How Much Difference Do Tubes Makes?!

After checking how much difference electronics and hardware in/on your guitar make, I went to the next part of the chain: the amp. And without actually modding the amp, or changing the amp altogether, you can only change the tubes... apart from the settings ofcourse. Plenty of people claim that different tubes will make a huge difference, and I want to put that theory to the (non-scientific) test!
The tubes I used are a Tube Town 12AX7 / ECC83 Classic for V1, Tung-Sol 12AX7 / ECC83 Reissue for V2 and V3 and a matched pair of Electro Harmonix EL34 tubes.

I've heard some pretty significant differences with a preamp tube swap. There was a certain Peavey 5150 that came my way and it just sounded like utter trash. I did NOT like it. It was full of Chinese preamp tubes. I replaced ALL of them with new preamp tubes, a mix of Tung-Sol and Mullard reissues, and it totally changed the amp's sound. It now sounded GOOD. I really liked it. I would not have expected or believed it if it hadn't happened to me.

That's completely understandable. There's so much confusion on topics like this because most people don't know the different between gain and volume. They are completely different things. You can only overdrive/distort tubes (or transistors for solid state) with gain. A volume control cannot distort or damage the signal in any way. Gain controls are always on the input of a component, and volume controls are always on the output of a component. When you increase gain on your guitar amp, you're overdriving your preamp tubes, not the el34's or 6550's, or whatever your amp has for power tubes. And even for a clean signal, the preamp tubes still make a big difference. The reason for that is the lower the signal strength, the more its effected by external factors. A line level signal isn't anywhere near as powerful as the signal that goes to your speakers. If you have ever wondered why vinyl can be so expensive to get into, the signal from a phono cartridge is an order of magnitude weaker that a line level signal, so that type of gear has to be built to a higher standard. I just want to make a couple of quick points on volume controls because I know some of you will want to challenge me on my comment about volume can't distort or damage the signal. On most audio devices, you can keep increasing the volume until things start to sound bad and break up. That's not the volume controls fault. A volume control is nothing more than a variable resistor. It can only attenuate the signal, nothing more. So, for example, you're listening to music at normal levels and it sounds fine. In most cases, you can increase the volume until the sound starts to break up and sound bad. When that happens, the volume control is not the cause of the distortion. The speakers themselves may not be able to play that loud, or the amp may run out of power. Either way, its not the signal that's distorting. On the input, too much gain directly causes the signal to distort. If you want to see this happen for real, go to your guitar amp. There's usually a volume and gain knob right next to each other. Turn the volume all the way down and turn the gain all the way up. Now, if you turn the volume up just a bit, you'll have distortion, even at a very low volume level. If you now do the opposite, with less gain and more volume, the signal will stay clean until you push the levels really hard.

Thanks for sharing. I tried Sovtek 12AX7LPS, Mullard 12AX7 RI, Tung-Sol 12AX7 RI and JJ 12AX7 RI. All made by New Sensor in Russia exept the JJ which is made in Slovakia by JJ. The Sovtek sounded reall flat and boring in V1 and had an insane amount of microphonics. The Mullards sounds good but not that good in the V1 in my Deluxe Reverb and it is slightly microphonic. Wouldn't put it in a V1 but does a great Job in the Vibrato preamp socket. The Tung-Sol sounds amazing for a RI and wasn't microphonic at all. Compareable to my NOS tubes in terms of microphonics. The JJ 12AX7 which is labeled as Groove Tube sound ok but out of the 4 Stock tube in my DRRI two were highly microphonic and one was faulty... If you buy reissue tubes just get the Tung-Sols and try to find a seller that selects V1 tubes for a few bucks extra. The quality control of the tubes produced these days is just not existent. I have many nos tubes and the overall quality is in fact much higher because the quality standards in the factories back than was on a different level...

I definitely would invest in room treatment, microphones & speakers and even preamps/EQs over tubes. At least until some start to fail, then it might be a good time to experiment with 'upgrades'

I agree. Get good speakers you like, treat the room where you're recording and make sure the rest of the chain does its job.

Tubes make a HUGE difference in the sound/tone. I have a Marshall DSL 15H that came with Sino (cheap chinese tubes that sounded very harsh). I replaced the power tubes with JJ's and the first preamp tube (the one that creates the most tone) with a vintage Mullard. I think I also replaced the other preamp tubes with JJ's. It sounds wonderful now with a beautiful clear tone that is better than my Fender of Vox amps. The ultra-gain channel which used to sound unbearably harsh to me also sounds usable. I change the tubes in all of my tube amps. NOS Telefunken tubes also sound great, but I tend to use them more for tube mics and mic pres. Don't be afraid to experiment and I suggest that you use NOS vintage tubes (Mullard, Telefunken, RCA, Sylvania, Brimar etc for the preamp tubes (12ax7/ECC83) rather than new tubes, if you want the best tone. I don't think you mentioned what brand/vintage tubes you were replacing. That will make a big difference in the perceived difference/improvement.

