I've only been to Japan once and prices were great. It was basically comparable to Salt Lake City sometimes cheaper and rarely more expensive. Beer was one item that was much more expensive though I guess owing to alcohol taxes. Great deals on food in Japan. High quality burgers for good prices and way better prices on Japanese food than in the states of course. Drinks were cheap and plentiful. Great place can't wait to visit again for an extended period.

I think it really depends on the individual and also where you live. Here in Germany there are also places that are really expensive, simply because everyone wants to live there. While more rural places, for example here where I live, you can live really well and cheaply. Even places that are still in the city, but are a "little" more rural, are often a lot cheaper here. Which I find crazy.

This is one of my favorite videos you both have done. It's informative but also so nonchalantly comedic. I laughed so many times at the small things, like handing out the kancho card to mr. eats, the hand movements on the escalator and the "essential every day items" being a figurine. The small details you put into your videos gets me every time and I just appreciate it so much. Nice! I think this video will give people a good sense of what it costs to live here! I just want to add that WHERE you live also makes a difference. I’ve lived in both urban and rural areas in Japan, and is definitely easier to save money in the countryside! Cheap rent, cheap/free local veggies, and less temptation to go out and party. (Unless… you end up taking the train into the city to party every weekend. In which case… 😆)

I recall this much from my last vacation in Japan: eating out at a restaurant I was paying less for 3 people than I would for 2 people back home in the USA. When I budgeted for that trip, I set aside $50 US/day and had more than enough for food and trains (that weren't paid for by my company). We ate out every meal at that time, which is not what you would do if you were living in Japan.

Thank you for helping prove my point about prices in Japan. My friends keep telling me how expensive everything in Japan is. I disagree with them. They persist. I ask them if they ever were in Japan. No. Do they know anyone living in Japan. No. I can answer Yes to each of those. I still have my receipts from Lawsons, Family Mart and Yamazaki to show them. They remain skeptical of someone who actually experienced life in Japan. Today I showed them this video. It seems your video outweighs my photos and videos because now they believe. I loved watching your "day in the life of" vid but paused it once to disagree. You were eating natto. I turned my face away from the screen and just said NO. My friends were like: "You ate eel, squid and octopus but you don't like natto? What is it anyway?". I just.... I mean.... No. Just NO. Gomen.....

I think Japan got that reputation in the 80s, when in comparison to the rest of the world things really were expensive. Most people I've talked to that complain about how expensive it is were stationed there when they were in the military in the 80s. They were surprised to find out that in the 90s Japan's economy didn't do well, and now the rest of the world has surpassed the cost off living in Japan.

My dad went there in 2006 and he came back and told me it was crazy expensive and he spent $50 on a pizza. So when I found out I had an unexpected layover for 24 hours in 2013 in Japan I was scared. But my experience was totally different $35 for a hotel room with a huge beautiful free breakfast in the morning. Ministop (7-11 like store) was cheaper or the same price for everything as it is in America. It definitely felt cheaper over all than America, and I live in a very affordable place in America. But like any country if you are going to places of interest, tourist spots, of course its going to be over priced.

It's not far off the same as the UK. I just worked it out that our pizzas cost around $27......however our pizzas are half the size of yours, so that would be a small American pizza 😅 You couldn't get a nice hotel room here for $35, you could only get a budget room from a budget hotel or maybe a half decent Air B&B if you're lucky

The rent is kind of high considering the size and quality of the apartments (insulation, thin walls, no central heat/cooling). I own a much bigger house on 1/2 acre lot. I pay $650/month. Electricity is also a bit high. I've only had to pay $130 a few times. It's usually around $70 Food prices are pretty much the same. Maybe a little lower there, but we tend to eat more. I don't think most of us would be okay with just a slice of toast for breakfast, for example...

