All you really need is a fuzz, buffer, compressor, a boost, distortion, hard clipping drive, soft clipping drive, EQ, and then another boost. That’s it, let’s not make this more complicated than it is. 😂
Man I love these shows!! Well put together. Well filmed. Other then educational on a topic I truly love, they’re just a good show to watch. Too many RU-vid videos that have great info, but are just so sloppily put together making it awkward and sometimes frustrating to watch. Thanks again guys!
17:37 Which is exactly why I don't understand that most people use a Klon as a booster. Using such a nicely engineered and designed topology as a boost is basically a waste of gain imho. Get a $60 treble booster and give the Klon to your bandmate who needs a nice overdrive. :)
Whenever I use overdrive my logic follows using the pickups selector to my advantage: Using a Stage 1 (Clean, no OD pedal): My neck puckup is completely clean, and the bridge position breaks the amp up a bit. Stage 2: Klon/Morning glory style drive Neck pickup sounds like the "clean" bridge position, but with a bit more gain. Bridge Pickup sounds like it is starting to get into tube screamer territory. Stage 3: Klon/MG + tube screamer style pedal Neck Pickup starts to get into lead territory, but can be used as a rhythm tone in "soft" rock Bridge Pickup can be used a the lead tone in "soft" rock, or a rhythm tone in hard rock Stage 4: OCD or Rat style pedal Neck is a lead tone that is not as piercing at the neck pickup Bridge is then used as a rhythm metal tone or ear-piercing lead if I need it (but still fitting within the venue's mix). Pedal chain: MG-->TS-->DS I might sometimes have a boost but only if the setlist requires me to have a tone higher than the full on distorted one. However, I just use the MG's red remote switch to get that boost. The middle position is a wild card for me, but I find myself never really using the middle position on a 3 single coil or 2 HB guitar. Sorry for the long read, but just wanted to share this because I get so many tones out of this strategy and lets me have so many stages if the band needs the energy.
Hello Dan and Mick, I started watching TPS about six months ago and I love it , maybe obsessively so. At the moment Iam up to 43 pedals most of which are overdrives and distortion pedals. I had to stop and think that maybe I need something dofferent like reverb, cjorus delay, tremolo etc. I am hooked I cannot stop. Boys, fuzz s not all I need, I need more! Thankyou for a great show which is informative and entertaining. AK
The possibilities get exponential the more pedals you use. 1 pedal: A 2 pedals: A, B, AB, BA 3 pedals: A, B, C, AB, AC, ABC, ACB, BA, BC, BAC, BCA, CA, CB, CBA, CAB.
Seriously, I’ve had a drink or two, but another idea. There and back again. Finding out that your initial intuitions were right for you, even though you had a instructional education on what isn’t your tone. Finding that home was great and so was the journey.
How well timed! My partner (an amateur guitarist who just plinks around on their Tele occasionally) genuinely turned around to me just as we were about to get into bed last night and said "Why are there so many types of Overdrive, why can't there just be one that does it all". I think Carl Longbottom may have been able to hear my head explode all the way in Geordie-land. Safe to say there was then another half an hour of me explaining the different types of gain and why digital overdrive isn't where I would like it to be for it to be in my sound (and most of the guitarists that I look up to sound - Dave Simpson being a very clear example of one of the ones using digital OD) - I think they may have regretted saying anything at all...!
Very interesting guys! I’ve just reduced the number of gain stages on my board from 5 to 3. My main distortion is now a Magnetic effects White Atom fuzz which has a good eq and other gain stages are a Chase Bliss Condor, which adds further drive and eq plus midi control and an original Hudson broadcast. Huge number of sounds especially if you use the guitar volume and tone knobs.
@@locationbacklinepianos7312 The Klon (klone) does it's best work as a colored boost/always on, IMO. Its more saturated OD aspects are covered about as well by other pedals that are much cheaper. But the tone enhancement it adds to an amps' cleans...unmatched.
Thanks gents, great show, perfect timing. I'm working on a pedalboard with room for three gain stages for a gig. I recently acquired a Benson preamp which is great fun, but trying to work it in and get tones I need is a puzzle, and I would like to use the guitar volume for cleanup. You reminded me of several factors-especially not losing volume when adding a pedal. Fodder for my experiments!
