Packing a piano is a delicate operation, so its best to leave it to the professionals. Still you should have an idea of whats going on when your moves pack your piano.
I have moved over 9,000 pianos over the last 39 years. I wouldn't let this crew anywhere near a grand piano, of any size! Especially a nice instrument. Foot pedals are known as the lyre (along with the lyre stays), pins are known as hinge pins. The music rack is known as the music desk. A professional mover is not the same animal as a professional piano mover. Rarely do I remove the lid (not "the top", nor the music desk). If you do remove the lid, you have to remove the hinge pin hinges as well as the pins, otherwise you put undue pressure on them causing them to strip the little screws mounted in the cabinet casing of the instrument. . They did do this in the video. A piano that size requires two movers with better (different dollies and a different size piano board). In bad weather, such as snow or mud, a third mover for traction and safety is appropriate. Picking up the full weight of even this small piano is inviting someone to get hurt. Some of them were using their back like a crane as they bent over down low, without bending their knees.
I have similar experience to yours- only it's 41 years now! Mostly Boston, Cambridge, NYC. market area, back when people still bought acoustic pianos. Twelve instruments a day was not at all uncommon. I'm sure you could go on for another three pages, I know I could. In a nutshell that's just about the complete opposite of how it should be done. At least they had the foresight to use a junk piano. You hit the nail on the head regarding injuries too, he must carry workers comp forms with his inventories. Lately I'm more likely to use a crane as I am a little long in the tooth to be humping stairs but strangely (sadly?) I still enjoy it.
@@therealbmh1907I was also very surprised to see this. The removing of lid and music desk is totally unnecessary. The piano is perfectly safe with the lid firmly closed. Attach a suitable cradle that allows for the hinges and the manipulating on that board is dispenced with.
There is a heel on the piano board for a reason, to stop the piano slipping off the board in the event it was not strapped tightly enough AND to enable the movers to tilt and pivot the piano at the end of a ramp. set of steps etc. These movers turned the piano sideways on a sloping ramp risking the dolly shooting out from underneath the piano board resulting in the piano falling, causing damage or injuring the movers - an amateurish mistake. The piano was brought out of the house with the top of the piano board coming out first. The heel end of the piano always leave the premises first in case tilt and pivot are required. When tilting the piano onto the board you also need to take pressure off the other two legs as you don't know if they are secure from the last move. It's a pity it didn't show them moving a larger piano or concert grand. This is not a good example of moving a piano, even one as small as this.
The parts are called the lid, the lyre and the music desk. These are movers who are capable of moving a piano, they are NOT piano movers! They are using inferior equipment. Two "real" piano movers with better dollies can do this safely and quicker too.
1. Put a two pieces of a foam strips about 3" x 5" x 1/4 thick on both ends of the fall board to secure it tight, prevent from rubbing the finishing. 2. Use a support (leg substitute) couple inches longer than a piano leg to hold a piano while you removing first (left) front leg. 3. If you have a piano skid board you don't have to remove a music rack and lid. Just make sure the lead will be outside the skid board while you flipping a piano on its side. 4. The furniture dolly is not suited for moving a pianos. 5. It's a two man job. 6. Always mark legs with a marker: L, R, B. (Left, Right and Back). Also mark a pedal mounting screws, they could be different in length then leg screws. 7. Put all the pedal and leg screws, washers, etc. into the ZIP bag, you never will lose them. 8. It's convenient to put legs into the large suitcase on wheels, use old towels to keep them from rubbing each other, and just roll them in the suitcase. Also you can put pedal brackets, supports and rods into the suitcase, and you never will lose them.
even though you can move a piano in this manner it is not how professional piano movers move a piano . i moved pianos only for 2 yrs and have been a mover for 19 yrs the way being shown can be hazardous especially if this was full grand
Lol. Sometimes people don't want to pay for pro piano movers. I'm a mover. Some people want to try save money. And that's how it goes sometimes. I'm not a piano mover, but I've moved enough of them. No need for people to have them. Lol pianos I mean.
This is the smallest, easiest grand piano I've ever seen. This would take myself and one of my movers 10 minutes flat to bring to the truck. It's much easier, faster and more stable to just skid the piano down the steps. And why doesn't their skid have any strap handles? Also why didn't they just tilt the dolly and skid onto the first lip instead of lifting both ends up like that? What the fuck is going on here, it hurts my soul as a piano mover.
I don't think I would pay $500 for that piano, so old and worn, and the strings and harp look like it probably sounds. That is a lot of care for something worth so little. Maybe for a Yamaha C7 or something, but not that old thing.
