How has minimalism impacted your life?
@lindaauld9752
@lindaauld9752 3 года назад
It changed me completely . I moved in with partner (husband now) and because we both had stuff it was a lot of stuff!! I started clearing and getting rid before I even knew the word minimalism!!! The Minimilists movie was a turn around for me and I became so much more aware of what I brought into my home . It’s been a long process, and took a long time to get to where I am today.

Also, many of the Minimilists on RU-vid is young families , I don’t have toys to worry about , so I cannot relate to them as much!!

I am new to this. I started with my bedroom, which because of our space limitations, also doubles as my home office. You can imagine the conflicting vibes, right? Also I had to work on my sleep habits. I started with getting rid of as much light as possible and buying an analog alarm clock. MUCH improved sleep and helps me get up early to run and meditate. I started making my bed every day and I love how that looks. I began to appreciate my octopus comforter more when it was nicely laid out. This thing I have had for years, I never really noticed how much I love it until I started making my bed. Then I just looked at all the clutter on the surfaces of my desk and nightstand and asked myself, "Does this have to be here? Do I need it? And if so, could it go somewhere else?" For example my desktop office supply organizer... I really only need the scissors and two pens. Would it kill me to open my file cabinet drawer every time I need scissors or a pen? Turns out I don't really need that organizer at all. Or the coat rack I just got rid of when I realized there were only three purses that could go elsewhere. Once I opened up my bedroom space, I got a plant to live there. I love the plant! I'm so pleased with the space that now I just sit and stare at it peacefully. It relaxes me both when I'm going to bed and when I'm working. And that is the effect of transforming just my side of the bedroom. I am so excited to work on the rest of the house.

I love this, thanks for sharing! That's awesome how you had a first win, and then kept on making changes because you experienced more peace and calm. It reminds me of Fumio Sasaki's "Silent To-Do List." It's this idea that our stuff takes on a personality and wants to be taken care off. And it lets us know, these messages make up that silent to-do list. Now that you've reorganized everything, everything looks clean and organized, with less of these messages coming your way. I can see how you would want to work on the rest of the house now, too! PS. I did a separate video on the Silent To-Do List, you might be interested in checking that out: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Zt7pjXOyBaw.html

Hi Peter! I was amused when you had your dishes and other things talking to you! I was always a minimalist! Having children some how changed that! Now they are all grown up, and I had slowly been working on stuff to declutter. I have come a long way! I have to declutter their art, crafts, and schoolwork! This will be difficult! So far one med. size bin for them all, plus one child did more art, so maybe five bins to go through! My Grandmother was minimal! I too was! It is really a great freedom feeling! Sometimes I feel it is my only hobby/ interest! Well nature and the Creator also! Have fun with the concept, Peter!

Granted, minimalism is easier to implement when you don't have kids. But there are YT channels that focus on minimalism and families, such as 'The Minimal Mom' (ru-vid.comvideos). Joshua Becker (ru-vid.comvideos) also has a number of videos focusing specifically on minimalism and family life. Maybe you find some inspiration there!

This was very interesting Peter. I wasn’t familiar with the concept of the silent to-do list, but i am very familiar with the feeling. Minimalism for me has been a journey of doing less - and being ok with not doing anything for a while. And if I’m being 100% honest: reducing the amount of kitchen tools I own wouldn’t be a bad thing either.

Just found your channel.great content! You are so right about the silent to do list! I can't say that I am a minimalist (yet) but I started decluttering after reading Mari Kondo' s book. During the long lockdown in my country this year I realized that my space is so much calmer and clean because of the decluttering last summer. So now I am starting a second round of decluttering more stuff. I want my house to be a place that gives me calmness and comfort. Love your couch! Looks comfortable and airy!(if there is such a word) Thanks for sharing your journey with us.

