Ok, I'm so glad this showed up in my feed. When you pulled out your roller and used that to pierce your cap wax, I was interested. I shelved those rollers years ago, but now may have to revisit them. I noticed that at one station your daughter is using the roller, but your mother was also using a fork at another station for cap removal. Are you noticing much of a difference in getting more honey out with one method over another? Last question, why would reversing the rotation result in more honey removal? Thank you for sharing, and I still use your excellent hive tools :) Wishing you all the best!
@TheHoneystead
@TheHoneystead Год назад
Hey there! This was my first time with the roller and I didn’t mind it, but it did throw wax cappings which did slow down the initial straining process. The fork is slower, but I get cleaner honey! I know that there are a beekeepers that share that I don’t need to reverse the direction, but we find that it does help clear the honey from the cells a little better! Ohhh you should see the next hive tools we have coming out ;) I need to go to the hive conference!

"In Germany, the cover on the honey extractor is made of 'Plexiglas,' so it's transparent. You might consider replacing it so that you can see what's happening inside the honey extractor even when the cover is closed." "The larger the diameter of the honey extractor, the less it wobbles. My old honey extractor had a diameter of 75 cm (29.5 inches), while the new one has a diameter of 90 cm (35.4 inches). It's incredible how smoothly this honey extractor rotates. I can place 42 honey frames (Dadant US) inside." Herbert

Huh, I don't know about the left/right thing...I thought the whole point of a radial was that you don't have to flip frames, even if it only goes one direction.......I mean, I just have a 4 frame tangential so I'm flipping frames regardless........But it's interesting.....

Great video! If you let the extractor spin on a lower speed for a few minutes and gradually increase the speed, it will help to better balance it before spinning it up to a faster / fastest speed.

If you slice caps off you’ll have a more balanced load for the extractor. By having different levels of cells on the frames, it is hard to properly balance. Think of throwing a weight off of a tire. Small amounts make a huge impact.

I'm at 25 colonies and have been up to 50. Our place is not near as fancy as yours. You have a fine apiary and work place. Mine's on a hillside I call th stump garden. And, I do have another on flat land in a pine forest. We got a 12 frame extractor last year. Works nice but, if I had more colonies I'd need a bigger extractor. I bought a Woodmizer hydraulic mill in 1995 and sold it in 2006. Still have lumber laying around. Fun watching you make splits and talking about your turkey. Don't get too many bees ahead of yourself. They can multiply really fast and decline in about the same time if you get ahead of yourself. Not fun to lose 20 colonies. Yes, I did that last winter.

Thank you for sharing , love your videos and love the new barn! One great tip my mentor told me is don't put spouts on all the buckets. They can get knocked and/or just leak. Plus it's an added unnecessary expense. Better to just have it on a few. A couple of days before bottling transfer the honey to a spout bucket. Then just keep filling up that 'bottling bucket' as needed and let it settle a day. The bubbles and wax stay at the top. Or, for bigger operations like yours, have a dedicated stainless steel honey bottling tank with a no drip filling spout.

Hi again! My two cents... In order to prevent much wiggling(wobbling) try to put frames with same amount of honey on opposite sides. I have similar extractor for 20 deep frames and I always try to balance before I put it to work. It saves me lots of energy for "holding it down". :)

Great video informative learned some things I knew nothing about loved it. You’re talking about bolting the spinner to the floor I can understand why, but would like to make a suggestion. My recommendation would be to get a heavy duty reinforced pallet. Pour a concrete slab on top of the pallet then tile it. With it being bolted to a concrete slab on a heavy pallet, you will be able to move it around the shop no problem it will be solid and not go anywhere and if you have to transport it, you pick it up with a forklift and go. With it being tiled, it will be easy to clean any spills and messes also being able to move it around the shop, you’ll be able to clean all the areas behind it with much more ease. And if the layout of your shop changes in the future, it will be no big deal moving in around. It’s just something I would probably do.

Put sand bags or other weights on your stand to weigh it down, and start spinning slow and increase every couple of minutes. Stop when it start to wobble and let it spin for 2-4 minutes and then you can increase a little more. To speed things up, you are going to find the double sieve plugs up too fast. Take a 5 gallon pail and drill a large hole on the bottom on the side. Put a cone of window screen over the top of the pail going close to the bottom of the pail. Then dump the in the screened pail to catch the large bits of wax and then strain it as it comes out. You get more time out of your strainer before having to clean it.

You do know honey losses it's minerals and nutrients and enzymes when honey is heated and filtered right. Do your research, so you can produce a better quality of honey and healthier honey for the immune system. Pure raw wild honey is what helps your body.

You would do well to buy a new or used honey tank to let the wax rise to the top and then run through a double sieve. It would involve pouring partial buckets into the tank, but it will greatly reduce the time to filter without having to constantly clean the sieve.

I stopped pulling honey August 1 st 2023 THEN began Oxalic Acid fogging the first round, then fog again 14 days later because more bees emerge with mites on them. It from all the full buckets and 1 pound containers filled already we might get over 1,500 pounds. Just got 1,000 pounds last year.. That is only a drop in the bucket compared the the Canadian bee keeper Bob Binie in Georgia. I'm wanting to slow down and sell half my bees. With 12 helpers my bees out ran all of us this year.
