Though smoking rates in the United States are declining overall, the percentage of smokers who use menthol cigarettes is rising, according to Robert Jackler, MD, the Stanford School of Medicine's Edward C. and Amy H. Sewall Professor in Otolaryngology. This growing popularity of menthol cigarettes is driven by advertising targeting teenagers, women and Black Americans.
In this 90 Seconds, Lisa Kim speaks with Robert Jackler, MD, about how menthol cigarettes ads have targeted certain audiences over the last century.
Robert Jackler, MD, is an otologist-neurotologist who specializes in complex ear diseases. In 2006, Dr. Jackler and his wife Laurie founded the interdisciplinary research group Stanford Research Into The Impact of Tobacco Advertising which conducts research into the promotional activities of the tobacco industry.
Lisa Kim is Senior Manager of Media Relations for Stanford Medicine and Stanford Health Care. Lisa has a deep background in journalism, as she is an Emmy Award-winning journalist who has covered stories on both the national and local levels.

So,let meget this straight. They might be advertising to certain groups but whe do we as the human race take responsibility for our own actions. Did these companies place the cigarette in their mouth and light it? Did they force them against their will ro continue to smoke them? Why can't we stop blaming others for our actions? If you believe in God, didn't he give us the ability to make our on decisions? To make OUR own choices? It's time to stop blaming others for our decisions
