Laura & Aaron, I am often struck by a less than kind tone in some questions and comments. Your responses are consistently a lesson in diplomacy and good manners. It encourages me to do better. Thank you both for all you do. You are the inspiration and instruction that prompted me to develop my garden. You were also the place I turned to for calm during Covid. Thank you, and Happy Mother's Day!
I too turned to my first garden videos when we went into lockdown with Covid. Started with Garden Answer and fell in love! Still wat h every video and have learned so very much! My thanks for saving my sanity!❤️Canada zone 5b
Sometimes I really want to " tell off" one of the nitpickers because they are so petty. You have never announced that everything you do is the only correct way to live..and work. Some opinions should stay with their owners!
Man, gotta love someone that's gardened for a whole year trying to tell someone like you what to do after living and breathing gardening your entire life. You handled that so eloquently and one of the reasons I absolutely love you. Happy Mother's Day Laura!
I have gardened in Southern California, Northern California, and now the PNW. USDA 11(?) to now 8a. The differences are amazing - and it's not just temperatures.
Ppl practicing their 2nd amendment rights- well good for u..lol. Laura always responds so eloquently and “DID BETTER” 😂😂😂 Tory I hope u live ur 💯 compliant happy life
I was outside yesterday wearing my black shirt and leggings too...........some of us are Winters, and LOVE Black..........leave Laura ALONE...............lol
It is sad that people think they can talk to you like that. Very good response to the inappropriate viewer comment. You guys are awesome!!! Thank you for the great videos and information.
Tori doesn’t know what the heck she’s talking about. I live in Northern California, have butterfly bushes and they are NOT invasive in my area nor are they in many other areas of the country. Good response, Laura!
@@catgal1102 I also have butterfly bushes in my garden and I live in Santa Barbara and they are not invasive. Not sure what that person was talking about!!
Aaron and Laura, honestly, you are totally not responsible for the information you provide to us viewers. You are presenting your own specialized experience and knowledge. You cannot possibly provide 100% accurate information for the entire United States let alone the entire planet! People need to develop more responsibility for themselves. People should ask their local garden centers for specific info.
Exactly. Research your area. I love the way the boxwoods look on their property unfortunately they are banned in PA due to blight. I wouldn't expect them to know that
I find the ag extension service to be better for info. My local garden center hires people who just water and sell plants. They really do not know one plant from the other.
It has to be really hard sometimes to have so many viewers looking in at your lives...questioning choices, practices, etc. I would imagine that it takes a certain mindset to tolerate the scrutiny. But so glad that you can and that you continue to provide such quality content.
Oh, and I have a pocket tip for Laura, too! Find a black mesh utility vest for fishing! (Amazon or a sporting goods store.) They’re loaded with pockets, long enough for extra coverage, and light enough not to make you sweaty. This is what my husband and I both wear in the garden to carry a phone, gloves, clippers, and a packet of plant ties, plus doggo cleanup bags and a few treats for bribes in case we do run across one of those snakes I mentioned in my other comment. 😄
Great suggestion on the fishing vest. I was thinking of suggesting Travel Smith brand. They also have lots of options. I bought a thin jacket for a vacation I took. I didn't want to carry a purse and that jacket was great. Happy Mother's Day!
@@pollytiks3885 I bought the first one for my husband to use in lieu of a backpack when his chronic back pain got too serious to ignore anymore. The vest redistributes the weight of all the things he likes to carry so it’s not all pulling on his lower back. It’s worked like a dream so far and he wears it everywhere now. And he gets compliments on it all the time because I personalized his with patches.
What makes your channel so successful is the fact that you guys speak the truth about all plants reactions in YOU area!! Good, bad, and differences!! Keep doing what your doing! It teaches the rest of us!👍👍❤️❤️
It does surprise me how many people have opinions about your place and your garden and how persistent they are about them. And I’m over here like let’s see what Laura is doing today. Also happy Mother’s Day for my Mother’s Day. I decided that since I live in Wilder, Idaho that for my Mother’s Day, I wanted to go to your mom and dad‘s garden center and see all the beautiful things. Monica was the one who rang me up with my beautiful coral bark Japanese Maple and I had to tell her about how my dog ate my watering can.😂 I love watching your family on your videos and Monica was just sweet and welcoming!
