I was quoted $1,000 from one Sisterlock consultant and $1,250.00 from another. I went with $1,000 not only because of the price, but her work was better, the drive was shorter, reties are $120 vs $140 and vibe was better. I currently have traditional locs that I’ve had for 18+ years. I’m just ready to start a new fresh journey.

Thanks for sharing. At the end of the day, Pricier doesn’t always mean better. On the hand, reties at $120 is insane 😳.

Your hair looks beautiful. In Ny for about three inches of hair in 2022. , I paid $600. She did a nice job but her professionalism was terrible. Ended up with another Loctician who is doing great with my hair. Not a bad idea to do self work but the time and energy 🤦🏽‍♀️

Thank you so much Angela for being here. Welcome to the loc family. How is it going with your hair? Feel free to share some tips you may have. I understand what you mean with time and energy when it comes to doing self re-ties but I had no choice. Whilst this is not the long term plan, it works for now and I have learned so much about my hair doing it myself ☺️

My est was 01/14/2014 and cost $800 . My hair was 12-14 inches and took 36 hours. Now my person was a trainee. I had previously planned to go with consultant who is out of state and was going to pay around $2500. I didn’t go with her bc she has a new policy on not installing on over 8 inches of hair and I wasn’t willing to cut my hair. When I pay for my retie for the first time it’ll cost $110. My lady charges a flat rate. I don’t think sisterlocks are expensive to maintain if you’re accustomed to getting your hair done weekly or biweekly when relaxed for example. I was never into braids but from what I’ve seen the braiding prices are astronomical for temporary hair styles. So it’s all in what you’re accustom to paying for and not having the idea that locs are no maintenance when they are lower maintenance.

Hey lady. Thanks for sharing your experience with Sisterlocks. $2500 for an install is wild but to each their own (I guess). My take on sisterlocks being expensive stems from a comparison with my previous lifestyle of mostly wigs and braids. I can go months without purchasing new weave or doing braids because I have options of hair at home and when I’m not wearing them, I am rocking my fro. So going from having to spend $0.00 every month to $150 or more every 6weeks is definitely a lifestyle change that one has to really consider before embarking on the sisterlock journey. That’s why I’d always maintain that locs are both low and high maintenance. ❤️

I love your blazer. Can you share the brand and where it's from?

Thank you 🙏🏾 it’s a Zara blazer (very popular at the time I got it) but it’s been some time. Not sure they still have it. Sorry 😞

I used to live in Los Angeles and got my Sisterlocs done back in 1999. It was 450.00 then.

$450??? That doesn’t even cover a half head install of locs anymore. So how much were your reties?

Thanks for sharing. I’ve a couple of questions 1. Do you think your loctitian would take as long now with more experience? I’ve seen a number of videos and 40-ish hours for 6-8 seems quite long. 2. Was your loctitian certified by the sisterlocs company? I like the perspective you bring on the running costs of microlocs (I’m generalizing for all small locs here). Foe people who did a lot of styling of their loose natural hair and who used a lot of products, microlocs would be cheaper. I hardly did anything so microlocs are hardly cheaper for me. I’m just in my 5 and half months loc’d and I’ve spent more than I’d typically spend on my hair so it’s really all relative. It is less fussy I must admit even though it took getting used to especially since my microlocs are in the budding and fizzy stage. Happy New Year! Here’s to a year of growth and joy

Hello Nkechi. Happy New Year and thanks for watching. To answer your first question, my loctician at the time didn’t seem new to the game. From conversations with her, she had been in business for some years and she herself has had her locs for close to or over 10 years. I do agree now that 40ish hours was long when I began to see videos of people with longer and fuller hair getting their locs done in fewer than 40 hours. The only justification I can think of is that she was very meticulous and careful to make sure each loc was up to par. Also, people work differently and I can’t compare her business standards with others unless something seems convincingly off. Your second question falls under the category of “I didn’t do all the proper research before embarking on this journey”. On the other hand, if I had checked the sisterlocks registry to find a certified loctician in my area, I would have been limited to experts who were 1-2 hours away from me. There weren’t a lot in my area offering the service. Also, I’m learning that though a registry is handy in decision making, it doesn’t 100% reflect the quality of work that a person is capable of offering. There are many locticians who are great at their work but aren’t in the registry and there are likely those in the registry whose work doesn’t reflect their credentials. So it’s somewhat of a risk whichever way you lean when it comes to trusting a person to conduct a service. To be honest, I didn’t even know micro locs existed when I got my hair installed. If I was to redo this decision, I would have still chosen sisterlocs (technic-wise) but micro locs definitely look as good.

This is why a lot of people are doing their own hair because most of these locticians scandalous and scrupulous. They are charging what they want to charge I was told, 300$ for a retie one time and I hopped out that chair so fast😢...smh. I know people have to make a living but some of these locticians are just downright greedy. I even thought about cutting my locks off so I can maintain them myself by starting over because I don't have the money to pay someone $300 if that was the case I could have just remained texlaxed.

Hello 👋🏾 Thank you for watching and also for your comment. I totally understand where you’re coming from. I also would not have succumbed to paying $300 either. While I understand that this is a business and a source of livelihood for many locticians and I definitely do not diminish their craft in any way because it’s a lot of work, I also understand that I have to also put myself in a position where I create and offer value to myself and others so that I am never in a position where I totally depend on others for a product/service hence the reason I taught myself how to retie. Both locticians I have used were definitely reasonably priced compared to the numbers I have heard other people quote. The wisdom in all of this is to cut your cloth according to your size and be resourceful.
