There are so many ways to use wood chips around the homestead. You can use them in the garden or orchard as mulch. You can use the wood chips in landscaping for walkways or paths. You can make compost out of wood chips. You can use the wood chips as bedding for animals. You can use wood chips to cover muddy areas in the barnyard. You can use wood chips in the pig pen to help keep the smell down. There are so many uses for wood chips. Today I am going to try to use up most of my pile of wood chips around the homestead.

Good idea putting them in the pig pen and chicken coop. Next year clean out both, and put it on the garden or pasture, it will continue to break down and be great natural fertilizer.

Wood chips will not Rob your soil of nitrogen as long as you keep them on top of the soil. If you work the chips into the soil it will deprive your soil of nitrogen. Been using wood chips for a decade now with great success.!!!!
@Bigdaddyluv68
@Bigdaddyluv68 5 лет назад
Roy Stacey yes only the very surface where the chips touch will experience any nitrogen loss but in a short time that too will actually reverse and the chips begin to feed the soil. None of the plant roots, (which are much lower) will even notice there is a slight nitrogen loss above ground. They will. However benefit from temperature regulation, moisture fixing and eventual decomposing of said chips.

@@Bigdaddyluv68 I lucked out with about the best soil on the planet, bottomless loam in lowlands farther NorCali. I've spread 3 truck loads of chips in recent months and expecting more. Have some 70 productive trees, bushes, vines and more coming. Apples to avocados. Essentially 100% organic, also make batches of 'biochar' from my burn piles. Things are pretty good but plenty more to learn.

Carbon in the woodchips reacts with the nitrogen the pigs deposit and not only reduces the smell but enriches the soil as it enthusiatically composts. In your barnyard that will encourage bugs that your chickens will really enjoy eating.

I've been using bagged hardwood mulch from Lowes in the springtime for weed control for many years in our flower beds and it seldom lasts over a year. By the time next spring rolls around it is mostly broken down. Now the pine bark mulch seems to last a little longer. I use that around our azaleas and hydrangea because they like it. Our azaleas really like pine straw.

If you have a bare area with little to no tosoil. Try throwing some grass seed down then a bunch of hay over it. I’m not saying you’ll have golf course but I’ve been very surprised this year at how well it’s worked. Must be hay will make great topsoil over time.

Very nice way to recycle the waste from the tree that you had cut down. One way that I use some of that is on my backstop at my shooting range. I don't just use wood chips, but also small trees that I dig out with my back hoe. I have the material piled up and dump excess soil on top of it to make the backstop and make my shooting just a little bit safer. Eventually over the years it should probably make a little "hill".

I’m a certified arborist and also have a degree in forestry. Do use of wood chips are quite beneficial however I noticed you mention them being used as animal bedding to Will Chips I would not recommend for this purpose would be what chips from a cherry tree. Which are toxic to animals. Also walnut chips are phytotoxic I would not suggest use these in your garden beds perhaps areas you wish to keep weeds down...

Do you recycle the wood chip from your chicken coop by putting them around the fruit trees and plants in order that the poop will serve as a natural fertiliser while the wood chip serves a good medium. Can you think of any possibility that that might be detrimental to the plants for whatever reason?

OMG thank you for saying something about the mulch against the tree trunks! I was yelling at the screen until you did that. ;-) I've seen so many people mulch incorrectly I think I have some sort of pent-up mulch rage LOL. I too, have a big pile of wood chips for exactly the same reason as you, took a tree down. So far, I've mulched some perennial beds, my garlic and fall-planted potato beds, and my blackberry beds. I have had (crab)grass walkways for a long time, but they are a big pain between my trellises. I'm thinking about spreading the rest of the mulch as walkways. Really on the fence about that. I know it's been awhile since you published this video. Did you find that the wood chips as walkways harbored pests? That's what I'm most concerned about. Thanks and great video!

What I have found is that wood chips placed on the top of soil will not steal Nitrogen except the top couple of inches and it takes 2 or 3 years to compost. After 2 or 3 years I turn it under and then you really have a nitrogen problem. I usually add a layer of grass clippings to the chips when I mix it in. Then add some Blood Meal for the next year or two to satisfy the nitrogen depletion.
