@@TheActionLab well at a greater distance u would have to use a device to convert the frequency or it would sound nothing like a voice at all. Because the frequency of the laser touching the microphone will slow down if u increase the distance, I think if u would have a smaller diameter laser and place it closer to the source that vibrates it would sound more like an actual voice. Or I could be wrong 😉😁

Strangest is when they're talking through the house cracks and creaks. I've even heard where radio operators are aware of methods they won't typically disclosed and can use multiple stations to triangulate on a victims house nails and simultaneously, I guess phase synchronized somehow, beam form to rattle the house and make a target look like they're emitting unlawfully intentionally to make complaints. Weird also is the talking appliances with compressors like the fridge and freezer. I think the clipping may be partly due to the mass of the mirror. It's not vibrating perfectly with the speaker because it takes time to accelerate. What if you connected the microphone directly to the laser rather than bouncing the laser off a mirror. Would an analog signal work as well as a pulse?
@maudiojunky
@maudiojunky 4 года назад
Yeah a PWM laser driver should work a lot better. The microphone itself will act as a low-pass filter to remove the carrier frequency.
@charlieangkor8649
@charlieangkor8649 4 года назад
Or maybe, in our 21st century technological age, he could unlock his smartphone, open a browser, go to www.google.com, type "how to audio modulate a laser pointer", and click the first link and he would get this: "The trick to modulating a laser is to put a 10 ohm resistor in series with the batteries and couple a sound signal across the resistor through a 100 uf capacitor from an 8 ohm audio source." I actually did this with headphone output of my laptop (32 ohm or so) and it was powerful and perfectly undistorted. No need for any PWM.

I have a hypothesis going into this video: Light acts as a wave and a particle. Photons can actually exert a tiny amount of force when they hit something. Pehaps this can be amplified with more photons (ie a laser) and by modulating the beam with a frequency (ie sound) the light can be used as a carrier wave, similar to radio.

It seems like with this method there is no encoding of amplitude, only frequency: amplitude just makes the laser go further away from the mic so is lost information. I think you would need to brighten & dim the laser to vary the amplitude, as well as have it sweeping for frequency. Edit: or pulse width modulation of the amplitude
@SameLif3
@SameLif3 4 года назад
So it wouldn’t work with a invisible laser ?
@TheActionLab
@TheActionLab 4 года назад
That's what I thought at first too. But you can actually change the amplitude as well. I tested this on the frequency sweep by turning the amplitude up and down during it and it definitely changes the volume strength on the final laser audio. I think the reason is because the faster the you pass the laser over the mic, the louder the "pop" sound on the mic when the laser hits it. So, for a given frequency, the laser passes over the mic at a certain speed, so if you increase the amplitude at a given frequency then the laser passes over the mic faster resulting in louder "pops" at that frequency.
@YogirajGutte
@YogirajGutte 4 года назад
@Tim O'ney frequency of the laser doesn't matter much. Only frequency of movement of the beam due to the mirror is generating the sound.
@remesh1226
@remesh1226 4 года назад
@The Action Lab @Holt Westling What if an array of microphones are used along the vibrating path of the laser and the output from all of them are combined together and maybe do a noise filtering?? Also, what if instead of reflecting the laser towards the microphone, if we attach something like a hurdling bar on top of the vibrating speaker and put that system in such a way that the "hurdling bar" thingy vibrates perpendicular to the path of the laser (Like how the leaf of the fan passed through). Would that work in any way!?

Instead of moving the laser up and down, try to map the voice as peaks of current and then send a stable pulsating signal to the laser, which would pulse in the waveform of your voice. (Does that make sense? I really hope that makes sense)
@joeledwards6587
@joeledwards6587 4 года назад
Yup, that's kinda what I was here to say. Don't quite know the technicalities of it, but I bet the problem with this setup is in fact the vibrations, because that moves the laser off the mic. Maybe a lense could focus the distortions into the mic? Maybe it would set the mic on fire. Lol

Sir, really really nice video, I had never expected that ever could be possible. Your engaging video, just got me out with a suggestion and some doubts. Suggestion: The reason for your sound to not transmit fully, would be due to the phenomenon of scattering of light by the air molecules in the path. Doubt: 1. Does this also happens when your receiver is in vacuum and no other (air) medium is around it than just vacuum. 2. As you suggested that sound creates when you disturb the moment or travel of light rays, then why their is sound when no one is disturbing the light, and it is traveling straight to the receiver. The doubt came from curiosity, and if you feel free, please reply.

You could also connect the laser diode to an amplifier, and transmit sound like that. What's interesting (and very dangerous) is that since the microphone reacts to the energy transmitted by the laser (you discussed why this worked), it doesn't have to be visible light. You could get an IR laser to mess with someone's Alexa. The transmitted signal would probably be a lot better than what you were able to achieve.

I saw this neat video once where a group recorded pictures of a piece of aluminum. The aluminum moved with the person talking, and they were able to turn those pictures into sound

You can transmit the sound using laser by adjusting the gain of the laser according to the sound pulses - maybe it should work

Here are some ideas: Put in front of the laser, a semi-transparent layer that increases transparency from one side to the other, and make it vibrate in a movement parallel to the axis of transparency change. Or put two polarisers in front of the laser, and make something to convert the linear movement of the vibrator to rotational movement of one of the polarisers.

That's awesome. Now put the microphone inside the vacuum chamber. Also maybe you can focus the vibrating light back into a tiny area using a lens? So the mic would catch it all?