I was replacing just the stock tubes. So far I've only heard tubes make somewhat of a difference but I've never heard them make a huge difference. Changing the speaker is a huge difference to me.

Ok, i m stopping after the very first comparison before I forget. I heard a distinct difference from the stock to whatever was in that 1st comparison. The replacement tubes were brighter, higher output, and had more breakup. At least to my ears. I honestly didn't expect to hear that much difference, which is another reason I stopped to say this after only a few minutes in. Im very impressed. Btw, i definitely agree that the speaker makes or breaks your sound, while the tubes just tweak certain characteristics. I would never pay the prices some guys do for their favorite tubes! Is that big a deal? Not to me.

Thanks for chiming in! I would also never pay the big bucks for some expensive tubes, but this was an interesting experiment.

The replacement tubes sound louder in the first example - but quieter and more compressed with the boost on. The replacements sounded loud on the verge of explosion with the fuzz - which is my favourite type of fuzz sound. I don’t know whether the amp needs to be rebiased after the tube change. I was expecting to not hear any difference. Interesting video!

This amp doesn't need to be biased. Thanks for sharing what you hear! As the one playing and recording this, I found it hard to determine if I was being fooled by some placebo effect.

Every tube sounds little different and also depends on braking in time.Especially preamp tubes in different stages will vary. Some pre's are just plain flat some have a more pronounced harmonic spectrum others have more mids etc. play with them to find your preference.

So far I've been happy with these new ones. I feel like the amp is a bit more lively but also nuanced, less sterile than before. I shot this video about 6 months (or more) ago.

I rarely hear much difference in changing tube brands. But if I change from a 12ax7 to a 12at7 or 12au7 tube, then I do hear a small difference. But I think it’s mostly a matter of the 12ax7 being higher output and pushing the amp to break up faster, where the 12at7 has less power so I have raise the volume and gain higher to break up. Same thing with changing power tubes. Very little tone difference to my ears, but the 6L6s have more head room than the lower powered 6v6 tubes. But other than output levels, the tone sounds very similar between the tubes to me.

I haven't even tried different types of tubes in an amp. I used to have a Marshall Origin, the 50 watt head version, right when they came out. I did notice a bigger difference swapping the tubes on that one, but maybe those were cheaper and lower quality tubes, as it's an affordable amp. Most of the time I don't change tubes unless something starts sounding weird, which has rarely happened to me.

Speaker comparison is always welcome BUT, I would love to see you make a video on a subject that is often overlooked and has an incredible influence on guitar amp tone, definitely more so then valves do. I am talking about an electricity supply network and it’s components as well as source of electricity, be it hydro, solar, wind, nuclear etc. for example, coal generated power running through an outdated 60’s Soviet electricity infrastructure can give you that dirty, slightly past edge of breakup sound, whereas solar generated electricity running through a modern distribution network will give you those beautiful and pristine, bell like cleans. This subject is huge so I will have to leave it here, but I do encourage others to contribute.

Well, that's simple for me, as I've tried it all from windmills (I'm Dutch after all) to catching lightning with a kite for that ultimate rock tone. My answer, and the secret of all my sounds, are a hamster wheel powered by a mutated turtle. Nothing sounds better than that!

@@StevenAnthonyGuitar Being curious I tried Mullard reissue PT with Tung Sol pre. Just awful. Back to the OE winged C that it came with and it was like a new amp. The China pre's are solid, sound good with no issues.

I had a Bugera v22 with those cheap Bugera tubes and swapped them for JJs. All of them. Massive difference but I can only get whatever tomann is selling and it's mostly made in China tubes.

@@melexdy that has been my experience too with cheaper amps. I get my tubes from Tube Amp Doctor or Tonefactory, as they have way more options and are often better prices than Thomann.

Don’t underestimate the burn in phase. Had to change tubes on my Plexi about 6 months ago. Took a good while until everything settled for good. This means: your replacement will still change sound a little bit with time. Question number one to me is: will we have a safe supply of tubes in the future or do we all have to go digital or back to solid state 🫢✌️🎸

I've recorded this video about 6 months ago and in the meantime I think the amp sounds a bit more lively and less sterile than it did before with the stock tubes. So even though I still don't know if it's a placebo-effect, I do think I notice a difference. And I think tubes will stick around for a while. Just like vinyl is back in the picture. There's something about the old stuff that people keep longing for. Of course I hope I'm right! 😉