Yes, how you use the pedal, and what you're trying to achieve. These types of shows always remind me of the same two things: 1) a database I've built over the years that contains recordings and samples of hundreds and hundreds of overdrive pedals. Yes, I said hundreds and hundreds; 2) That said, I only own two (2) pedals that I consider my "overdrive" pedals: Blackstone Appliances Mosfet Overdrive (aka the BAMO), and the Hudson Broadcast. That's it. I've been able to achieve everything I've ever needed with these two live or in a studio recording environment. Given the relative plasticity of terms as they are used here, I would further add that I have only 1 pedal that self-identifies as specifically a "Fuzz" pedal. It has a "shit-ton" of head room and variac functionality. So a possible total of 3 pedals then....
Thanks for this video, guys. I sometimes get self conscious about having a fuzz, treble booster, and 4 overdrives on one board, but this makes me feel ok about it. Did I mention that two of the drives are dual drives…so maybe I am crazy….or maybe…..I need MORE!?
Ok the palet as a pedalboard is absolutely fitting the theme of this episode spot on! 😂 Thx to this episode, I placed my gain stages like this: green big muff-NRG poker -Okko Diablo plus, using the treble booster to lift the fuzz for solos, and before the overdrive to heavy rythme, then the “+ “ side of the Diablo is lifting everything again when needed. Thx again guys!! 👍🏻 cheers!
You know what? These shows are great for sure. But I really miss the good old ”Pick ’n’ Mix” shows. Every show doesn’t have to be on a specific subject. I really enjoy the ”here is some new pedals we’ve come over and here is our thoughts”-vibe.
Pick N Mix views were too low vs the cost of making the shows unfortunately. Turns out many people just thought we were trying to sell them stuff! It’s a shame because we liked em too!
@@ThatPedalShow I agree, the varied pedal reviews are/were great. Perhaps being well established now, maybe the viewers are more in phase with you guys now that they won't think you're trying to directly sell them?
I have 4 overdrives on my live pedalboard. But I think I can live with two of them. I can live without second drive(bluesbreakery style+boost) and fuzz. But I can't live without tubescreamer and Guv'nor. They both are soooo usefull! They together covers most overdrive colors for me other two i'm keeping for the case...
That looks like my pedal board! I have a pedal board just with overdrive/gain/fuzz’s. I have a big muff, metal muff, hoof reaper, plexi drive, SL overdrive, tumnus deluxe, ratsbane, EVH 5150 overdrive, angry Charlie, morning glory, the belle and a ODR-1
JAM Eureka or Keely Fuzzbender, Strymon Compadre (3 different boost EQs + compressor), your favorite OD, Analogman modded GE-7. That is, to me, the most versatile but scaled down drive section I can make. Now it’s 4 pedals, but well, we are watching that pedal show!
I love you two and this show. I've found my tribe. Great work! I've picked up 11 OD type pedals since I started watching TPS a year ago. 3 of those, Gladio, Dualist and D&M drive are dual OD pedals. Then there's the MK II preamp with its many OD offerings. Always room for 1 more. Thanks and....cheers!
I'd like to see a video where you talk about using amp distortion as the main distortion sound, and how you would use pedals with that type of amp. The amp I'm using is a carstens grace, a 1 channel high gain distortion, and rather than lugging two amps around, i'd rather keep it simple with the one amp.. but i also love using my effects!!
Between the Strat show last week and this one, my tone and dynamics are 100% better. Picked up a TS to match with an old Squire Strat. What a revelation! Thanks Dan and Mick.
I run my Klon like that 🤘 as an overdrive, it’s a great mid focused distortion, for me a better option than a TS type. (FYI I run my pedals from lower to higher gain generally)
Klon as boost, TS as OD and Rat as distortion: that's exactly what I'm running now... - NOT ENOUGH!!! - a Blues Driver is on my way ...and down the rabbit hole I go
We’ll done, guys. How about a companion video on stacking modulation pedals: how many modulation pedals to have, when and whether to stack different types, etc.