Happy Mother’s Day, Laura! Darker colors absorb UV rays, which helps block them from your skin. That's why dark blue, black, and dark red are the best colors for sun protection compared to white or pastel colors of the same fabric. Laura, you wear as many black blouses you like! We all look forward to Aaron’s plant descriptions, Monica’s backyard update, your mom’s landscaping around her new addition, and you two tempting us with what you have planned for your piece of heaven!
I love that when Benjamin came in to the studio, you greeted him and spoke to him. Then explained to us what was going on. When you were talking with him, you faced him not the camera. Especially after just saying you PW let you be honest and real. Great mothering moment on Mother’s Day.
One of my kids took me to Butchart Gardens on Vancouver Island yesterday. I saw brunnera blooming, and knew what they were thanks to YOU! It was wonderful. Packed and sunny and wonderful!
Here in Canada, part of North America, specifically here in Ontario, the butterfly bushes are beautiful not invasive where I live. They bring the Monarchs, hummingbirds and bumble bees all summer long.
About the comment of buttlefly bushies, my goodness🤦♀️ Please notice that we are watching from all over the world!!!! In fact i am watching from Argentina, a totally diferent time zone and season, actually i'm in autumn right now. So, you have to adapt everything according your zone, your season, your country, what you have available and the budyet. Regards from Córdoba, Argentina!!! 🇦🇷🇦🇷
Butterfly bushes are beautiful in Virginia and NOT invasive……on the other hand Virginia CREEPER IS but it’s not in Oregon!!!! Just do the research in your area !!! Hope you have a blessed Mothers Day Laura 🩷💙
@@kerrygilchrist62 Native plants can’t be invasive in the area they’re from. Creeper may be aggressive, but by definition it’s not invasive in the eastern US.
I love your gardens and feel you know what you are doing! Don’t let anyone rain on your parade. I feel so blessed to get to come along with you each day and learn something new. You have the best eye and instincts!
I agree. I've learned so much from this channel. The bonus for me is that Laura's voice is so pleasant and Aaron makes me giggle. Plus their kids are so sweet and her mom is absolutely amazing.
Nice work, Laura, answering critical questions by kindly educating. Soap box warriors are ever eager to put others in their place when, sadly, they don’t have all the facts most of the time. Way to take the high road!
"Trust your gut. Ultimately it's your garden, so if you want to mess it up as much as you want or whatever you should be doing your ideas" -- so true. Thanks for including my Q in your video! Happy Mother's Day!!
I love the way Laura thought process works compared to us mere mortals Laura - I have 10 minutes before it gets dark and starts to rain, I’ll just quickly plant these 5 flats of bedding plans. Us mortals - Right when have I got 5 hrs clear in my schedule to plant this HUGE order of 5 flats of bedding plants that just got delivered!! 🤣
I appreciate your comments, Laura, about considering your area in regards to invasive species. For instance, in my area privet , butterfly bush, and a bunch of other plants are considered invasive, because conditions are so mild. In the US, your county or state’s extension office and websites can give more information on what is invasive to your area. Thank you so much for your videos! I watch them everyday and learn so much! And so many things you’ve talked about, spurred my interest to investigate more, which has turned me into a more knowledgeable gardener! Thank you!
Smart lady basically making a “uniform “ for yourself so you don’t have to think about it. I did something similar when I was your age and just really busy. Didn’t want to think about what to wear as a young mom so I made polo shirts and jeans my “uniform “”.
I have been gardening for 45 years in New York, Maine, and Pennsylvania, and have grown many butterfly bushes and have NEVER had a problem with them reseeding themselves or spreading!
So many thing I've learned since I found your channel! *I don't have to have a perfect plan before I try something. If it doesn't work, I can change it. *I enjoy discovering what makes me happy and what works in my garden rather than copying someone else's style. *I've learned what to look for when deciding what to spend money on rather than buying something just because it's pretty. I've had much more survive as a result. *succulents are no longer scary. *I started growing a lot more perennials (mostly from seed) and gained more patience, with less work. *I'm able to recognize SO many more plants when I go to a nursery, and have a much better idea of how they grow and how to take care of them (even though I'm in the hot and humid south with lots and lots of rain). *Thanks for staying true to yourselves!
ATTENTION AARON!!! Don’t trim your Linden! No, don’t cut - that’s the future trunk of the tree. The side shoots off it will (with time) develop into the crown. It will straighten itself out in a year or two as it puts on more wood thickness on the stem. Cutting it would leave a weak point in the tree’s future growth, which could mean large branches falling off in the future.
❤YES TO AARON doing his plant tour feeling & matching the voices or faces!! Pretty please!!!!! Make our day!! Happy Mother’s Day to the amazing mom’s who make life look easy!