Hey. Thanks for all you do. This is my second time living in Japan. The first time. I got hit by the depression stage really hard and didn’t understand what happened. I had a good enough Job. I’m a teacher by trade/ training. So teaching wasn’t the problem. I was happy. I enjoy travelling and experiencing new things. So. When I got to that really dark place, I didn’t know what hit me. I had to go home for over a year. It was during that gap year that I found your videos. That particular video about the emotional trajectory was super helpful. Coming back, I had more of an understanding of what I was getting into and also a lot more flexibility and choosing power regarding work. It’s only been a few months back and it’s great so far. Let’s see how the rest of the first year goes.

Hello Mrs Eats... Regards from Brazil... Love your channel... I grew up watching Japanese anime and reading manga so that made me create a great interest in japanese culture and your channel is a great way to understand japanese way of life and know more about you guys... Hope some day I can take my family to visit Japan ( specially my 4 yrs old son that dreams to visit the Super Nintendo World and is always asking when we can go lol) and surely your tips will come in handy... Again congrats on the fun content you provide...

food is relativly expsensive in Japan, for reasons like the lack of usable land and the trend for perfection. But the really expensive stuff is for presents, not normal use.

It’s quite expensive and it’s probably not the fruit that you are used to. Most of it just tastes like sugary water, there’re no many nutrients in it.

@@megumilifeinjapan483 Why? Why no nutritional value? Aren't Japan's agricultural aspect very good? Sorry just curious.

Such a fun video! Any place can be expensive if you buy expensive and don't price compare/budget. Also I love that Jotaro figure! I know if I visited Japan it'd be expensive because I'd have an entire suitcase full of Jojo merch lol.

Wow, the total monthly expenses in Japan are less than the rent alone here in America! Where I live, the rent alone, even for a studio apartment, is more than the total monthly expenses that you listed! In fact, that rent rate that you listed was actually quite reasonable. It's actually about what I paid for a three-bedroom townhome when I was in college (the complex was built specifically for college students, so the rent was more affordable than traditional apartments. And if the minimum wage in Japan is 925 yen per hour, and assuming you work 8 hours a day, you'll make more than the daily expenses by almost 3000 yen. Definitely going to move to Japan now if it really is that cheap! And if I look at buying a traditional house instead of renting an apartment, I could be looking at a price tag as low as 2 million to 4 million yen, thus saving even more money!

Osaka! My love ❤ I even have the Osaka mark tattooed on my left forearm (From a tattoo shop in Tennoji). Before the pandemic, I would visit Osaka about 3 times a year to visit my Osaka family and friends. Then, 3 years later, I fell in love with someone there. I miss Osaka so much. In a sea of Tokyo-based RU-vidrs, I've always appreciated that you are both in Osaka!. Seeing the Hankyu line was so nostalgic, as it's the line my fiancé lives near. Also, I'm pretty sure I know exactly which Family Mart that is (Near Grand Front) 😂. Great video as always!

This video is great; it really explains pretty straightforward what I often explain to others regarding living in Japan. It *can* be expensive - but anywhere *can* be. My apartment was cheaper than the US and still big enough, Internet is cheaper... I don't remember paying my water bill directly myself, but that's much better than the $100+/mo I pay here - although I do live in a house and I don't know how much that runs for houses in Japan. And eating out - you can go pricey (and it can be very worth it), but the cheap stuff is often cheaper than, and healthier than, what I see here in the States.

Mrs. Eats makes such funny videos that are also informative at the same time! I could never make a video like her because I would be too nervous about the people walking by thinking "What the heck is that person doing?". Like what everyone has said here in the comments of this video, it really depends where you live in Japan, I want to be an English teacher in Tokyo, Japan, but I am always worrying about where I could live! But when I get to Japan, I want to be just like Mrs. Eats! You are the best Mrs. Eats!!

Mrs. Eats, you are too funny! I love your videos. Mr.Eats has his moments too. I have to have a Kancho shirt. I will be ordering soon. Can't wait to wear it and show people what it means to have a degree from there... By the way, the cost of living there is not that bad. Depending on how you handle it and what you get!
