PS. I said “subsidy” in the first of this video...I meant “stipend”.
HOW MUCH DO FOSTER PARENTS GET PAID? How much money do foster parents make?
FIRST! Let me say, if you are doing foster care correctly you won’t “make” any money, in fact you may spend more on the child than you get reimbursed. So if you are thinking about foster care as a way to make money, please don’t even consider it. These kids need someone who cares about them as a person and for who they are not money they can make by neglecting their needs.
I also forgot to mention in this video that daycare is usually paid for by the state, for younger foster kids as long as it’s an approved daycare.

Foster care isn’t a full time job, I was in foster care, and my foster mother was amazing. Older woman, I came to her in the middle of the night and she fed me an egg sandwich, and a big glass of milk and made me feel so loved

Omg foster care is a full time job! Maybe where you are located it was not but it absolutely depends where you are located. If it wasn’t like a full time job soooo many people would do it.

I was in foster care for a while growing and it was a horrible experience. The family was definitely in it for the money. Once I am well established I would love to be part of a foster family as I know I can help and make a difference.

A lot of us have the heart to love more children... just not enough cash.. I am no weirdo... already raised my own daughters from babies.. ALONE.. now I am dating and most likely marrying a woman who is raising her granddaughter and was wondering about how we can bring another young lady/sibling into the mix (girls need each other) and how to be able to pull it all off.. I would adore the chance to make another young lady's life better too... I would adopt all the children of the world if I could.. I pray we all would

Thanks for this video! It was helpful, as so many of your other videos have been. I also want to add that if you have a close-knit group of friends or co-workers, they can be an awesome resource for getting some items quickly if you don't have funds up front for things like strollers, play-paks, etc. I casually mentioned that I MIGHT be adopting an infant from a relative and my co-workers ran with it! Within 4 days I walked into an office filled with clothes, a stroller, car seat, play-pak, bottles, etc. Some of those things came from a church group that a co-worker is associated with (so use your church as a resource, too!). And, I've gotten several items off of Facebook garage sales, such as a nice changing table and pad, for pennies on the dollar.

I have a comment to make about foster parenting. States should pay full time foster parents or parent more than a subsidy. I have raised or help raise more than 50 children and if a parent is doing what they should be doing by the child it is absolutely a full time job; not only are they taking on all the responsibility of a child teaching morally, responsibly, academically, and extracurricular activities but they are stepping up to meet all the demands that a stressed, neglected, and abused child may have but they are helping this child learn to cope, breaking strongholds of fear, anger, and low self esteem. If the state wants good foster parents they should allow that foster parent to be a full time foster care at home. I raised two children of my own as a single parent, went to college full time, substitute taught, and taught piano and voice after school. My daughter has her master's in accounting and my son has his degree in industrial heat and air. I gave my life for them to have a better life and it was the hardest thing I have ever done! The state should step up to the plate and assume full responsibility financially and pay a lucrative salary for those who are willing to take on that kind of responsibility. It is absurd that if you are in foster care parenting and expect decent compensation that somehow you must be in it for the wrong reasons! It takes financing to support and nurture a child and that is a reality!
@MousyLeigh
@MousyLeigh 2 года назад
You mean they should pay you for choosing to have kids and raise them? That makes no sense at all. Am I understanding this correctly? The ONLY reason they reimburse (partially) foster parents is because they are desperately needing them and finances are the only thing holding some people back from fostering.
@janalemons405
@janalemons405 2 года назад
@@MousyLeigh Well, if you keep abreast of world and current events then you know that congress just gave themselves a very hefty raise and please tell me what the heck for - it does nt take a rocket scientist to figure out there is no adequate leadership in this country!!! I did not say anything about the government paying me to raise my children! If I take on someone else's children with whatever baggage and past and I invest my life and time into them then yes mam I expect the funding to be there to do the job adequately. You are right about loving hearts that truly want to help these children. But you are 100 percent wrong about there not being enough money!! The government has oppressed their own people for so long that they actually have most people believing that there is no money. That's a lie! Many of us grew up in slave mentality states and we the people went to sleep and the government ran it - straight into the ground! (The people that is) And if America becomes that great country it once was or we perceived it was it will be after bloodshed and heartache and loss.

