Colin Firth's reaction to the sight of Katherine and Almásy dancing together was brilliant; observation, recognition, sadness and resignation ... all registered in a couple of seconds. Breathtaking.
I have never seen a man fawned over as much as Ralph in this movie 😅. And I don't think I will ever see another as handsome and in such a movie as this. This movie will stay with me forever, like seeing a beautiful painting by one of the greats
Ralph Fiennes has a remarkably good history of doomed romance in films. It's not just this one, The End of the Affair with Julianne Moore is another stellar movie.
It's not just that they're talented actors. "Chemistry" is there or it isn't; it cannot be artificially created by putting two pretty people together and letting the camera roll. Another breathtaking example of that "chemistry" is the beach scene in From Here to Eternity with Burt Lancaster and Deborah Kerr.
I'm a guy, and I was totally obsessed over this movie when it was released on dvd. I went through a "doomed from the start"- romance in the late 90's and totally connected to theme; falling in love can make you go out of your mind. (Although I'm happy to report that nobody died in our romance.)
Many men can say they had a “Katherine” encounter . Unless they are aware of what they are getting into and are able to keep their wits about them they too can expect to get burned ( hopefully not literally like Almasy )
Relationships like that never do . They are doomed from the start . They are hot passionate and often chaotic and then they abruptly just end as fast as they begin .
That gaze must have won him the role of Voldemort. 😆 Jokes apart, my love for The English Patient had outlived my love for most things and people in my life, ever since I had watched it sometime in 1998 (film released in 1996). The chemistry they had, the passion and the pain, I can always feel them in the same intense way, whenever I had watched it over the last decades. What a beautiful movie! ❤️
I had a terrible time with Almasy, which (probably) means Fiennes did a good job. I had a hard time with their affair because it seemed so remote and odd. Until he found her dead in the cave of swimmers. When I actually wept. His love for her was astronomical.
I saw it in a dollar cinema in November 1997 by myself. Had just graduated college and was working two temporary jobs while looking for a real job. I went late, to a rather obscure part of the large metro area I lived it. It was exquisite. I do enjoy seeing movies with a friend or my husband but seeing them alone - there’s something about it.
@@richardbocanegra5945 Right after watching the movie, I was in such a daze that I read the book super fast (I'm usually a slow reader). Loved it indeed. A beautiful book. Been planning to read it again. It is still in the stack of books beside my bed.
Truth is that her husband was jealous of Almasy since day 1. From the scene they met you can tell heknew Almasy was looking/thinking of Katherine some type of way. Even if he gathered that nothing had happened yet. I mean Colin is a good looking charming dude.....but ralph 😍
His character most likely worked for the British Intelligence (MI6?) which was why he was here. He was actually making maps of northern Africa, simply because he knew war between Germany and England was coming and Northern Africa was going to be an important front.
He was ordered to do so by British Intelligence. I personally think that he brought Katherine along because deep down he knew that had he left her alone in UK she’d done same thing . He knew subconsciously he was never her 1st choice. As he admitted to convincing her to “settle for his shoulder “
@@Aurora-lp9sn Or another theory, he may have thought his wife might sit in it but when she walked on over to the wicker couch he just kind of moved it as to say oh ok and then Maddox sat in it as he walked around the couch etc... Funny how this became a discussion but also interesting as well to point out the little details like this in movies. I noticed them too when I watch movies and always wonder if it's built into the script or if they do it unconscious by habit.
Catherine had that deluded self-confidence that comes with being born into privilege. Everything came easily to her. Almasy was the only person she could not win over. She had to make an actual effort to get beneath his shell. He made her feel truly alive.
A movie that stands the test of time. Brilliant on all counts ….Disappointing fact that the two main protagonists Ralph Fiennes and Kristen Scott Thomas missed out on an Academy Award …. They surely deserved it!!!
glebokie pragnienie od pierwszego spojrzenia, od pierwszego slowa, pierwszego dotyku...💘takie prawdziwe uczucie, milosc pozostaje w sercu na wiecznosc ....
a jealous husband an adventurous wife and a narcissistic lover what an explosive cocktail the ending with the husband plane crush in both of them is so logic passionate love is,always dangerous
"How did you find Cairo?" "I turned left at Gibraltar." (With thanks and a wink to John Lennon, who along with his mates found America by turning left at Greenland.)
12-3-19. I have a ‘K’ in my book!!!!! And to all who read this , “ I’m not missing her yet!” Oh yes I am, I feel absolutely dreadful!!! Her name was Lisa Marie KINARD and I still live in her super sternal notch!!!
Milo Ibrado ... Lol! too funny :D ... but I don't think they were legally married because it was all undercover business they were there to do as a husband and wife team and if they literally were again it's the same because of their professions and I don't think "she" was really in love with Colin Firth regardless their personal or work situation and is why she felt free to pursue the romantic advances of Almasay.
@@EmeraldJade66 they were legally married, she said so in the movie but, while she loved him, she wasn't in love with him. They were best friends and he badgered her until she married him
@@aci1970 Yes I heard when she said that but I took it as though she was just saying for sake of their undercover operation because she wanted to come across as though they really were when they really weren't by law. Anyway, regardless, yes I know they were just best friends (at least according to Katherine but Geoffrey (Firth) was deeply in love with her and therefore why the jealousy so much toward Almasy. Regardless, one of the most wonderful movies to grace the cinematic world to say the least. The cinematography is to die for in this pix as well as the sound score. They couldn't have picked better actors for the lead roles of Katherine and Almasy.
@@bernicerogers2383 .... Yes I know this already so if I stated otherwise then I wasn't thinking at the time. But the first time I watched the movie and heard G. say they were married I thought it was because they had to be for undercover purposes due to their jobs and being there but then realized later on in the movie they actually were but regardless it was a loveless marriage especially on the part of Katherine for the fact that she really fell in love with Almasy and if you REALLY love your "husband" you won't look or allow yourself to feel that way for another man. Masterpiece of a movie to say the least! Cinematography is to die for especially on the BIG screen at the theatre. Soundtrack is the bomb too. Wish there were more movies like this made cause I can't get enough.
I rather think he was a nerd and a solitary personality type, more into his archaeology and ethnographic studies than anything else, but then he meets Katherine and his world flips. I forgot to mention, it's based on a novel. Almasy himself existed but this story is only very loosely based on him, it's entirely fictional.
