How many orders do you NEED in a Guard Army?! | 10th Edition | Astra Militarum Tactics

One of my more reasonable requests for when our codex comes out is a detachment rule/enhancement that allows a character with regiment orders to transform them to squadron orders so that tank companies aren't solely relying on Leontus or TCs.

Buckle up everyone, incoming storytime: So couple of weeks ago me and my friends started our first proper 10th edition crusade with our armies. There was me with my Guard, a 1st company of Termies, some corrupted Space Wolves and some Black Templars. We all had 750 points to play with and I came with a Castellan, Psyker, Cadian Command Squad, Commissar, two units of ten Cadians, 1 Exteriminator Russ and finally 3 armoured sentinels rocking some plasma. It was a 4 player game, 1v1v1v1 style loads of fun, got set up with corner deployments which we rolled to pick our corners and who deployed first. I rolled highest so chose my corner first and thankfully my friend with his 1st company was in the table-end corner opposite me, so the risk of a turn 1 charge messing my day up was averted. Then we get to turns, long story short the Wolved and Templars crashed into each other turn 1 as expected whilst my Guard and the Termies had a tentitive truce for 2 turns so we could move up the board without problems and so he could prep all has deep strike shennanigans. We get to the start of turn 3, I'm ready to move onto the centre objective, the only one on the board. I whiff on shooting some things but my Psyker manages to kill 3 termies in 1 squad with his maelstrom so I was feeling pretty good regardless. So I've got all my infantry and their leaders, and 2 of my sentinels just about in range of the objective where I then hunker down and pucker my butthole for what is to come. My opponents turns 3 and 4 later I was down to just 1 squad of guardsmen they're leaders and my castellan and psyker had lost all there bodyguards and 1 sentinel. It was indeed a dire situation for my Guard and so naturally I did the one thing I knew that could at least guarantee me a victory. DUTY AND HONOUR!!!!! The order was given to all eligible units and our regimental standard was firmly hoisted above that objective. Then I prayed to Johnny Space harder then I had ever before. After a last couple of turns by my friends, we all counted up the OC of our units on the point... I controlled that point by 1, securing a hard fought victory for the Guard and handshakes all around the table. So from that point on, if anyone ever tells me Duty and Honour is a useless order, I have a tale to tell them indeed...

I suspect those people with lots of officers and too little infantry just don't want to paint a few dozen more models...

If other factions had someone doing for them what you and a handful of others are doing for The Guard the whole hobby would be better for it.

14:06 I agree having too many orders after your units start to disappear does no good… learned from experience.

When our codex comes out the week before 11th edition, I'd like it if they made it so Tech Priests could give orders to squadron units. I feel like that would make sense.

Orders not splashing within a tight radius is a joke. It's the opposite of a quality of life feature and with a super mediocre at best detachment rule is a massive limiting factor.

I will never understand why they removed order splashing.

I like using Guants Ghosts to support FOBs they are not easily targeted.

Hey Mordian.. I had an idea for a cheeky combo last night. Stracken, Harker, 10Catachans in a Chimera. Spits out 3 orders from inside the pillbox. Harker Blasts Payback out the top hatch.. (budget version you drop Harker) Not sure exactly what you’d use it for. Maybe the brain trust can help? Initial thoughts are maybe they babysit three Mortar Heavy Weapon Squads..?? (Although I guess for that you wouldn’t necessarily need the chimera..) Maybe you use it to support Sentinel Spam with orders..?? Thoughts

Let's see... Units that always get an order? Death Korps. You're taking the marshal for that 5+ save anyway. Shadowswords. Hitting on a 3+ with heavy is nice, but hitting on a 2+ is insurance. Those big guns NEED to hit to justify the points cost. Hitting on 2s and rerolling 1s is even better, which leads us to... Scout sentinels. No orders. They're not here to deal damage. They're here to Daring Recon targets that absolutely need to die. Others that don't get an officer? Kasrkin. They can order themselves. Stacking is nice, but it's not 45 points for a castellan nice.

Only units im skipping on atm are stuff like the aforementioned scions, sentinels who can throw out their own buffs, the basic russ who come with buff built in, sacrificial infantry and maybe kaskrin if i have to. Maybe im going overkill with orders but 50% hit rates or the option for other buffs seems essential but im a noob i guess...

Could you make a video on how much infantry a list needs? I was told my list with 60 guardsmen was too much and most competitives players bring 20-30 max.

I was just gifted a nicely sized guard army. 40 shock troops, 3 Russ, chimera, armored sentinel & cadian command squad. I bought a krieg Commisar because I want a guard and krieg army. I also received a cadia defense force box. If I get 2 10 man squads of krieg with a death korps marshall and lord solar is that enough to roll well?
