Mexico's grand strategy is never threaten or annoy the US, do enough to handle Guatemala, and have a big enough force to deal with domestic threats. What they don't want is any individual force capable of mounting a coup so all of this mitigates against more sophisticated equipment.

True except for the coup part. Modern Mexico has typically had a non political military (aside from their south and central American brothers) and that's the main reason you haven't seen a coup in modern Mexico. That's also why AMLOS guardia nacional, and tren maya and Aero Mexico projects have been controversial as well, because people feel that it is bringing the military into the politico sphere of Mexico. (Personally I'm pro tren maya and pro GN) But there is an argument there, that it brings Mexico's military away from it's historical political neutrality

@@CarlosAlberto-sm4fy it helps that cartels aren't as eager to use IEDs as the Middle-East was, though. They're as mobile-active as the military with their armored pickups, so they'd only end up killing themselves with roadside explosive. Also, while they shoot it out with civilians and military in ambushes, they aren't capable of using heavy artillery and mortars the way Taliban and other ME groups have been known to be. Imagine the statistics for the Army and USMC if they never had to worry about IEDs or artillery from ISIS and Al-Qaeda. Just semi-traditional mountain and open field warfare. I think there is a lot of mystification surrounding the cartels. They don’t maintain anything resembling a military, for example. They don’t even qualify as an insurgency. They are criminal gangs and organized as such. In some cases they are well armed and they are well funded, thanks to America’s demand for drugs. That said, their capabilities seem to be magnified in the minds of some paranoid Americans. They’re a criminal threat, not a military one. They lack the organization to become a military threat. The Mexican nominal GDP is just behind Russia. Its PPP is above South Korea and Italy. Its economy is far larger than Egypts (Mexican nominal GDP is 5x larger while having only a slightly larger population) which is armed to the teeth. If Mexico wanted to arm itself it certainly has the economy to do so. Mexico doesn’t have any fancy equipment because it otherwise doesn’t need them. Any country large enough to threaten Mexico would automatically have to contend with the US. The way I see it is that Mexico sees no reason to have an overbloated military. I mean we can poke fun at their equipment but they also aren’t 30 trillion dollars in debt. Eventually the US dollar will be worthless and we can kiss having 2000 5th generation fighters, 11 aircraft carriers, and 11,000 humvees goodbye. Last point. Mexican army doesn´t have any tanks cause Mexico´s terrain is not suitable for tank warfare. It´s too mountanious. Light armour and recon works better in the steep sierras and it also works for fighting guerrilla warfare in case of a big invasion.

Wow! This is fascinating. Thank you for making and posting this video. I’m an American retired and living in Mexico. The sight of soldiers is common, but I’ve never personally seen an armored fighting vehicle. I guess I can research this myself, but I’d certainly like to know more about Mexico’s ministry of defense’s doctrines. What is the stated purpose of the military? Against what threats are the armed forces defending? Obviously, whether it’s formally stated, they are there to defend against internal threats. I don’t think they have any worries wrt to either of their next door neighbors. Wrt published tank doctrine, I doubt that the military will procure tanks in the near future, given which party was elected in the most recent election. Anyway, this video has opened up an entirely new interest for me. Thank you for posting it! I’m curious about how Mexico’s Marines and National Guard are equipped and organized. I’m also interested to know the history of Mexico’s armored development. I imagine it goes back to the Mexican Revolution, 1910-1920.

AMX-13’s never fight cartels anyway. You’re right with its armor rating it would more or less just be a big target. IFVs and SSR cammo skin Chevrolet’s carry the fight against cartels. They do pretty well from what I hear.

@@crowe6961 I don't think the Mexican Army has that many anti-material rifles, but in any case, those weapons can be bought legally with no more restrictions than any bolt rifle and then simply smuggled back via the same routes that bring in narcotics. Hell, the "wholesale" smugglers can probably demand payment from their last mile local retailers or even final clients partly in weapons, so the purchases can be carried out by US Citizens without any problems.

I find it strange, on one hand up until the Cartels started getting weapons stolen from Ukraine they were mostly just small arms, so even these older vehicles were more than enough to deal with he major threat in Mexico. I just do see a reason to do huge modernization efforts if the weapons your dealing with haven't really changed, I mean, multimillion dollar very modern MBTs are being knocked out in Ukraine with 300$ FPV drones and an RPG 7 warhead which is 1961 tech.

This video fails to mentions that every non-US and french vehicle is made by Mexico, meaning in a major war they have capacityto expand production and not get stagnated by trying to desperately get imports. The FX-05 is also a good start for domestic small arms but in that regard I think the country is never gonna really run out of small arms and ammunition is secured too as Águila ammunition is a mexican company. The biggest issue I see is the precurement of support weapons, more than tanks the country needs national production of artillery pieces, even if it's WW2-tier artillery or self-propelled howitzers we have learned from Ukraine than any artillery is useful and the enemy in terror won't be asking himself if he is getting shelled by old technology or the newest fanciest 155mm rocket-boosted shell from the germans.
