@@nathansmith62 Yes true 4 Strokes has really changed throughout the years when it comes to perfomance in the meanwhile nothing special happened for 2 Strokes😢
Sled HQ yeah I know, they’re just not mass produced like 4 strokes bc of emissions and everything and the way the sport is moving. It was more of a joke, I didn’t think anyone would actually read my comment lol. I just love my kx250 💕🤣
@@Donut Yes and I (for a short time)was racing a BSA Victor and I was only 5'2" and 105 lbs. It was a lot of work. I have a few pictures. This one was like it. www.classic-british-motorcycles.com/1973-bsa-b50mx.html Mike
Yet firing riders who got down, invented FMX There was a MASSIVE controvasy when Deegan ghosted his bike after a race finish.McGrath ripping a Nac Nac was unheard of back in the day!
Dude seriously. I just remember (and you can always rewatch) just how it almost seemed silent when Pastrana was in the air and just the eruption of cheer from the crowd as he landed. I remember jumping out of my seat st home because of how crazy it was seeing that live
@@metricstormtrooper you do know the term is "Freestyle Motocross" right... also this video is about all forms of motocross as a whole so yeah freestyle has had a gigantic role to play.
Back in 2006, on the first day of school, I wore a fox jersey and I was the only kid for the entire year that dressed like that. It was like that for years after and now seeing brands like fox and others in the motocross scene make a comeback, makes me smile.
Thank you so much for this video. Being born in 1995 in a rural Ohio town I absolutely wore moto jerseys to school, went to local freestyle events and races, watched constant XGames... Except I was the only one of my whole friend group who was into it. Seeing this video gave me so much more childhood validation.
I feel Nolan's vibe, I grew up in SoCal in the early 2000s when all this was happening. FMX/MX all encompassing, as well as skating, listening to Nu Metal, rockin my Fox gear for Halloween because I could, endless hours of playing Freekstyle with my siblings, and being stoked whenever it was time for the X-Games. Never did get a proper dirtbike, but my dad and I rode our Kawasaki quads through the Coachella valley whenever we could. Those were the days, hella nostalgia.
The downfall of motocross is when they took away the two strokes... has nothing to do with emissions it's about part sales, the manufacturers make more money on four strokes over all. Back in the mid 80s everybody had a brand new bike, the average racer could get two seasons out of one with minimal maintenance. chain sprocket, top end kit, tires, clutch plates.. the more serious racer got a new one every year for the next 8 or 10 years as it went, or could actually afford to have two bikes.. a practice bike and race machine... I remember buying a brand new KX 125 in 1984 for $1,795 glory days are over.......R.I.P Marty Smith
While it's true that the early four strokes we're garbage and might have lead to many people quitting the sport, the current ones are actually (usually) really reliable and relatively inexpensive to maintain. I had a 2013 Kawasaki kx450f for like 4-5 years and rode it up to 120 hours until I did a top end rebuild, (basically the piston, rings, cam chain and gaskets) which cost me about 400-500€. Compare that to changing a piston, rings, bearing and gaskets on a 125cc every 20-30 hours for about 100-150€ and the costs aren't that different anymore. According to this calculator: www.officialdata.org/us/inflation/1984?amount=1795 the inflation adjusted value of 1795$ would be about 4500$, which admittedly is much less than the 8000-9000$ new bikes cost nowadays. But then again the tech, like suspension and EFI have *slightly* improved the way the bikes perform as well. Not to mention the fact that four strokes are stupidly easy to ride fast. A bit slower in tight corners, but coming out they just pull. The biggest thing here in Finland that is making people quit are the insurance prices. When I started riding in 2004, insurance for a motocross bike was about 80-120€/year, but due to some legislative changes where mx bikes can now be handled as their own group instead of pooling them together with all vehicles in the country, the prices have risen to about 1500-6000€ per year.
Agreed... at the introduction of the four-stroke they were really pretty Junkie and unreliable... they have definitely come a long way and has made for some exciting racing at the top level... That still doesn't change the fact that the local turnouts are very small and not nearly as exciting as the 2-stroke day's... on my previous comment, I wasn't saying that the sport was totally dead I guess just different in a lot of ways still pretty alive in so many aspects... I'm personally just glad to see that Yamaha, KTM and some others still make great 2 Strokes... lastly, I'm currently looking into getting a yz450f to convert to Supermoto... Have fun stay safe.
Still have pristine copies of midnight club 3 DUB edition: Remix on PS2, as well as MX vs ATV: UNLEASHED on PS2. Both are secondary copies that I bought after a little bit of owning the game for the sole purpose of hiding them away in a safe place never to be touched. Those were and are my all-time games no doubt. Midnight being #1, MX being #2. And I knew from experience that any game that is there to be played will get broken or damaged at somepoint, so I secretly bought them and kept them safe to this day. They are my prized possessions, and I don't see that changing.
I knew Carey Hart as a kid back in Vegas right around the time he almost died during warm ups for a race. Always had a ton of respect for him when he went right back at it and did what he did with his career. Takes big ones to do that.
