We’ve also filmed a bunch of others last summer altho it may take me a while to get to editing them. They’ll likely show up as highlight videos in the meantime. We’re trying to get our schedules to match up so we can film Crystal Mill and the others in the area. He’s going to help film on holy cross but that’ll be a stock Jeeps and Broncos video. Looking to get something newer than my WJ (which a previous owner neglected beyond the motor which is a fantastic 4.7L with 243k miles). It’s a money sink to fix up just so I can take the family on some adventures like these. Besides not being able to afford a Gladiator, I do not want a Wrangler and this TH is within the price range. Fantastic video and it’s encouraged me further with it. I’m learning the aftermarket is scarce which is saddening and is why I haven’t fully committed to the TH yet. However, I am a busy body who gets creative. Maybe I’d end up a good supplier for aftermarket modifications 😅 Extra $ is great 🎉

I like the Trailhawk a lot, but it’s reliability suffers with mods. Still, if wheeled stock, it could probably still do most of the trails Sean has done (wheeler excluded). This is at the max of it’s capability. I’m definitely a wrangler guy, but I’m eyeing that Jeep Recon as my next off-roader daily driver (keeping the wrangler and liberty tho). Thanks for watching!

@coloradomallcrawlers Год назад
I’m not sure it is. What’s wrong with the grand Cherokee? I’m a big fan of the grand Cherokee wk2 however I have yet wheel one. The KL is awesome off road, but less towing than the wk2 and I’m not sure which one is more durable. I kinda think a basic grand Trailhawk would be more durable, but I won’t know till I buy one and do durability testing.

I’d probably get a wk2 without air ride because of the extra 2k of towing over the KL… but I’m likely buying a wk2 soon for towing the camper so I’m biased.
@Toycoma
@Toycoma Год назад
@coloradomallcrawlers I ended up with mine because I thought I was going with a much bigger trailer than I ended up with. But now I have a cargo trailer that i semi converted into a camper. It was 1200 pounds empty. It is now at the max 2000. But since the wk2 makes 25 more hp but weighs like what, 1000 pounds more than the cherokee? So I think a Cherokee will be ok to tow my little trailer.

@Frissdas1207
@Frissdas1207 2 года назад
Not lowering your PSI is odd, if this were in Australia you'd be brutalized by local crews. It's considered extremely rude and will enhance the damage you do to the trail. Many of their trails get closed due to abuse of the land so they take it pretty seriously. I personally don't care what you do, I just find it odd.
@coloradomallcrawlers
@coloradomallcrawlers 2 года назад
Let me explain my position. I’ve been off-roading for over 20 years. Lowering your tire pressure use to be only for sand, mud, slick rocks, and when you needed more grip on a trail and I absolutely air down for those conditions. I also work on call 24/7 and film these around my schedule. I have 2 hours once called to get from the trail to work… airing up would put me at risk of being late. Now onto the topic of trail damage, show me a scientific study that proves your point. There isn’t any. From examining video footage, I notice wheeling faster does more damage than staying aired up. I wheel slower when aired up. You also have a wider footprint while aired down on the trail which potentially impacts more of the trail. To simplify, what gives you more grip on obstacles also puts more grip into areas of the trail that don’t warrant it. I’ve also reviewed data from stay the trail and tread lightly, trail saving organizations that I’ve been a member of. Airing down for everything isn’t part of the core principles. I feel some of you use this air down for everything philosophy to justify off-road travel being too harsh for your body and can never provide anything that proves your point. I’m a doctorate level scientist (altho retired from my original career), if someone brings me proof, I’ll change my ways. It’s that simple. Until then, I have my personal data (lots of video footage) and my off-road textbooks. I read a lot of off-road theory books including those from Australians and rarely do I see air down for everything in their books so maybe your pals have watched too many off-road influencers who told you that you needed to air down all the time. I’d recommend picking up some off-road theory books as they’re great!

I absolutely get that… I can’t speak for the Cherokee, but I have wheeled a wrangler for over 20 years. When I was new, I was afraid I’d break it. I started with fire roads, then rockier trails, then even harder trails… I learned Jeeps were tougher than I thought. A well built Jeep or a stock jeep rubicon is built for the toughest trails… if it breaks, it failed and should be covered by warranty (granted you were wheeling appropriately).

Inside windshield cleaning is difficult. You can find various videos and techniques on it but the best seems to be to use something like rubbing alcohol first to thoroughly degrease then move to the cleaners using microfiber towels. Interesting to see what the Cherokee will do but should just buy a Wrangler. I considered a Cherokee and Grand Cherokee but I didn't want to compromise so spent a little more and bought a Wrangler.

Rocky Road for the sliders. He has a 3in lift, but doesn’t recommend his lift. We’re going to make a video explaining his experiences and recommendations soon. I’d probably stick with 2in or stock… the KL is incredibly capable from the factory.

You mentioned that in your opinion a stock Cherokee Trailhawk could do most of the trails here in CO. I am considering a 1-inch lift for my 2021 model to get me 9.7" of clearance. My fear is that if I go too high it will take away from the AWESOME driving experience on paved roads. At the same time I would like a bit more height to be able to tackle tougher trails/spots should I encounter them. Thoughts?
@coloradomallcrawlers
@coloradomallcrawlers 3 года назад
Well, I think the driver matters more than the vehicle but I’m getting a non-wrangler to test that theory. I would not take a stock Trailhawk on Wheeler Lake tho, but I’d say the majority of trails rated as blue in funtreks, absolutely. I would even take it on difficult rated trails like Saints John, however more challenging difficult trails, I’d maybe skip. 8.7in isn’t bad, plus you have skid plates. Sometimes a little scraping on skid plates is better than the stress of increased angles from a lift. Ultimately this will be your decision, but if I had a trailhawk, I’d leave it stock (to maintain warranty) and then see how far I could get it. I think the hardest I would attempt with it would be red cone. Id definitely have upgraded skids (if beneficial), beefy rock rails, and probably a better tire than the stock ones. Hope that helps… I’m a bit exhausted so if it doesn’t make sense, let me know and I’ll revisit it once I have some decent sleep.

@@coloradomallcrawlers Hey thanks for the response man! Hope you have had a chance to catch up on your zzz's:) I appreciate your thoughts very much. We took my jeep over Tin Cup Pass this past weekend (skipped the level 6 rated spur) without any trouble. Just touched a couple times but it wasn't any big deal. That route is rated a 4 or 5 depending on who you talk to I guess, if you bag the spur. Could I have made the spur with my setup do you think? Sounds like it. I am not familiar with funtreks, but used "TrailsOffRoad" and onXoffroad. What does upgraded skids mean exactly? Just additional coverage underneath for exposed parts? Lastly, when you say upgraded tires does that mean bigger as well? Probably not if I don't get a lift. Looks like Red Cone is rated a 7, cool.

Well when I did my 3 inch I took the previous one off. It was a pain in the ass to put on it. With the lift so far I haven't had any issues other than alignment but that remains to be seen down the road. I do have torn rear cv boots ( and have had another jeep owner tell me my fox shocks were the cause because if them forcing the travel ) but I think that it's as much about what I've done with it trail wise that's caused it moreso.
