How much do sims traits impact their behaviour? // Sims 4 traits experiment

Ever wondered how much sims traits impact their behaviour? I decided to conduct a little experiment to find out the answer to that!
In this video we will be putting 2 sims with conflicting traits in separate homes with lots of activities to observe their behaviour.
Overall it was pretty disappointing. I was really hoping my sims would behave differently or interact with different objects, but they just ended up getting caught up in pretty much the same routine, which makes me think traits don’t really impact sims behaviour at all!
Do your sims behave differently based on their traits? I’d love to know in the comments!

One thing is that the knitting objects only works if it's in your Sim's inventory so they couldn't knit if they wanted to. I find that if the knitting basket is in the inventory, the sims will sutonomously knit (quite a lot, actually). I'm always ending up with random plants hangers and clothes in my Sim's inventory. The best traits, imo, that affect gameplay are Green Fiend (from Eco Lifestyle) because that one gets Sims to autonomously garden all the time, creative, and music lover.

I've found that the likes/dislikes actually affect what my sims do a lot. In one save, I have two twin girls who are teens now, one likes animals and the other likes gardening and the garden girl will automatically go garden if things need being done and gets positive moodlets from it. It's nice. I wish taking care of animals had a skill so my other twin would do that automatically!

Sims 4 sims sure do look after themselves. They are so, self contained? Sims 2 sims would probably have burnt the house down or had a breakdown and had the therapist or social bunny visit and just been way more chaotic.

I feel like they were as different as I expected. The slob and lazy traits were the most powerful for the guy, and the active trait was the most powerful for the girl. I think the fact that she cleaned and he didn’t and she showered and he didn’t was a big enough difference to at least show that the traits work a bit.
@madsahren2208

i personally feel like there were very different patterns in their behavior! and in real game play i think you would see more traits crop up, and situations where their traits affect them. Like if the slob goes out while unshowered, people will react to him stinking- just one example. perfectionist is probably not the right trait for this test, they just take longer to do things and are more likely to scrap a project in the middle of doing it. it doesnt make them more likely to do things though, maybe creative would have been a good one to test

@bitmapadv

In order for your test to work, you need to get rid of useless objects, and make a very careful selection on the ones you keep based on amount of fun they provide. For example the bookcase is fun 5, those TVs were fun 7. In order to make them use computer less you need to chose a cheap computer (the 2nd on - "How low can you go"). You also need to provide music - the wall speaker (fun 2) is great - and chose a TV with way less fun (that will make sims dance instead of watching TV). Washing clothes and cleaning is not (AFIK) coded into sims independent behavior - unless they have "neat" or childhood behavioral traits ("responsible" and "well mannered"). For workout you need a separate room with energizing decor and fun providing workout machines - such room can make a lazy slob hit fitness 10 in no time. Bottom line, the surroundings you provide modify the moods of the sims and that directly influences their behavior. If you would've chosen traits that add moodlets (like romantic or creative) those would've had noticeable impact on sims actions. If you ever want to repeat this "experiment" I hope you will remember my suggestions.
@Daiska_Plays
@Daiska_Plays 2 года назад
The only noticeable difference I've found in sims, is how they get along with each other depending on traits. When I started, I really liked Paolo Rocca. Mainly because a sim I was playing just hit it off amazingly with him, and I never touched them because their autonomy was so entertaining to just leave them alone. They never wanted to be apart. But when I had another sim hook up with him, that had different traits, they ignored each other most of the time. It was a huge difference. So for me, that's where traits kick in, not in their behavior by itself. Ever since, I'm always looking for sims that work good with each other, because it's entertaining as hell.
@LadyCynthiana
@LadyCynthiana 2 года назад
I think this is on point because when they were designing The Sims 4 their big focus was on how sims interact with each other, not necessarily how they act alone. So put them in a room with things to do, they'll mostly pick the things that raise their fun and social. Put them in a room with other sims and that's where more of their personality traits actually are apparent. (Especially the ones that control social behavior, such as mean, evil, goofball, good, outgoing, etc.)

I think traits were designed to affect emotions more than autonomy. Since I think most simmers don’t really just let their sims do whatever they want anyways. Lazy sims will get annoyed when made to work out while active sims will thrive. Also they seem to really resist learning new skills themselves, but once learned they’ll be much more likely to work on them without being prompted? It would be interesting to see this same experiment done, but you just make them gain the first level in all available skills then leave them to do their thing.

I think the reason they don’t prefer to build skills autonomously is that the AI seems to prioritise fun (which computers, dart boards, tvs and books have in common) when their needs are taken care of. And sims don’t get fun from things they do not particularly like so that’s pretty much your fault (not trying to blame you but they aren’t that different since they don’t have any preferences) I would conduct this experiment with either all the hobbies liked to see their real preferences or give them some dislikes to see if they will avoid those. But tbf most of the traits are rather useless when you aren’t actively using what they are for
