How Maroon 5 CHANGED the Electric Guitar 

I’ve always thought James Valentine was criminally underrated, I never got a lot into Maroon 5’s later stuff but his playing on a lot of their early songs is really damn. Dude’s a great player and my band teacher at college looks a lot like Valentine, which I always found amusing

I think one of the ultimate barrier breakers in guitar snobs appreciating pop was when john Mayer finally went out on tour and the live fills he put into his shows made people realize damn this kid is more than just a pop guitar player, he can actually lay some unreal shit down

What’s cool is he went to Berklee while JM was also attending, hence why Maroon 5 opened up for JM in the early days!

Dude, amazing video. I've never been the biggest Maroon 5 fan but I've always appreciated James Valentine's guitar playing. Thanks for giving him some appreciation. There was one time I wanted to look up the guitar part for "Girls Like You" because I thought it sounded like a fun song to play. Lo and behold, James Valentine himself uploaded a video of how to play it. WHO DOES THAT? Us guitar players live in a world where if we want to learn a song, we have three separate tablatures open and 8 RU-vid videos of various covers. And yet here's Valentine just like, "Hey, I wrote it and this is how I play it. Have fun." I always thought that was super cool.

Mike, this topic gave me pause for a moment, and in my mind, pop is really the modern ensemble group. In other words, it's not a rock combo, or blues band, or progressive metal instrumentation, it's different instruments and styles coming together to support a song. Granted, in our bands and likes, yes you support one another, but here, all of the parts have to really gel and drive it. Reminds me when in high school we would do stage band ensemble and would do the Ides of March/Chicago style arrangements. Good topic.

James Valentine is a fantastic player, one of my favourites. Little did I know that Adam Levine is a surprisingly good player as well, he played a lot of guitar and even some solos on their early songs.

When i was younger, it was all about hard rock and metal. Shredding and power chords. Now that im okder, ive really started to appreciate what a lot of pop players bring to the table.

I guess I have nothing against pop music... worst I could say is there's certainly a few singers whose voices immediately get on my nerves whenever they come on the radio, but I think everybody has those things that just bug them. What I would say instead of "four chords" or "all sounds the same" is that it's the surface level of the music industry, and I usually find that when I'm looking for something that really speaks to me in any kind of artistic field I have to go deeper, sometimes even outside of the industry itself. And it so happens that I really tend to enjoy that hunt... enjoy it enough that these days I barely even bother spending with that would be called "pop", 'cause it's not nearly as much fun to *find* something that you don't have to look for.

Well he is a guitar player so its not that shocking that he knows a trick or two.. Pop musicians are just as skilled as any other genre of musicians.

Music is NOT about the instrument. Music is about manipulating the listener’s feelings. The instrument is one of the tools the musician uses to do this. The more one understands sounds and how they affect feelings the better that musician will be at their craft. “The blues ain’t about making yourself feel better. It’s about making other people feel worse and making a buck while you do it.” The Blues Man told Lisa on The Simpsons ;-)

Music isn't what it was in the 60's and 70's and will never get back to that ever again. The internet killed pop music. There are still creative geniuses making music as there always will be but they won't get the recognition that the Beatles received. Bands like Rare Americans are amazing but they aren't that big.

Why, as a guitarist, wouldn’t you want your music to be popular? Also pop is often harder to play than the usual guitar repertoire, simply because it is less showy.
