i love mgs v but the open world is really empty and theres a lot of mountains or open grass areas so theres a lot of unused space and not to mention i've been near road most of the time
I was really impressed with the open world, the way the map just opens out allowing you to go anywhere, you are not inhibited by any silly barriers like mountains or other impassable objects, you can literally go anywhere. I also loved the attention to detail of the world, I mean I actually felt like I was in Afghanistan, all the farmers just going around do their business, the little villages were thriving through the day with civillians going around their business but when the shooting started they would run for cover, the odd horse and cart on the road etc it all gave us that sense of immersion you expect from a AAA £45 game. I also liked the fact that the world was huge, I mean massive, this allowed the developers to create a huge range of missions in different areas of the map so that us the player were not having to resort to attacking the same bases over and over again doing the same kind of missions over and over again. This is one of the best AAA open world game I have ever see. 10/10 masterpiece. That was my job application for to IGN.

Games like FC3 and 4 were amazing because the civilians made it a different game right, I mean, they were such a core component to immersion with their many varied actions that I couldn't comprehend an open world game approach without them. Sure MGS5 doesn't have that "living n breathing world" of Witcher3 or GTA5, but it's a meticulously designed sand box game that provides %100 play ground with %100 freedom of choice that cannot be find in any other game plus it is equipped with some of the most intelligent AI in the industry. MGS5 for me is an open world game to fully melt into it's gameplay, not a one filled with icons and NPC's to get bored with.
i think my only gripe was with Mother Base. It was huge, sprawling and very impressive, but with the exception of patrolling soldiers, it was practically deserted. No activity. The buildings were just window dressing. They could have taken the XCOM approach and let you walk around inside the buildings and see the people you've recruited going about various tasks.
+SoulPanda I've only seen about 3 different animals, the random trucks that are easily avoidable or just a liability, and being forced to walk past repetitive outpost that serve no purpose other than avoiding or taking over (which serves no purpose since guards will respawn) make the world feel empty or dead.

I can tell about half the people in the comments haven't played the game. The world doesn't feel lived in? Oh wow it's almost like it's *a war zone in a desolate desert huh?* How do I know they have't played the game? In mission 2, Ocelot explains that the PF's and Soviets have occupied the people's homes. *And either way why would people stay in a warzone?* It'd almost be logical if the people had decided to flee from their homes. AI is stupid, yeah, that's true. For the first few levels in the game. People are expecting super advanced AI from the get go. MGSV is easing you into it, slowly cranking up the difficulty, you don't start friggin Super Mario at Bowsers castle. You start at level 1-1. Of course, if you stuck around you would have learned that the guards start to get better eye sight and begin to shoot down your fultons more often, and start to notice more signs of you, and begin to get more cautious of your actions. *I.E. They start calling in things like if you throw a magazine too many times.* But hey, miss out on this great game, i've put 70 hours into it and not even halfway done with it, and i'm not stopping there.
MGSV Does not deserve a 10/10 Rating. Empty open world, 3 Bosses, plot holes, and cut content Every MGS Game had around 4-7 Bosses, but the 3 bosses were Quiet who can be taken out in less than a minute, the skulls from Metallic Archea, and Sahelanthropus. Hell, the final boss was cut out from the game. And no Skull Face battle (WHO WAS THE MAIN VILLIAN OF THE GAME). And Chapter 2 is empty, you have 20 missions, 10 of which are old missions with harder difficulties, and only 5 of those other 10 are important to the plot. The open world is just you riding on a horse for 5 minutes hoping to find a base. I rather have a non opened world game with the lenght of MGS4 (With less cutscenes and more gameplay) and play as Solidus instead of some lame ass nobody. 7/10 at best. I have to say Im disapointed in this year for video games. Its ashame because I was hyped for this game. Hopefully Fallout 4 will be good.
Sisco Bueno Yes but you dont need to fight them to progress the story. And you cant fulton them until you beat Metallic Archea. Also you can just snipe Eli with the tranq rifle and you wont even have to fight him