If you can’t afford it, don’t do it. It should never be about finances. These children are more important than your hair, nails, girls night, on and on. If you can’t live without those things then you don’t need to be fostering. Should only be the best. If you want to create a better world then for the love of god show these children that they matter and that the world would be a worse place without them in it. These children need bonding and trust.
@MousyLeigh
@MousyLeigh 3 года назад
I actually can afford to do it without the stipend. The point is some people can’t and there is a shortage of foster homes; therefore, enabling a loving family to be able to afford to care for more children is actually helping. You’re right, no one should do it for money, but some can’t afford to spend an extra $1,500 on a sibling set living with them. It’s not about a girls night out or getting your hair done and if you think it is, you’ve clearly never been a foster parent. I also get really offended with these types of comments because our former foster child is now our child! Period. I have loved her like ours since day one and to imply otherwise is ignorant. A loving family doesn’t have to be a rich family, but since that matters to you I assure your our kid can now afford things 98% of kids can’t.

Whoa. Clearly, you have never been a foster parent. We, FP, love, provide, and care for these children until the system abruptly show up and pick them up one day. There is no day or time for hair, nail, girls night, etc. Instead, spending time and resource for reading books to a 10-year old on 1st grade reading level, teaching how to cook and clean to a soon-to- emancipate teenager, spending all day in park teaching how to ride a bike, etc. Therefore, your comment is an insult to the devoting FP. You don’t know about the reality of this, take a seat and listen, instead of speculating out of some TV show🤦🏻‍♀️

I am a believer and my Bible tells me that money is a defense and that money answereth a matter. Every hour you give is an hour of your life. Do you work for free? I did'nt think so. Do you give your child opportunities? What about art or music lessons? What about baseball lessons or field trips or vacations? These things matter - don't they have it hard enough without being excluded from things that other children get to do? It takes money - I'm sorry I do not share your poverty mentality. What if your child wants a pet or what if you find out that the child you have has a gift that needs mentoring? They deserve more than a throw the dog a bone - I can love you all day long but I can't help you become a self sufficient confident individual because I had no money to afford you the opportunities that would promote your well being? This is nonsense.
@brad349miller
@brad349miller 2 года назад
@@janalemons405 then YOU should pay for it, not the tax payer. All the other parents have to pay for that themselves. If you are responsible with your income and still can't afford it then you shouldn't be getting a pet, blah blah blah. Your Bible clearly doesn't teach you much if you think it's the taxpayer who should support the child. If you're going to be a foster parent then be a foster parent. People who have their own kids don't get to get money every month to take care of them. Foster parents shouldn't either. There should be NO monetary incentive. Then only the people who can afford it and want to do it out of pure love and empathy will do it.

I would love to adopt a child, but I’m going to foster first. I’ve been praying about it. I contacted DSS last week for information on how to start the classes and other info. I hope to get in the June class. They said most classes are online. Where I’m a RN I already have the CPR and first aid they require. Thank you. Every state and agency has different timelines and requirements. Our home study was the last thing we did before being certified. It wasn’t as intense as I thought it would be. One thing to consider when adding a child onto private insurance who has medicaid is that if your insurance isnt great you may actually have more out of pocket expenses for medicines. We added my daughters who are eligible for Medicaid ontomy insurance and now medications have to go through primary insurance which often has an astronomical co pay. We just went through this last month. A med that would be covered if Medicaid was their primary was $200 because we have the kids on insurance from my job. This is info we were given by pharmacy so possibly other pharmacies or states do things diff but def look into it.

@gabriellekelly3462
@gabriellekelly3462 3 года назад
This is actually true. Keeping medicaid alone is probably the best bet in most situations because your private insurance will be hellbent on not paying if a big bill arises. Bad car wrecks are a good example of this. Your car insurance and medical insurance will begin fighting each other over who is responsible but ultimately all debt incurred is in your name, not either insurance company.