I don’t usually comment on videos but I have to say that motorcross riding and watching these freestylers kill it alongside Supercross on Saturday nights was the quintessential moment in my life, along with getting my first dirt bike, I loved it so much I slept in the garage with it first night.
Got to see Ricky Carmichael race in his last supercross season at Atlanta. Also got to see him race at the Supercross of Nations at Buds Creek back in 2007. Sadly I think he came down with the flu and wasn't on his best game, but he still dominated, but didn't dominate as much as Ryan Villopoto did. RV stunk it up. Got the holeshot both times in his two motos and won both by over a minute I think, including one of which where he fell down. Oh, and he did it on a 250. He won by over a minute on a 250 even in the mixed moto that had the 250s and 450s. That was magical to watch live.
Bro nobody could get through the whoop sections faster, he came out of nowhere on guys multiple seconds ahead of him because of how good he was in the technical stuff when he was on kawi
Chad Reed just retired this year, after 22 years of racing on the professional level. Most of the riders out there are only 17-19, dude was literally the GOAT.
Sucks that his last season was during covid with no fans. This was supposed to be more of a fan service tour like with what Richard Petty did his last year in NASCAR. Speaking of which, it also sucks for Jimmy Johnson in NASCAR who went through the same thing. His retirement tour ended with the majority of races having no fans, and him missing the playoffs.
That time in history was incredible for all sports. Jordan, Rodman, Barkley, Farve, Montana, Woods, Gretzky, Gardner, Rice, even bowling and pro fishing was huge. Every sport had superstars. The list of names is endless. My small town won the state Bball title for all schools regardless of size, the next town over had several "Mr Basketball" winners, our colleges won national championships. Sports were amazing from small town to pro teams.
Pretty much the greatest era of motocross/FMX/supercross, James bubba Stewart, RC, Pastrana, Brian the general deegan! Great video donut. So much nostalgia!
When Pastrana hit that double backflip it was absolutely insane. It was all me and my friends in the neighborhood could talk about. It felt like such a special moment as a kid witnessing that.
@Meneer Van dijk Damn. I knew it! I'm gonna call the police xd For real though, the burglars car was seen so there's at least hope that he gets it back.
@Meneer Van dijk I don't know how you can transport a cross bike, 2 bicycles, 2 lawn mowers and tools with a supra and I'm pretty sure that it was a mercedes sprinter van, but I still knew it was you! I'm calling police rn xd
Awesome to see the donut guys branch out and cover something with only 2 wheels. The sport was amazing back in the day and I spent my childhood idolizing Carmichael and Reed. Like Nolan said they really transformed the sport into the insanity it is today. Great piece guys.
Travis Pastrana still drives. He does rally now. He even started the 100 Acre Wood Rally, it's in my hometown of Rolla, Missouri. He actually seems like a really cool guy in person, although a bit uptight.
Yo Nolan!!! This episode was great! I too loved the dirt bike scene and now am living my teenager dream driving a Ducati Hypermotard 950. Thanks for the great entertainment and thanks Donut media! 🙌🏼
When Travis did that 720 he broke his pelvis and stood up after that he seperated his si joint on both sides it was the 3rd known case in medical history to not bleed out and die from that
Look a bit into the urban #bikelife scene ... Meek Mill popularized in Miami and you can see hundreds of them in Miami , Philly , New York and it’s the same bikes but in Urban streets .... So the scene isn’t dead yet guys!!
Modern Nitro Circus makes 00s moto look very different. The stuff that gets done on bikes now is just insane. But that's true for skating and other "extreme" sports too.
Probably one of the coolest (non car) videos y’all have put out , I grew up on the Jeremy McGrath era and you were spot on about fox t shirts and elementary school back then 👍👍👍
YES. I grew up in Cali on dirt bikes and working on old muscle cars with my dad so to have you guys do a video over this topic on this channel is a dream. Congrats on the 4mil and keep up the awesome content!
title should be " How FREESTYLE Motocross became the biggest sport of the early 00s" as they really only covered freestyle. mx isn't just all freestyle. racing came first and will always be bigger than freestyle.
Congrats on 4 mill... you guys had such an influence on the car community and made me the car person I will soon to be when I pick up my first project!
Awesome video! It's crazy to think about the double backflip pastrana did. In Denmark we even talked about it in 4th grade with people who learned the sport because of Pastrana!
This felt like a time warp. It's like I was back in the 7th grade all over again. This was amazing. Maybe the best Donut video I've seen on the channel yet.
My favorite donut episode to date! How awesome of you to do this subject. I was a young man living in SoCal during this whole scene and it shaped my life. Thank you. You have done it justice with this small homage.
Is it me, or are the ads even *more* now? I applaud making that paper, fellas, def do it. But man oh man it's a lot lately. Ah well, least the money keeps the channel going - def my fave car show(s).
Lmao I’m a sophomore in highschool rn and I remember whe I started 3rd grade at this new school and my mom finally got my closet filled with strictly fox t shirts. Anyway I started at this new school and everybody was wearing supreme and I was out here in 2014 stuck in 2007
My fit: red fox shirt with black logo, black volcom shorts that u need a belt to wear, black nike socks, and my ETNIES shoes that I spent way too much time looking for but were totally worth it✌🏻