its only repetitive to those who don't try anything new. you can infiltrate a base any way you choose. if it's repetitive that just means you're repeating the same shit you already did. just one mission alone has a myriad of ways to complete it. If it's repetitive, change your style up, get your skills up, and try something new.
+Meh Skyrim had towns and cities with life and motivated you to visit every landmark. Mgsv forces you to walk around a desert and makes you take roads rather than exploring on your own but why would you since its the same brown environment with repetitive outpost and almost no life at all.
People complain that the open world feels empty in MGSV and Witcher 3... People complain the open world has too much fluff in Batman or Mad Max... It's hilarious, and at the same time a bit maddening, to hear one side bash the other instead of appreciating the beauty in the differences.
love Metal Gear but the biggest issue for me so far is that all the missions are almost the same, extract this soldier, extract this prisoner, rinse and repeat and its usually in areas you were already in. im having a blast with it so far but hopefully later missions vary a little more
+MistahBroccoli this is my first Metal Gear and I agree kind of. But I have to admit, even though a lot of these missions are generic and I have no care for the people i'm saving, the situations and stealth mechanics make me feel like a badass.
VoidX i don't think this game is bad by any means. Like I said, it's a lot of fun. I'd give it a 9/10 though. I'm really curious to see who gets GOTY this year. Witcher 3 is my personal favorite so far, but we'll see. There's still a lot of games coming out before the year ends
One simple reason why it gets open-world gameplay right: Its still open world even when you begin a mission. Meanwhile in something like GTA V, the game turns practically linear the moment you start a mission.

