Hi sir I got most part of your vdo, but I have one serious doubt and its bothering me a lot,as I am about to build a diy home theater,so for example a low sensitivity speaker will have around 88db@1w@1mtr, 91db@2w,(3db increase by doubling watt) 94db@4w, 97db@8w, 100db@16w, So the same speaker Will have 6ohm,10watt on the backside,does that mean it will produce 97-100db (because 97to100db lies between 8w-16w from the above chart) at 10watt at 1mtr distance.

Well, bigger currents are harder to handle, consume more power and generate more heath. That all can be fixed by spending money. Only if the same sound quality can not be achieved by higher efficient speakers, you might find it acceptable. As you obviously did.

It's about heath. Keeping the cone 'in the same position' needs the full current for the length of the cycle which generates far more heath in the voice coil than for instance a sine wave will. It is the heath that eventually kills either the voice coil or melt the glue that holds the former on the cone.

Like if you connect a perfectly matched speaker to the amplifier and play a square wave at 50% volume, it is the same as a distorted sine wave from a weak (with half the needed power) amplifier? Are cars better than motor cycle?. They both are alternative solutions for the same problem but with different accents (and far less apart than cars and motor cycles;-)

They usually do, but not all distortion is equally audible. For example, odd-order harmonic distortion (3rd, 5th, etc.) can be heard much more easily than even-order (2nd, 4th, etc.). Also a tube's maximum output is not a "brick wall" like solid-state devices. They actually limit themselves as they become hotter, unlike the thermal runaway of bipolar (NPN and PNP) transistors.

Not all distortions are equally audible to each individual. Therefore general answers don't help that much. I am still thinking about a way to explain the difference. Will take some time.

Measured differences between triode, pentode, and solid-state overload distortion are quite consistent. Solid-state devices produce much more high-order harmonics (more than 10x) than either triodes (lowest, 2nd dominates) or pentodes (somewhat higher, 3rd dominates).

Solid state amps use either Field Effect Transistor's (FET) or Bipolar Transistors (BJT) for the output stage. FET's like Vacuum tubes are current (measured in amps) devices while BJT's are voltage devices. As measured in a normal operating range (not the overload condition mentioned below) Vacuum tubes have more distortion, but it is even order harmonic distortion. Some prefer the sound of Vacuum tubes (a warm sound) versus solid state neutral sound. It is likely that the power supply in the amp make more quality difference than tubes versus solid state. Usually the heaviest amp wins.

In theory, doubling(or halving) impedance should result in doubling or halving of power output. There really is no way to know for sure without measuring. Having said that, you could run an 8ohm speaker on an amp that's rated for less(3 in this case). You will have less power output because of the increased resistance. Everything else equal(distance, speaker efficiency, etc) that 8ohm speaker will be slightly quieter. I think you're more likely to hear a difference in "loudness" due to speaker efficiency rather than power(watts) supplied. Even if you only get 50 watts with the higher resistance, that's only a 3 db change. Noticeable but just barely

I doubt the Sony is pouring out that much power or else the little speakers would billow smoke if you cranked the volume.

1st: Tube amps go louder than solid state for reasons not yet discovered. Some claim a factor 10! 2nd: The loudspeaker(s) in a guitar amp go less deep and every octave further down requires double the power. 3rd: The efficiency of the loudspeaker(s) in a guitar amp is much higher since there is no closed or ported cabinet and they are also bigger than the speakers in your car. 4th: Distortion of guitar speakers will be a lot higher without anyone complaining. That also increases efficiency (play louder by the same amount of watts)

Hello, I'm in the process of shopping for a PA amplifier... I want to connect 2 speakers/cabinets, in parallel, to each channel of a stereo PA amplifier. Each speaker is rated 300 watts to 600 watts peak, 8 Ohms; I understand the load will reduce to 4 Ohms, per channel, when wired in parallel to the amplifier. Could you please advise on an ideal wattage (above the believed combined 600 watts per side) to shop for which would optimise this combination without the worry of frying my speakers ... how much headroom from the amplifier would be ok please? Many thanks in advance.

