Stephen King got so many rejection slips from magazines, that the nail he was putting them on fell out the wall. So he got a bigger nail. We aren't necessarily going to have the career of King, and maybe wouldn't even want to, but we can adopt the right mindset to rejection; be persistent and try to learn what you can from each setback. When writing, we need to separate rejection from our own self worth and our own creative work, or 'talent'. Not everyone is going to love what we write, and there are no guarantees at all in making art, which is why the process is more rewarding than the outcome, and the end result will never quite be as we hoped, even if it's as good as we can make it.

Oh thank you SO much, Alyssa, for getting to my question. I was so discouraged about the state of publishing that I was thinking I should stop querying. Your words set my head on straight. I’m so grateful.

Got last night my first rejection for my latest work. Still few more agents to hear back from, still hoping to get a YES and I can be happy.

Hey Alyssa! Well done on another great video (Will be using it as a podcast on my car rides hehe). Here is a question for future videos: "Some of my books are written in Greek, and I am translating/interpreting them in English, before sending them out there. Though, some times I have 30 or so pages translated out of 100. Is it professional to let an agent know about this when they ask for the full manuscript?"

Hey Alyssa, so I hear you talk about about how it is necessary to reach out to a great number of agents but also hear you say how judicious one should be when choosing who to reach out to. I have been doing my research and after hours online found only around ten to fifteen agents that I thought might be well-suited for my project. I have also heard you say that I shouldn't query more than one agent at any given agency. What are the best resources you know of to help me find agents to query? Do you know of any strategies to finding agents that align with my genre?

Looked to me like the going rate for a real professional editor was around four cents a word.

Question: I have written a fantasy novel but it’s long 243,000 words give or take. I’m doing a serious self edit and trying to cut as much as I can without hurting the story. What I want to know is when I am done the edit should I try to query agents with it even though it’s longer than the recommend length particularly for a first book or would it be better to try to write a shorter novel and try that one first? Thanks for doing this channel, it’s so helpful.

+1 to what Brian Cole said, there will not be many agents that will take a client over 150k words, especially over 200k words, even for a fantasy epic

I'm a writer. I expect to have my first story completely done, ready to publish in 2023. I'm on the fence between traditional publishing and self publishing because I turn 58 on the 21st. My best guess: If I begin submitting to agents, I'd contact 100 of them. But, time-wise, what would come next. Does it really take 5 years from "got an agent" to "book on shelf"?

Just my opinion, but I think we won't ever know how long it will take, and therefore thinking about it is just wasting energy. It seems that the best piece of advice I hear is to focus on your career/progress rather than one individual story. If this is a real passion project, maybe it's worth putting something else together first and try self publishing. Writing another story would give you perspective on your first one, and perhaps give you extra tools that make your first story easier to sell. I say this as someone who probably needs to follow that advice and begin another story. But everyone is different of course. If time is a priority over all else, maybe getting feedback (like a professional editor) on what you've written will save you a lot of time in the query process.

Thank you so much Alyssa! Just a few questions. I can't afford an editor but can I get the same level of expertise or something close to it from you? I'm asking because I might join your Patreon once I get the critique and feedback from my beta readers, and once I have a finished first draft. Also, when it comes to editors, assuming an agent does accept me for a client, wouldn't the publishing agency they work for provide an editor once they accept the manuscript? Again, thank you so much for going over my comment. See you at the next Q and A!!😊

You can find some cheap editors through Facebook on various book groups and Fiverr. That's how I found mine without braking the bank and I went for the simplest editing process to make sure my book sound good enough as I suffer from mild dyslexia. I can answer your last question: Once you get an agent, they will use their editors.
@Ruylopez778
@Ruylopez778 Год назад
I think the reason people hire a freelance editor before or during querying is because it can make the manuscript more appealing to agents. Of course, the agent will probably want revisions as will the publisher. Some agents don't want to 'take on a project' though. They just want something that is basically ready to be submitted to publishers. It seems some agents are very 'hands-on' and some agents aren't. I think the danger for the writer is that they might feel that their manuscript is finished, but the agent doesn't.

Is it a good idea to write your book like a movie script? I find it way easier and more fun to tell a story.
@Redskirt

I'm not a publishing professional, but I have written plays, screenplays and novels, and I have to agree that writing screenplays is the most fun. However, reading screenplays is not very fun. They lack the depth of description and subtext that create a satisfying world and story. When you watch a movie, there are a lot of people who supply the necessary aspects: production designers, set decorators, costumers, actors, etc. With a novel, all that work is done by the writer, that's why it's so hard. But hard is what makes it great. Almost no one wants to read a play or screenplay, unless they're going to make it. Lots of people read novels (and short stories), and if you want your work read, that's what you'll need to write. (JK Rowling got Harry Potter and the Cursed Child published because she's JK Rowling. I have a copy, and I still haven't read it, lol)

Hello. I am a bulgarian writer and a couple of months ago i finished with all the work on my debut book. I sent a synopsis, short biography and part of my manuscript to a book publisher and now its month 3rd that i am waiting for a response. In the publisher`s official site is said that an eventual response is to be received between 1 to 3 months but i am starting to get nervous. My question is: is it an option to send my stuff to multiple publishers or one at a time? Also if i dont get a response which i guess means they havent liked my stuff is it a good idea to send it again or to leave it be? I really hope for you to answer on this becasue im kinda feeling lost and would highly appreciate someone`s help/ advice. Thanks in advance and greetings from Bulgaria.