From what I've heard you need to demonstrate that you are meeting all your needs in a living situation that can accommodate a child. That is, show proof of your income and then tally up all bills and make sure you're making more money than you're spending. The stipend is supposed to pay for the increase in costs for having the kids, like more food, increased electricity and water bills, more mileage, clothes and toys etc. That being said I don't know how disability factors in, since it's also assistance from the state do they count it as income or not? If you have sufficient income without it I'd assume you may not qualify for it so... Not sure. But a question to ask your local DSS.

Could be a funding issue. Maybe foster gets Fed $$ just like they geo $$$ to get kids adopted from the Feds. Does it really make us better qualified by having a for class, few more meaningless online classes, fire extinguisher, etc... They also demand a fence around my aboveground. Per Reg I could remove the stairs. Foster CPS lady said put up cattle panels. Ok, not per safety code due to gap size.y existing chain link, 2" which is to big. Point is, I need to spend, if DIY maybe 1500. Contract around 2000/2500 with new dense panels. Limber expensive now. So no money goes for child or daycare, just goes to putting a fence up to foster and if adopt it comes down. They even want a fence around empty linerless pool. To become foster adding up all the special things they require will cost me 3 grand. This includes locks, latches, repairs they feel be unsafe. We won't see a penny in reimbursement. We forked over 5 months of daycare because the birth certificate said infant and took 4 months for a new one. Won't see a penny. So yeah, we took an emotional and financial burden in hopes we could get our daughter helped mentally and someday be a mother again. TX is definitely not a reunification state. From day 1 the dice was cast to terminate and foster adopt the child. CPS hasn't tried to help her in any way shape or form.

Yes, single people can adopt, and sometimes are chosen over married couples. I am single. I have adopted and fostered many children. You do need to pass a background check, home check, take classes and so on. You can also adopt if you you have conditions or disabilities as well, as long as you are able to care for the children in your care. It may take a little longer, but it can be done.

One family I knew in Texas, required them to have the child for 6 months before they could officially adopt. I think the had to add a little more time because they moved to a different county in the metro plex.

Meet the basic requirements of being a foster parent. Because foster parents are expected to provide stable, loving homes for troubled children, the state imposes certain minimum requirements. Generally, foster parents must pass a criminal background check and have a regular source of monthly income to pay all personal and household expenses.[10] California state law requires foster parents to be at least 18 years old; however, most counties and private agencies set a higher minimum age. For example, Families for Children requires foster parents to be at least 25 years old,[11] and San Bernardino County looks for foster parents who are at least 28.[12] Foster parents may be single or married, but if living with an unmarried partner the relationship should be stable.[13] Foster parents may own or rent their home, but they must have at least one spare bedroom and the home must meet all state health and safety standards.[14] All foster parents must have a clean driving record, own a car large enough to transport the family, and carry insurance on that car.[15]

@MousyLeigh
@MousyLeigh 3 года назад
So here’s the part I suspect but don’t know for sure. I think it’s harder to get paid if you are a relative that has taken over guardianship until you were verified foster parents and the child was in the foster care system. In which case you should have been paid, but if you just took him in as a relative you may not get paid. Also, if he has any kind of special needs you might qualify for some adoption stipend, but it may be hard after everything is finalized, not impossible, but hard. And that’s only if he was official ya foster child.
@MousyLeigh

I hate some states make decisions regarding their race. Children are children. They all need love. I’ve seen this in Chicago. This is why it’s twisted here. Black children are more money hence why they push foster care out more, but, you realize they are being using these children for the wrong reasons. It becomes a business for soo many foster parents, that’s when the abuse comes in. They consider these children as little paychecks. If paychecks are based on their race, what do you think is gonna happen. These states that have this policy has created a vicious circle.