Freedom? Big? This game is tiny compared to others open worlds, not to mention you cannot traverse any of the mountains, so you are stuck to the roads, with annoying repetitive outposts every 5 min. Also, there are zero towns with civilians or towns at all....and there is no water to swim in and hardly and vehicles, not to mention the game is a cutscene simulator.
how to make a 10/10 game......... OPTIONS! people want to play with options, the options to go here....or there...use this item this way or that way...tackle a situation this way or that way...fight an enemy this way of that way...metal gear V is doing this near flawlessly and that's why the reviews and opinions are so damn good.
dont forget the story, hidden cutscenes, colecting music tapes, collecting tapes which reveal more of the story, side ops such as hunting bears, finding your wandering soldiers, finding hidden valuable plants, blueprints for more weapons. LOL, there is not that much unused space. There is always something to find and do.
MGSV's open world is fantastic. I love how they set up the side missions,where you can just select them from the start and dive right in,compared to traveling to a certain point on the map just to start them. I'd love to see Rockstar use this approach with their next GTA game.
I don’t think the world was supposed to be fillies with civilians it would honestly change the game. I feel like it’s more of a mechanics type game where you are open to do anything you like which some people misinterpret and just go guns blazing.
MGS V TPP is not an open world in the sense of a living, breathing self sufficient city/area like GTA/Watch Dogs/AC but more of a place to play the various main and side ops. I'd say its less populated and dense than something like FC 4. This is not a game to experience an "open world" but to experience wide open (as opposed to corridor) stealth gameplay with an impressive arsenal of options, and a very well developed sense of progression with mother base and R&D. This is an essential game.
The Open World is horrible. The game is long, yes, but only why the helicopter for no good reason always chooses to have the lz 2-3 miles away from the point where the mission starts. So you spend a lot of time to get to your mission. I also like to mention the very bad map design. The map is small and boring and they put many mountains in it to make it feel big so that you always have to ride for minutes on your horse. The outpost, the controls and all the gadgets are very cool but it´s not a 10/10 not even a 9 imo. The very lame story (especially considering that this is a metal gear game), the pacing, the empty open world and the backtravelling they force you to do in order to finish the game makes it an 8/10 for me. It´s a letdown to me personally. And why recasting David if the new guy says not more than 10 words? They don´t even catch the emotions of the characters well compared to GTA, La Noir, The Witcher and other games. I think last gen consoles hold this game back a lot.
I sincerely haven't had so much fun and interest in a game other than skyrim. this game has shaken up my emotions and driven me to play more and more hours. its funny but the first day I bought this game, I literally couldn't let go of the controller. it was too much fun and the way you can do missions is so fun and creative. congrats to Hideo Kojima for this GOTY. Truly an honor to play
What in the world are you talking about? MGS 5 is an open world game? MGS5 is non-linear game but addressing as an open world is just delusional. Open world games have one thing in common: one big giant structure/map where players have the freedom to get to where ever they want and when ever they want. Usually we can choose how we can get anywhere in the map (boat, car, running, swimming, flying, etc). MGS5 restricts this access obscuring the fact that there are multiple quite large levels/maps which construct the its world. Or... it has one giant map but in order to get to one location from another we can only use helicopter. It act as the portal connecting levels despite of how good it gives the illusion of one giant world. I don't know why people agree to this "open world" status given to MGS5 simply because it announced as open world? Wth man? Almost like people are that dumb or simply too happy about the game even got released in the first place? Its a great game. A masterpiece. 10 of 10. Yes, I agree. But it's not an open world.
This is a great game.I have loved every minute that I have spent playing and there is plenty to do trust me..I feel like I have sunk hours and hours of gameplay but only at like 9%.Contender for Game of the Year for sure.
It's not about the open world being living and breathing. The important thing is that the resource management makes it so that every little thing on the map is actually important.
Guys I have just watched you talk about the open world for over 10 minutes and I still have no idea why this is meant to be the best open world game. I learnt more from the 2 sentence comments below than I have from this entire video. :/
MGSV is OK, can be fun. But kinda overrated. Not even close to the 10/10 some reviewers tend to give this game. I would say 8/10 is fair. For me (I'm PC Gamer) two releases this year were better in every way: Witcher 3 and GTA 5. Both were 9/10...
Sick of IGN blowing smoke up Kojima's arse. This world isn't anything special at all, been done bigger and better in many games. Far Cry 3, 4 and GTA 5 is a million times better. If this was any other game IGN would be giving it a 7/10.
For a first time open world game it was ok and the AI and multilayered gameplay and insanely stealth were the highlights. But for first time open world makers this year Horizon Zero Dawn did it way better and life like despite first try. But in all fairness these were war torn countries with militias filling the town's which in real life means people flee it's basically empty besides soldiers in some areas in Afghanistan and Africa so that actually justifies it even if they used that just to avoid making lively towns.
The only complaint i have with its open world is that There isnt enough cracks on rocks to help with verticality "Theres countless times i haven't been Able to get over a rock thats clearly jumpable "
For me, the open world is okay, but not the best. Of course some trucks past by a few days, quite a number of outposts. What would have been cool, is that there would be random things happening like wars just started while you are driving. A lot of space is unused. You can't climb a lot of the mountains, definitely wasted.
I do like how it's the same people in the comments who are trashing this game...we get it, you think it's overhyped, the world is small and empty, and you want us to buy mad max, but seriously just shut up already
Did anyone else get MAD MAX on the release date? This games looks cool but after the Witcher I became aware of too much space not enough content, sure it might not take 15 hours to only complete 5% but the whole game is a insane thrill ride. B4 anyone trols I'm getting this soon anyway
MGS V is absolutely amazing. Once I've beaten it, I'll play mad max. That means I won't be playing mad max for months because MGS V is such a long game :D
BS, I own this game with some 50+ hours put into it. There is no possible way you could put 15 hours into it any onle have 5% done. After maybe 30 hours I was 25% done and all I did was the story quests which are the longest % gains possible. And don't say I am rushing through it. I spent a good 2 hours on a single mission just trying to do it as quickly as I could and perfectly without being spotted. The mission in the airport, where you have to assassinate a target who is going to give an arms dealer a tour of said airport? Yeah, spent 2 hours in there trying to move through it perfectly. Ended up just climbing a tower and sniping the target. This game isn't honestly that big. People see that percentage and automatically think "Wow I have only done 25% of everything there is to do in this game over 30 hours? There must be SO MUCH MORE to do!" Thing is, easily like, 70% of the game is side missions. And 90% of those side missions mean nothing and give no story. They are things like 'Go save a prisoner here' or 'eliminate these two enemies here'. The missions are very short, but give the same amount of % towards completion. Plus, they are the same thing over and over and over again. Save x amount of prisoners, eliminate x amount of enemies, and eliminate x amount of vehicles. The game is good, yes. But I'm tired of hearing how massive it is. Most of the missions in this game are far from unique. Some STORY missions even have you do things as simple as walk into a camp guarded by some 7 enemies and rescue 2 prisoners. Took me like 5 minutes to complete that STORY mission, and there are only about 32 story missions.
I give this game a 7/10 so far. It definitely is cool with it's customization and flexibility when doing missions, but..... tune in later when i actually beat the game.
Also 10:01, that's not true. You get a lowered score if you are spotted, so if you go in loud with machine guns and rocket launchers you get a lower score. Same goes for killing people. You get a lower score if you kill anyone on a mission, but can still get an S with killing people. Plus you are penalized permanently for using certain things, such as the parasite uniform which gives you the abiliites like the skulls, or the cloaking device that gives you very brief bursts of invisibility. If you use those things, your score is limited to a maximum of an A and you CANNOT get an S rank on that mission.
+Bell Idrael It's not just the score if you kill too many people the shrapnel horn in ya head grows and you eventually get covered in blood that wont wash off...oh yeah and you leave bloody footprints the guards can follow.

atlaspressed it doesn't have to be a "talking simulator" to be a living open world. This is a video game; they don't have to make it EXACTLY like real Afghanistan, I mean at least add something interesting to the world like lush forests, ponds, lakes whatever. Developers are supposed to be creative. And this game is the opposite of having "choice". It forces you to use the roads and nowhere else, and doesn't let you climb mountains or anything.

