I live in China, and appointments seem more of a suggestion. A lot happens last minute and it drives me nuts, but it would be different if I chose it because it aligns to my values. Kudos to planning a life on your terms!

Missing appointments that wastes other people’s time is selfish. Not setting appointments in the first place is a form of freedom, IMO!

This guy is a genius. Live within close proximity to your neighbours, make friends and do cool stuff with them. The fact this even needs to be talked about is nuts. In Spain or any country around the Mediterranean this is the default way of life.

Spanish here. We consider family and friends a VERY important part of our life, and most of us do not dream of living abroad, maybe for some years. However, the default mode of buying a house, mortgages, etc. is also super strong here. Actually, in Spain, % of owners is much higher than renters when compared to other EU countries.

This is a great way to alienate yourself from people in your social circle, while also ensuring that you never achieve experiences (that you think are) outside your comfort zone which would probably have helped you grow as a person and as a father/wife/son/sister etc. Life does not have to be 100% convenience.

LOL, I actually thought this is a great way for him to create his own personal cult. If you want to be "in" his group, you abide by his rules. If you don't abide by his rules, he ostracizes you and by his example, the rest of the circle will do this same. It's as if he's saying "shame on you for wanting to do something else." Complete control is his aim, not a "great social circle and experience." That social circle and experience is dictated by HIS ideals. You want to go have fun in the mountains on your own? You aren't in the circle. This is why I would never live anywhere with a home owners association either. Control freaks are losers, no matter how much money they have.

@@PulpParadisehe’s not forcing anybody to do anything, he’s just choosing to stay local. I used to try to make it to all the party’s and gatherings, that just led to stress, multiple commitments planned, and really no time for myself. In that way I see what he means but he’s not punishing anyone lol: Metaphors and satire come on! He’s choosing to be the planner, just like when one plans an event for their bday etc. no hard feelings if they can’t make it but they’re gonna miss out on good cake. I agree with your homeowners association statement, those guys have nothing better to do
