The phrase raining cats and dogs isn't quite right when you talk about hurricanes. This hurricane season, we throw an average one onto a cloud scientist's scale to see just how much water these monster weather machines carry through the sky. NPR's Robert Krulwich and Odd Todd explain how much a hurricane weighs.

Wow, that is a poor explanation of why clouds "float". There is a "surface" at which a rising parcel of air will condense to form water droplets due to adiabatic cooling. This varies depending on relative humidity. If the parcel of air falls the droplets in it will evaporate at that same surface (adiabatic warming).

let me explain: Yes clouds weight more than people but u see every molecule of water is very very tiny. So in reality the hot air is only pushing individual molecules at the same time. If u were to squeeze the cloud u would get a lot of heavy water but because the molecules are spread apart from each other they dont really weight anything so the hot air can push them up. However, humans are solid and all our molecules are together so we end up being heavier than the cloud if u see it this way.

At the scales involved in this video, surely lbs or kg are both fairly useless as units of measure. It would make more sense to use tons or tonnes. And probably also more useful to use a comparison object that is more familiar than a blue whale, like a family car or something.

I think the air current only can hold the lighter parts of the cloud. Once the warm air current becomes too weak or the cloud becomes too heavy it set off a change reaction wear the rain water is allowed to condense and fall but as it rains the cloud is losing mass(ton of water per second) which makes it easier for the air to hold it up. But like i said condensation is a chain reaction so even after the cloud is lightened(both weight and in color) the rain continues to fall for some time after.

No. Clouds take water from one place and drops it on another so water returns. I think I read somewhere that water can't be destroyed or disappear because if you heat it, it evaporates until it becomes water vapor until it condenses and eventually become liquid again

the better answer is that the cloud is less dense than the air below it, therefore it doesn't fall, just like you float on water. it's not about how much you weigh, it's about how dense you are compared to water

they float cause the water is in such tiny bits... they rain when theyre saturated so water droplets start to touch together and form drops and it falls. but because they can't fall the cloud is technically weightless just like a balloon with just enough helium to prevent it falling. it weighs as much as air and is only as dense as air, therefore is weightless. if you took its mass and condensed it and put it in a pool it would weigh 216 thousand pounds etc.

This video is of course a bit simplified. Humid air is less dense than dry air, that is why humid air rises in the first place. If you don't believe me check out the ideal gas law. It takes about 2 water molecules in the gaseous form to buoy up one molecule of water in the liquid form. And the rising air under the clouds does not need to be warm, it could be humid too. When it cools water will come out of the gaseous form and that is why a typical cloud has a "ceiling" to it.
@FedericoM-1
@FedericoM-1 12 лет назад
Because we're not spread out as the clouds are so the hot air has less surface to act on. Also since our feet are on the ground the air doesnt really get to us... Not the hot steamy upward going air at least.