They mentioned it in the video. But I'm so glad MGS5 doesn't drag down your score for killing, you'll get a penalty by not getting 5000points for a kill free mission. But don't get spotted and you will still get an A or S rank.
I'm not saying it's a bad game I'm just saying they act like cuz they gave it a 10/10 that should be evidence for people to get it (which they should anyway)

Okay, I'll preface this by saying I really enjoy the gameplay, but it gets just as samey and repetitive as any other open world game if you play too long without shaking it up; it really doesn't do much most open world games don't do; it just doesn't have a billion icons and side stuff that seems barely related to the main game you're playing. If you do two dozen missions back to back they blend into themselves just as much, if not more, than most games.
The game is amazing. But I will say I was a tad bit disappointed in the fact that there are only two areas of exploration. If we had just one more environment to explore I think it would be perfect. I've yet to to find a flaw in the game. I think its deserving of the 10/10
Never played an MGS game, but am very interested in this one. Specially open world games, that allow you to do other miscellaneous stuff rather than just plan poin to point objectives. Anyways, Quick question!! Should I buy this or perhaps they will release a complete edition set? That's if it's worth playing from the beginning.
I loved this game but it was little disappointing to know that this game was released incomplete! They dint plan to release it with only 31 missions. All redundant "extreme" missions you get are for filling the gap.
I wish metal gear would have been a semi open world, linear path, but multiple ways to complete it. Ive played for 15 hours and im already tired of running around the map doing almost nothing.
The empty spaces between bases and outposts sort of remind me of the playable loading screen roads in between levels in Tony Hawk's American Wasteland. Sure it's pretty, but in all honesty it's just a load of roads.
Can someone confirm this with me, I've not bought mgs 5 because I'm worried about something. From what I've seen, yes, it's a great open world game, but is there still a story or it's just gonna be just like doing missions again and again without a proper story telling. Ummm how about talk about the AI and how you can run pretty much right in front of them yet they won't see you? Also how the AI reacts after you tranq them, they get up as though nothing happened.
I was watching a gameplay of MGS V where the player was tranquilizing 6-7 guards in an open area ,one by one enemies were going to sleep and only the last one tried to defend. Blacklist certainly has good AI.You have to play in realistic and perfectionist difficulty to feel it.
It’s not open world whatsoever. There are levels and you can’t return to them. Also the cinematics drag on for way too long. And if you log out you lose hours of progress.
i think metal gear is a solid 9.5/10, it is pretty bland and dull and the story is kinda well bland and dull, The A.I is extremely easy to sneak around but the way they adapt to your playing style makes this game extremely fun, the side ops help you to be more immersed in the game...the mission are VERY repetitive but you seem to want to get more story so you play through it with no problem. there are very odd missions in the game such as traitor caravan, and the virus mission that seems like massive trolls and causes your hard work to be punished. with the exception of the skulls this game is VERY easy. Most characters are very memorable and make you care for them but the lack of story gives you a feeling of wanting more. the smarter and more strategic you play this game the funner it gets. setting charges on communication antennas and only setting them off when you have the target ready for extraction makes this game WAY funner when you see it actually causes a great distraction. the game play is amazing but the story is lacking, You'll catch yourself extracting more people, going out your way to catch that "A" ranked soldier, capturing animals to build your zoo, hunting down translators, and building a better home base/ upgrading more weapons....rather than actually playing the story. ...........now personally i like the witcher 3 alot more, the witcher side missions seemed like regular missions, you actually saw an impact on the world, the world seemed more varied with hidden stuff laying all over, i easilly spend 100 (ok really 200+ hours) playing the witcher 3 but these 2 games are ONLY alike for their open world similarities its hard to compare the two.
I'm a huge Metal Gear Solid fan, but playing The Phantom Pain for long hours can get REALLY boring to me (especially side ops). Where else in The Witcher 3, I've never got bored once because the exploration and music is so immersive; and it's my first-time with the series. Guess my expectations were too high for MGSV after the Witcher. 😕