Realistically children come out distorted scarred we need to find a better way to work this system that helps 6 children and by helping the children by giving all this money subsidy checks foster care balance that out kids that some of that money to help the mothers and by helping the mothers to help themselves that is how you are helping the child don't just place the child in foster care or it's some type of home where there just collecting the money I had did some undercover work myself and let me tell you there are things that I've seen in the system that would horrify millions of people. I interviewed many adult that Warren foster care they are scarred for life and some of them end up into drugs some of them don't don't let this tragedy happen anymore people we need to get together and do something about this to help the mother this is how they're helping the children the social workers are there to help the children am I right? Well by helping the mother depending on the situation to get herself together to help herself as well you're helping the child especially in older child if the ray 4 years old or 3 years old or two years old or even one years old people think that there must be a better way and like I say sometimes children do need to go to foster care but in other cases they're making big mistakes and the core is just going by what the DEA says and the social worker says and they just look up a case and nobody really wants to do with anything they have so many children that need to be in placement separate the children that need to be with their mothers and find a good solution for the ones that really need to help to most of the time that can be avoided the child needs to be with the mother look at my brother if he was placed in foster care she would have been worse he became a successful young people I'm asking for help in my wildest dreams I have never thought that's what happened to my own grandchild speeches my daughter is low I have a very low income and Matt's has a roof over his head so they don't have to be homeless in the street she tried her best everyday they do to keep a roof over their heads my daughter needs help to help her child you got to think about it is there to help the children will up their there to help the children they need to help the mother to help herself Anna doll that funding that they say they don't have excuse my French but it is bull I will get as many interviews as possible but before I do that I want to make sure that the proof is in the proof. To all the children system and the ones that are not quite in the system yet may God have mercy on their souls let's hope that the ones that really need to be in foster care have good people very good people that really want to help not just for the taxes not just for the money please people we need to get together we need to stop children are going to read
@MousyLeigh

Well, I had a hard time understanding your point of view the way this is written, but I will say every case is different. There are flaws in the system from everyone’s perspective. Foster parents, bio family, caseworkers, judges, everyone. I myself never went into foster care for money and all of the money we’ve received have gone to care for the child. That’s why it’s there so people who can’t afford to care for extra kids can. There is a huge shortage of foster families already. Imagine if they weren’t financially reimbursed. And I certainly can’t speak for every scenario l, but in ours the bio parents were givens lots of help including free rehab, resources, help with transportation, housing, clothes, furniture, fee counseling for every family member. Lots of help, plus chance after chance to get their kids back. Chances I don’t think they should have had based on their behavior and little effort on their part. They were all talk and 0 action. Then after all the opportunities and free help they received they would get on social media and act like someone just stole their kids from them with no help. The kids are absolutely the ones who suffer no matter which perspective you look at any case from. And that’s why these flaws should be addressed.

Foster parents should not get paid a dime. Most children are removed from their biological parents because they are struggling financially. If the government had of given them the money until they could get back on their feet, then the children could have stayed with their parents.
@MousyLeigh
@MousyLeigh 4 месяца назад
Actually most kids are removed because the parents are on drugs and neglect or abuse them. Almost all actually. There aren’t enough foster parents to care for them and many think they can’t foster because of the extra added cost of caring for another child. The amount that is paid does not cover that extra cost. So unless someone is neglecting the child, the foster parent doesn’t “make” any money. It’s only to off set some of the cost of the child.
@MousyLeigh
@MousyLeigh 4 месяца назад
I’m intelligent enough to know my adopted child’s bio parents have their own struggles and trauma that contributed to their behavior, but I’m not going to lie, I wouldn’t react, but if I saw them in real life my gut reaction would be to want to punch them right square in the face for the pain and suffering they’ve caused my daughter because of their decisions. No child should have to deal with what these foster kids deal with. Not one. I love this child more than life itself, and the heartache it took through this process was overwhelming at times. It deeply offends me when people who know nothing about the system make comments and assumptions like yours. If you want to help, become a CASA volunteer to advocate for these kids and see for yourself how screwed up this system is and how many chances they give these bio parents. In my experience it’s way too many and to the detriment of these kids.
