conference Finals. Without any major adjustments, Monty WIlliams seemed content to hope Luka missed, and that simply didn't happen.

In 1969 the Lakers were playing in their home floor for game 7 of the NBA finals against a much older and weaker Celtics team. Apparently the staff had put up balloons and even signs that were saying the lakers were gonna win the championship before the game even started. I bring up this story because this clear amount of disrespect fired up Bill Russell and the Celtics to beat the lakers in stunning fashion and it was all because of the clear amount of disrespect they got. The Suns were sadly a very philosophically rigid/stubborn team. Lack of adjustments and a system that was better for the regular season than the post season. Soft switches, too little zone, not getting the ball out of Luka’s hands early, and very unwilling to go small when the Mavs spaced the floor. Their offense was too reliant on CP3 and Booker. They absolutely needed a third perimeter threat to create offense. They didn’t utilize Ayton enough for me on offense to punish mismatches.

Might have something to do with how European basketball is played? Here in North America, for me at least, what we get on highlights are the big highlight individual plays. In Europe I’ve heard it’s a lot more team oriented. Probably get a lot more shit for going for a big play and missing instead of the smart play.

@@connorlaird1644 In Euroleague, they play less games, which means that every game counts more; and also play less minutes, which means that every possession also counts more. Those two aspects translates into having a very narrow space for BS. European teams are way more focused on pragmatism and effective teamplay than highlights and superstar dependance. Every single player is expected to be able to do everything (passing, shooting, dribbling, running) and to be active on both offense and defense. Put players like nowadays' Lebron under one of those angry white-haired Serbian coaches with red faces from a lifetime worth of yelling and I tell you he'd turn LJ into the World's most expensive bench-warmer until he decided to move his ass on defense as he so does in offense.

Yep, I've been saying this for some time. He's a complete mismatch to every single player on that Sun's team. If he's iso'ing anyone, and they don't have help, you better hope he just misses. I might add, for Ayton he's just a bit too fast but he's way too crafty for Ayton to keep up. He plays mind games when he's dribbling against Ayton and he just ends up putting that poor guy in a dance routine trying to keep up because Ayton can't tell if he's about to cross him over to a step back or dribble drive kick out or score off of dribble penetration altogether.

2:50 thats what everybody says, but this dallas team is specifically built to punish that tactic. Look at the guys on the perimeter. Reggie has had 19 and DFS has had 24 in this series off of them getting good looks due to the suns overhelping on luka. Thats why this team is so dangerous - either luka destroys ur guys 1v1 over and over, or the whole team lights you up from 3 edit: also, its very obvious which fate a team chose. because every box score either says Luka dropped 40+ or the Mavs (minus Luka) shot like 55%+ from 3. And when a team chooses the second poison, every time without failure, I have to listen to a flock of casuals who go "well dallas played the best game of their life here, they will never shoot this well from 3 again"

The Clippers literally won their series against the Mavs because they let Luka get whatever he wanted, limited the role players and then punished an exhausted Luka in the late 3rd/4th and that still took a herculean effort from Kawhi to do. The text book is make Luka work and limit his team mates, if you zone up on him and put pressure on him he'll just get everyone else going and when that's happening people are hesitant to leave their guy and you end up with a weak zone Luka can score at will on anyway. Best way to stop Luka is to hope is step back isn't falling really.
@ThatsPety
@ThatsPety Год назад
@@hapgil141 exactly, this has been Dallas' strategy with Luka for a few years now offensively, but theyre better at it this year + they are WAY better defensively + they are better coached + they now have great team chemistry top to bottom + their confidence is at an all time high after taking this series. I don't have them winning the title this year (though that would be awesome), but they can push ANY team to their limits as-is. @ThatsPety

@@arexyouxepicxenough I disagree, that is not why they won that series. I'm honestly sick of hearing that lazy analysis. The suns said the same thing when they were up 2-0. 1. They didn't let Luka do anything. They straight up could not stop him 2. Honestly, I think it has to do with CP3s size. He’s plays his heart out but he has to work twice as hard against guys that are almost a foot taller than him. It also makes him a complete liability on defense. But what I think really caused him to collapse in Game 3 and beyond was the defensive adjustments made by Jason Kidd. Chris Paul and Devin Booker were double teamed almost all the time and the full press by Pauls defender wore him out.

it seems like he's just trying to find a way to not give the mavs the credit they deserve. his other video about this series is the same nonsense. "yeah the mavs did kinda good, BUT it was really just because the suns kept doing the wrong thing"
@quikdeath100
@quikdeath100 Год назад
The problem the Suns had I think was roster construction. They can only play one way and the way they play is a very, very bad matchup against the Mavs. The Suns rely on 3 and D wings (Bridges, Crowder, and Johnson) with a shot-blocking 5 to play defense. They don’t play a small ball without a traditional 5. This is a huge problem against Luka. Why? For several reasons, 1) allows Luka to target your traditional 5 for mismatches. 2) Luka is able to overpower or out quick most elite wing defenders. 3) Luka gets to hide on defense. The Suns were able to target him with CP3 in Game 2. But not afterwards. And more importantly their best offensive player Booker was not able to target him. Kidd got Luka to engage more defensively while also protecting him more within their scheme. Hiding Luka means he gets to only play and focus on offense. 4) Wing defenders that are limited offensively also limit your offensive ceiling. They can’t create if your top creators are struggling and make the game easier for your top guys. You4 top guys essentially have to do it themselves. The Clippers were the best team in the West before Kawhi went down last season and they eliminated the Mavs the prior two seasons. They did while absorbing huge offensive games from Luka including a dominant Game 7 performance from Luka. They did it by going small and limiting who Luka could target. It’s a different story going after Batum, Kawhi, PG or Marcus Morris versus Ayton. Going small allow them to play a 2-3 zone and even a triangle and 2 at times. Luka also had to work defensively. The Clippers put out lineups that had five good offensive players on the court. This is why the Warriors are still the favorites they can play small and limit who he targets, they have the firepower to remain in the game during Luka goes off, and Luka will need to play both sides of the ball. The Suns weren’t built with enough flexibility to beat a 5 out team with one of the best playoff scorers the league has ever seen.

@Treadston3

I guess you highlighted this in the 4th point, but It's worth emphasizing again that their offense is so "one-way" to the point that it's an even narrower road on offense because it is highly predicated on the ability of an elite PG to facilitate said offense. When your offense is reliant on a 37 year old to get the ball rolling and set the tone, it's just waiting to be exploited. Their second star can't play-make at any decent level for the entirety of a single game, and without CP3 they often look completely lost on what to do when the opposing team's defensive scheme can't be shook.
@DS-wz2bj
@DS-wz2bj Год назад
Coudnt Luka regularly target guys like Curry or Poole though? And if he tires them out, it takes a way a big chunk of GSW points just by way of tired legs on their shooters.