I have more than 19 overdrive pedals. Fellas before I started watching TPS, I had like 3. I am pretty sure I don’t “need” more than 3.... but psychiatrists it is. Perhaps this was always going to be the natural end...
Almost there. Got about 15. But my problem is BD-1's. 4 of them, Waza Crap, Keeley, stock, and on my board a Alchemy modded 1. Want to do a comparison video but don't have the proper equipment.
I enjoy building pedals from mail order PCBs as well as point to point fuzz pedals, as a result have tons of drive/fuzz/distortion pedals. I have only the most limited feel for most of them because I’ve spent so little time with them. I think it takes a lot of time to get intimate with a pedal My question to you is. “Out of all of the drive you each have. How many do you think you know inside out vs just having a pretty good idea, or or only a basic idea?”
The ones I use regularly I know intimately. Mick here. And then once you’ve played hundreds of em with all the main kinds of amps over a couple of decades, it doesn’t take long to get intimate with any kinds ‘normal’ analogue OD / boost / dist / fuzz. Digital brings a whole other bag of trouble, and I remain uninterested in that. Cheers! Mick here
I think that’s impressive, so as long as you were given a drive that more or less in a “drive family” you know, you could work you way around it to do a gig? I guess I could sort of do that. I guess what I meant how many drives feel like your favorite jeans (trousers) you’ve worn for years, or your favorite English Roast (that was you wasn’t it?) 😊
Guys, I really think what you said about using the eq character of your pedals to works around the eq character of your guitar has dropped the penny for many a frustrated tone seaker, myself included. As always thank you so much for all you do🙏👍
@@ThatPedalShow and using mid push in to scoop, as in screamer in to rat etc, should be so obvious, but I guess I'm not as far on my path to enlightenment as I hoped 🤣🤦♂️, thank you once again 👍
Yah, and Footsteps by Pearl Jam of course. I’ve been spinning the TOTD record quite a bit recently. Mick here. Chris Cornell man. Love that guy may he RIP.
@@ThatPedalShow Hi Mick I'm sure you know, but in case you haven't herd. Brad is one of Stones side projects from '97 there c.d. Interiors is Mega .The day brings ,and those three words are just two of the most amazing tracks from imo one of the most criminally underrated albums of that era .
D W Guitars planing my Fender maple neck and fitting quality ebony fingerboard, fretted with Dunlop 6100, bone nut. Cheaper than I expected. Only £175. Heaven here I come...
Mini Fuzz Si > Dane > Tube Screamer > Morning Glory and I feel like a 5th is often needed so 4(5 really counting Danex2) isn’t that many at all. We’re all fine and normal
Drive pedals are just different flavours of boost for me. It's all about pushing an already driving amp. The only part I can't decide is if I prefer 808 > Klone or Klone > 808 best. (Also if there's a pedal that basically does that in one box, that would be cool and save me some space.)
Ok, i have four but they are on two different boards. On my main board. I have a Mad Professor Bluebird…..a great foundational OD IMO. Then I have an Xotic Effects Soul Driven, that I stack with it at times. My home board has an original “gooped” Hermida ZenDrive and a Catalinbread DLS MK III. So far that’s it. My SuperSonic 60W is in an Iso-cab and has great growl set at 4, so doesn’t need much extra help.
Another awesome dive into gain stacking/pedal order, a tough subject at times! After rewatching one of your visits to AnalogMan I've decided to get on the wait list for a KoT to augment my Diamond Fireburst, can't go wrong with that! ;)
So I need a Boost Board, maybe two, and a Drive Board, or two, and a Modulation Board, an Analog Delay Board, and a Digital Delay Board, and a few Quarter Masters. Let's do it.
To my knowledge, most notable klon players use the Klon as an overdrive with the gain at least half way up, otherwise those famous diodes will not clip. Its only recently in the pedal world that a lot of people have been using it with no gain.
Maybe. I think Grissom and Mayer used it lower. If I’m remembering right. I think I’ve asked them both down the years. (Honk). Maybe Warren Haynes too but I didn’t interview him. It really depends on how the amp is set. Some people love it as an overdrive, some people like it for the massive headroom. In fact that massive headroom is probably more interesting - in terms of the uniqueness of what it can do - than any magic clipping diodes. But however you use it, it’s ace!