Having experience with PA equipment I can be of some assistance. How ever you still haven't specified what you want to achieve. W hat is the purpose; Speach or music? Is this for a mobile application or an installation? I presume that you are talking about four identical speakers but you do not provide this small detail. It's not critical but it can have an effect on performance. If you wonder I ran a mobile discotheque in my youth and I'm an electronics technician with experience from PA systems dealing with announcements on train terminals. A general rule of thumb is to have an amp that can deliver at least 25% more power, than the speakers can handle in order to not have to worry about clipping if you are going to play the speakers at full power... In essense the principles discussed in the video apply to your setup as well. You will be looking for an amplifier with 750+ watt into 4 ohms if you need to push the speakers to their limits and not risk destroying the speakers due to clipping. Or you can go for 4 channels with 375 watts each. wich ever you prefeer. depending on your budget I'd go with 4 channels as it will increase the versatility of the system; Say you want to expand the system with dedicated subs and use active X-overs, having 4 channels to work with will give you that oppotunity. Clipping is your speakers worst enemy. It will destroy your bass drivers quickly so make sure you have an excess of power in any setup. working with this amount of power requires you to understand the limitations of every component in the system. There's a reason there are dedicated educations teaching people how to setup and run large PA systems Depending on the way that you need to use your speakers I strongly recommend you go read some related forums to gain more knowledge of what you're asking and understanding the answers you get in return. good luck

It depends on the sensitivity of the speakers, the frequency content of the music, how loud you want to play. Are you in the situation where you are trying to get the most out of the speakers? Usually higher powered amps will give you the most clean performance but you have to lock the volume control from your kids and crap DJs. Also power ratings for multi way speakers depend on the frequency content of the music which is actually the real issue with "clipping". Rap is going to make demands on the woofer, rock on the midrange and hardstyle on the tweeter. You turn up an underpowered amp by 3 dB to get louder and you might get 1dB more to the woofer 4 to the mid and 6 to the tweeter instead of an even 3 dB extra to every speaker. The higher powered clean amp is actually sending less to the tweeter than the clipped amp. The positive of clipping is it sounds terrible so you want to turn it back down rather than blast speakers with glorious clean sound until suddenly the sound peters out. ( This happens most on speakers limited by voice coil rather than travel). Also are you filtering out low frequencies? I can do damage to my DJ subwoofers with just a 40 watt power per channel amp if I pay a 10 to 20 tone through them which is below the box tuning.

Considering how much time, energy, effort and $ most audiophiles invest in their systems, I have often wondered why so few of us have not bothered to spend the needed time, and little amount of $, investing in such a valuable tool Maybe, some of wary of what objective results they might see?

One would think with the massive amount of music that is now digital and the science behind the encoding of MP3's etc, someone would have put together a piece of software that would capture the waveform like a scope. Im willing to bet its been done.

As someone that is into electronics in general I would be one that would be doing things like the scope analysis. Back in my younger days there were 3 of us that were basically testing radios, amps, and speakers. The one guy ran a shop that had access to the components. Scientific or not we concluded that an amp with the lowest THD produced the best sound. Of course this was in the early 80s. That and we loved it LOUD. lol That and we never drove the amp or the speakers near their rated values. Drives me nuts to hear cars these days where all it sounds like is busted speakers. No quality of sound. They want to hear beat and that's it. I'm in no way an audiophile. If I was I certainly wouldn't be stuck with that radio my car came with. lol I do love catching bits and pieces that people are working on. These days I'm playing with microcontrollers and capturing and playing back speech but it doesn't require near the quality. So I enjoy the discussions.

All small amounts of clipping do is affect the sound quality. The question is does the tweeter exceed its maximum power rating as a severely clipped signal has a disproportionate amount of high frequencies compared to most music genres. Also rock and hardstyle and "bro step" are more likely to overload tweeters and if you severely clip them even more so.

You have more than enough power for those speakers unless you want to fill a house party.

Absolutely.

Your AV receiver certainly won't deliver 7 x 50 = 350 watts. Only close to 180 watts if vey efficient class D power amps are used. S0 7 x 25 watts. I consider that bad practice by the manufacturer. Luckily only three channels in a 7.1 setup will cary energy: left, right and sub. The sub has it's own amp. The surround channels, even if full range speakers are used, will cary only little energy with perhaps the exception of occasional bursts for effects.

@@TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel it's an class A/B amp, so probably not even 180W then. It is a shame that specs do not always seem to help the normal consumer without having a deeper understanding. It doesn't work that way. As such you are safe with your equipment but if you play so loud that the amp starts to seriously distort, you can still ruin your speakers. It's like with a car. if it is able to do 200 kph, it doesn't mean you can drive 200 kph through every curve....

Good question! The energy doubles each octave down. If your main system is specified to have a roll off from 40 Hz, having the sub take over at 80 Hz gives a 3 dB added efficiency. But since the efficiency of loudspeakers normally is measured at 1 kHz, I would just use the spreadsheet and don't take the sub into account. Don't forget the calculation is an approximation, assuming a given room size, wall properties, furniture and so on.