I can see where Laura is coming from when it comes to gardening in her area, having garden centres that stock plants for their customers based on environment. Having grown orchids in all kinds of environments, I try to communicate that what you see on screen is not limited to what knowledge base I could provide. But it os hard to be as all inclusive to everyone watching GA videos, when gardening in one zone. Kudos to Laura because, as I watch and listen, she really covers so many eventualities and possibilities given the circumstances she is gardening in. ❤
I am still laughing and cringing at the Self-Appointed Buddleia Police. They must be so much fun at parties and on garden walks! Cue Aaron's Eeyore impression!
Little late to responding but GREAT response Laura to the Budlehia comment. So glad these are still being sold here in my 7 a/b zone. Not invasive here! Our garden nurseries sells loads of them all sizes and varieties...😂 and you'll see at least two in every garden landscape.
Happy Mother's Day. A true Mother's Day moment in your re-cap video, when Benjamin entered the studio both of you lit up and showed all your attention to him. ( melt my heart.) You all know what you are doing with nature and gardening, but, this type of interaction with your family and friends that makes me adore you all. Happy Mother's Day!
The invasive species question reminds me how you shared once that you had planted Virginia creeper on purpose and enjoyed it. Here in Southern Ohio that is my worst nightmare and I look at it in the same way I do poison ivy haha it is very invasive a pain to get rid of!
I have never thought much about your clothes. It looks to me like you are wearing the right kind of outfits for the jobs you have to do. Shoot I wear the same sets of clothes until it is stained with dirt and paint and holes out because I don't wear my nice clothes to work on projects and to garden. Happy Mother's Day!
Happy Mother's Day. Hope you can enjoy your family and Gardens today ❤ Butterfly Bush is not invasive in my Zone 5 area Laura, you need to take your own advice, plant what you Love, remove what you don't. In the end it is YOUR Garden. I love how it is coming together. Love watching the progress. Absolutely LOVE how you are available to your children all day long. You are so Blessed. ❤
Laura you crack me up! Thinking in a bubble. I think you always mention when talking about butterfly bush that in your area okay but to check in our area.
Happy Mother’s Day Laura. You had a lot of interesting videos last week and this recap was great. To Aaron you must collect recordings of yourself when you comment on the plants with feeling that would be an awesome snippet added to the videos. The same when we have Paul and Bethany show up it’s a treat. The children’s fun appearance warm our hearts. Mom Dad and Monica are always fun too. The variety and fun features that you offer is what makes Garden Answer so welcoming and homey.
Everyone has a sumac story. Here's mine. There were three in my limited parking area when I bought my home in Denver. Didn't know anything about them, except they were called Tree of Heaven (ya, right). Had them cut down and the trunks ground down. The next year I found them growing up in my (yet to be landscaped) backyard. Dug them out by hand -- filled a large garbage can full of alien heads! Paid another person to bring in this contraption that dug down into the earth and rooted them out. Then I felt safe to landscape. Two years later/ just last week, the weirdest looking huge, clumping mushrooms are shooting up in the parking -- breaking through the road base -- are and even into my landscaped backyard and under the garden shed. Obviously, the trees are dead, but their spirits remain -- Tree of Heaven, indeed!!
More like Tree From Hell! My neighbor across the street has one and I haven’t had too many problems from it, but they come up all over her property. I’m glad the prevailing winds go the opposite direction!
Some people just dont understand how black is just a go to for an easier life 😂😂. I wear white very rearly but when I do it will certainly have a coffe stain on it 😑
People need to keep their negative comments back, gardening is so personal. I don’t share ideas anymore I do and show after because my fam would be so super opinionated but would love it afterwards. So yes, people who comment so freely should ask themselves, would you say that if you were sitting down with Laura or is it because you’re at home and the keyboards is so simple to type an opinion. God bless, ❤
I love Aaron's feelings toward artemesia. There is a Powys Castle variety which speaks to me as my sister and I stayed at a B&B at Powys Castle, Wales in 1994. Plants do invoke personal memories. 🥰
I planted a dwarf lilac four - five years ago. This spring is the first year for blooms. Fully intended to remove it last fall. Glad I procrastinated, it's beautiful this spring.
Thank you, thank you for being you! Each of you! Thank you for making me smile. I really appreciate it. Very difficult emotional week. I thank God for garden answer and it community! Be blessed!