@@ThatPedalShow There is a reason it gets so much hype! You're definitely right regarding how the amp is set. johnmayergear on IG has several pics up of Mayer's settings, ranging from about 9 o'clock to 2 o'clock...presumably due to the amp he was using at the time, the room, etc...
For me, 2 main gain stages and a lead pedal is what does it for me. The JHS Haunting Mids is my standard low gain with a bit of upper mids boosted, A Mad Professor Little Green Wonder as the medium gain. kick em both in for some extra chonk. and for lead stuff I kick in the Coriolis Effects Systech Harmonic Energizer clone, takes the already boosted mids and gives a bit of extra honk and life. I don't think it counts as far as overdrive imo, But if we are counting Fuzzes, the Catalinbread Perseus is an absolute monster (it's basically an updated Blue Box)
Killer Tele! I need to get a good set Wide Range Humbuckers for my Mexican Tele Deluxe, the Fender Reissues with the Alnico Bar Magnets actually are not bad of you change the pots to 500K from the 250K Pots they come with.
How about the MXR EVH 5150 Overdrive? What's everyone's thoughts on this one, and if you have one, what kinds of tones are you going for, other than EVH?
It took until this episode from the very beginning to come from my subconscious into my conscious brain this thought: Why do Mick's glasses never fall off his forehead???? I don't wear glasses but it has always unknowingly puzzled me that they can perch on his brow with such confidence and unerring ways
So awesome. I’m with Mick, after 3 and it gets beyond me. Show idea: “great guitar tone”. We hear it all the time, but what does it mean - but do it in a historically referential way to teach newcomers to guitar what that actually is. For example, why did Jimi have great tone, why did Clapton have great tone, the Kings, Stevie, Mayer, Gilmour, and on and on. I think new players struggle to find their sound because they struggle when so many names come up who have great sound - but WHY are their tones considered great. Or not, it’s your show.
This week Caveman Audio posted a picture of the rig they built for Kevin Shields of My Bloody Valentine. 60 pedals, mostly fuzzes. You still have a long ways to go, lads.
Overdrive, Fuzz and Distortion will increase the signal while distorting the sound. a boost will increase the signal of specific frequencies or full without distorting to specifically push the amp. Boost is a different category. my 50 cents, what do I know compared to you guys anyways :)
@@ThatPedalShow As I said, I not near as knowledgeable as you guys :) Frankly I had one treble boost and it pushed my amp but I never touch checking it the pedal is actually distorting :) I did found a very special boost which is made somewhere in America by two people and it's really special. they dont even have a website or even a way to buy, it's like direct contact but it's amazing. I found it through one of the people in wildwood which really recommended that, he said that its a game changer... It's call the Intensifier... thats the only thing I know about it, I'll get it in the next few weeks, I am excited :) Have you guys heard about it?
I 'downgraded' my home board to - Klon clone, TS clone, Shur Riot clone (Satchurator is currently on hiatus). I needed to make room for the BOSS DD-500, RV-500 & EQ-200
Do you guys need an after hours security crew? I could come in after hours and make sure everything is in working order and guard the pedals. Marine veteran, one shot, one kill....pedals will be in good hands. :). (this idea was brewed up while watching your videos and noticing that you have practically ever pedal known to musicians, and how can I be so lucky to be in this environment on a daily basis)
I loved listening to the podcast of this show while driving at work, but I haven’t seen any podcast versions of the show since January. Are podcasts still available?
Yeah, you should stopped after explaining the difference between boost, overdrive, and distortion. When you start stacking five or six overdrives together, and, increasingly, lower the drive and volume on each pedal, what are you really doing? It all sounds very discernable in the end. Love this channel, btw...
Love your videos as always I have an idea for a video you should have Mason from Vertex Effects on the show. I think that would be a awesome episode. Hope you guys are doing well? Again thanks for the awesome videos.
@@ThatPedalShow I would like to see what you guys think about his pedals also since Dan and Mason build boards it would be interesting to get a glimpse of what they would do with some of the differences and similarities to what they would do in building a rig. Just thought it would interesting and knowledgeable.