Hi, thanks for the great video. I find myself gathering small things in the shop I work at. I work in a charity shop so I often but things there that are very cheap. Do you have methods to stop bring home things? I have removed many things over the last few years and this job is new and I have gathered things every week for the last 2 months. Thanks for reading my comment.
@IAmPeterCook
@IAmPeterCook 3 года назад
Hi Karol, thanks for your comment 😊. I can imagine how you slowly accumulate things this way, one at a time. Until one day your house is full of stuff and you're like, how did I get here? A good place to start might be the ‘One In, One Out’ rule. This basically means that for each item you want to introduce into your living space, a similar item has to go. If you are struggling with this, it might be helpful to view all items in your house as having a personality. They all have their own little wants and needs. And the more stuff you have around you, the more messages you will get. It’s a concept called the Silent To-Do List, I did a full video on this: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Zt7pjXOyBaw.html. Hope this helps!

@@IAmPeterCook Thanks for responding to my comment so quickly. That is great advice, I am ware with the silent to do list from that book, I think it is called own less stuff. I love minimalists books. I will regular clear outs and one in one out methods, I am committed to owning less. I did the Marie Kondu method a few years ago and I was really amazed at the transformation. I could not beleave how freeing it was to remove things and I have been cutting down for a few years, it is just since I started this job that things have started to grow and I did'nt know what to do. Thank you for this wonderful suggestion and for this lovely video. I subscribed and I wish you luck with your channel. It can be hard to get subscribers as a small channel, I have always struggled with mine but I make videos anyway. Thanks again and best of luck. I will definitely watch more videos.

My observation is minimalism along with somewhat good social life works is the best recipe. But you're scaled down and isolated and tend to become minimalist within a short span of time you may end up feeling lonesome and depressed. Just my own personal observation. May not be the thing in everyone's case.
@IAmPeterCook
@IAmPeterCook 3 года назад
That's an interesting observation. First thought I have is that minimalism can also be helpful in assessing your social life. For example checking in with yourself how many people you socialize with. If that's a big number, perhaps cutting down on your social obligations with some people can create time to deepen the relationship with people closed to you.
@tree2812
@tree2812 3 года назад
In other words I was actually saying that it can be real hard for an ambivert to go absolute minimalist within a short span. Less furniture, empty rooms lead to a sense of emptiness in general and if you're not having social connections at all, the transition is a bit rough. I think one needs to be to some extent prepared for the byproducts of minimalism beforehand.

Hallo Peter. I watched tons of video's on RU-vid on minimalism as I really like to change my lifestyle and spending habits, but all it gave me was overwhelming stress because they all seem so fanatic, pushing to become another picture perfect in a different jacket. And this the first time I finally understand the concept and most importantly why its good. Thank you!
@IAmPeterCook
@IAmPeterCook Год назад
Hi, happy to hear it! I was there once myself. There's no one-size-fits-all mold when it comes to minimalism, or any lifestyle really. I think it's helpful to keep in mind that extreme videos do better on social media, so some extreme minimalism video will likely get more views and then paint a distorted picture of what minimalism is for most people. Extreme minimalism is not for everyone, it's not for me. Yet I still get a lot of value from implementing minimalist principles in my life, and so can you. I made a video about it recently called How People Get Minimalism WRONG: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ilqaBieLXco.html. You might find it helpful, I go over the different definitions of minimalism that I've found, and - spoiler alert - none said that you need to downsize to a set amount of possessions 😉. Take care!

Nice video, thanks. I see a lot of videos about people who do minimalist and found myself getting annoyed by some other videos where people's houses don't look minimalist to me, but really, I don't care, I just wanna personally see more extreme examples. I just need a better way to filter out the videos. I respect anybody's goals about minimalism even if they differ than me. I have less desire for things than most people but I'm also not set up for guests. I don't mind renting a furnished apartment with more things than I need if the price is right.
@IAmPeterCook
@IAmPeterCook 3 года назад
Thanks for the thoughtful comment, Joe. I hear you, I've struggled with this myself as well. I'm often impressed with seeing videos of people who have completely cleaned out their living space and now only own the bare minimum. Part of me wants to go full on minimal and have an practically empty space to live in. But it's not always practical. If you're in a relationship, for example, you've got to find a middle ground. I have decluttered a lot of stuff, but I do still own things, as you can see in the video. To me, minimalism is ultimately a mindset. It's about eliminating distractions, so you can focus on the things that are truly important. And that goes beyond decluttering your things. It also affects how you relate to other people, the content you consume, etc. Hope you find what you're looking for!