I agree with you about being out in the wind working, it does beat you up. Loved that little visit with Benjamin he is so sweet !! You guys are the best !!
I bought 10 of those glowing petunias, just for fun. Why not, they are a great conversation starter. Don' t expect large flowers like PW Vistas but innovation is a good thing within the plant kingdom. And they do softly glow.
Good morning to my favorite garden videos. Y'all make my day! Aaron, Paul and Bethany thanks for the beautiful trees. And Laura and Bethany thanks for the flowers. You guys are the A team 💪.
Great video, Happy Mothers Day. Laura you look awesome in black, thats just the way you row. I love you in black, and another thing , when you garden you get dirty and you cant see dirt on black. Laura dont have time to worry about her shirt. Love all yalls videos. ❤
I'm laughing over .. Aaron's characters for plants and Nooooo kitty. We in Colorado love the butterfly bush .. Not invasive! We have a lot of open burning here, too.
Just a quick thing about Proven Winners - they are on sale in my area in Wisconsin. I'd never thought anything about them or had any reason to prefer them above any other brand. Watching what you do with these wonderful plants makes me want to buy Proven Winners over another brand, you make them look so beautiful and it's a "look" I'd love to have -
The lady that has the National Collection of big bamboos in UK she has a ditch around every variety of bamboo. So when they put she shutes out the will stack out on the side of the trench and are easy to cut. When asked why not have metal or something around instead she said that then they will try to go underneath and if they succseed you have those shutes/rootes way down in the ground! Not a good idea! Be careful what you do! I whish you all the luck with the sumacks! Btw. I have mine in biiig pots/barrels to make sure they don’t spread. And they are soo Hardy even here in Sweden to survive winters in those pots/barrels!
Tamaracks/Larches are glorious deciduous conifers here in northern MN. I believe it’s the only deciduous conifer. (Hope I’m not starting another rumor for you guys…) This past fall gave us the most incredible tamarack show-they were absolutely golden and it lasted for weeks. Super lucky year for us. Thanks for your videos!!
Climbing Hydrangea would be beautiful on the archway in the south garden. Beautiful in the spring and summer and the bark has gorgeous winter interest.
As to the new USDA climate zones, plants are more often killed by the lows than highs. If we get one or two nights at minus -30F (which we randomly do,) the given climate zones are wildly inaccurate. So while we're now told we're a zone 5, to be safe we're a zone 3 or 4.
Happy Mothers Day Laure &&& to your mommy. We love you so much. God Bless you all and many prayers 🙏🏻 Nurse Judi in Scottsdale AZ and Eucharistic Minister 🙏🏻 ☦️ ❤️
I have a cat that isn't mine but he comes here everyday and lays around on my patio. I named him moocher because he always mooches food off me. I started feeding him because he looked somewhat skinny when he showed up. I can't have a cat inside because I'm very allergic to them. My eyes would be swollen shut and wheezing all the time. But he's OK. And btw... You are very gracious with your responses to weird questions. It's nice that you are! And I live in tornado alley. Freaky sometimes.
Thank you for the email telling me that the resin remover for Felcos were back in stock! And to have a 15% discount to boot! My order has been placed and I am one happy garden chick. Thank you for having the store, I love it.
Happy mother's day, Laura! Your smile shines, thanks for keeping it appropriate with the clothes, you can wear whatever you want, thankful for who you are.
One great tip for people who fall in love with plants not appropriate for their area is to check the gardening magazines. They frequently feature articles like if you can't grow this, try this.
Many people have a work "uniform" whether it is the bottom or top. Fewer decisions when dressing and not having a day where all the choices are plaids, florals, dots, etc for both bottoms and tops.
Laura, I've been waiting for you to say what you're doing with all the geraniums you started. My guess is, in the 4 spots in front of the Hartley. The suspense is killing me. 😂
You are so very blessed that you don't have to deal with snakes. Here in the Deep South, our snakes can take your life. Before picking veggies, especially dense plantings, I make my husband do a snake check with a rake before I will even get close to the garden. That fear takes a lot of the joy out of gardening when you come face to face with an aggressive cottonmouth water moccasin. These snakes (even the babies) will chase a human or animal. That saying, they are more scared of you, is a bunch of bull when it comes to these snakes.
Oh goodness my life would be short lived if I ever lived there lol here in Ontario Canada I’m excited to see our cute little snakes and I bring them to my husband to show 😂
When I met you at the Seattle garden show year before last, it was strangely reassuring that you were dressed in the same kind of clothes you wear in videos, lol.
