Hello You Tube, it’s Rob from Maxwells Grass Cutting Services, based in the North East of England.
In today’s video I want to talk about expectations. What is a realistic salary for a UK gardener . What’s your expectations?
Is it possible that new people coming into the industry are doing so with rose tinted glasses.
I look forward to reading your comments and feedback.
Thanks for watching. Please like and subscribe.
Remember, when the green gold is growing, keep mowing.
All the best.
Rob.

Definitely achievable. There is a ceiling and line where the more you do the costs suddenly start to multiply out tho on kit and wages etc so finding the balance is key sometimes.

Another great video Rob, it took me a good number of years to earn a good wage. It takes a while to learn what to say yes and no too. I no longer do big hedges as there is a chance I will hurt my back (again) and not be able to earn I've just been doing price increases for the coming year. They're up 10% across the board, and it was the same rise last year, too. 30k isn't what it was a few years ago, with the cost of living going up so much. If people who have been self-employed for a few years and are watching this can't hit the 30k, they need to figure out what's going wrong and fix it.

I was considering 10%, but have increased them by 7.9%. I'm going for 10% with new customers. I still don't think its enough and trying to reduce time per project to make ends meet

@@PGSL-r5n everything else has gone up at least 10 percent in the last year. Inflation may be starting to come down now but take into account what is was for most of the year It's really easy to fall into the trap of once your skint to think everyone else is too

I'm a sole Gardener in Cornwall. This is my 3rd year and to earn 30k after tax is very hard. I've been doing jet washing and gutter cleaning. A lot of people don't value hard labor. And the costs of tools and the upkeep. Grass is the bread and butter in my case but when it's time for hedges that's when you notice the money comes in. Have a good season and looking forward to the next video.

Another great video Rob thanks - just handed my notice in today (aged 57) and leaving a well paid job in construction which I thoroughly dislike - I can't be sitting at a desk rotting any more, I've got too much life left - get me outdoors come rain or shine! Sensible advice, I've planned my exit and been lucky enough to have saved a very small pot to carry me through and buy a van. I've got 2 regular customers booked for a bi-weekly cut - clearly a long way to go before I get anywhere near £30k gross but I'm happy with that for now 😂 keep up the good work; I'm off to make the patented Maxwells lawnmower ramps 😊

I did gardening and pool maintenance from the ages of 18 -40. When I was young you had no respect from customers and they paid you peanuts, but as I got older and I gained more knowledge and confidence the tables turned and I learnt how to price things properly. I used to work for people who owned 2 or 3 properties and priced their garden/pool per month, It was hot 12 months a year so always work to be done. I had the same customers till they died or moved. 30K per year was easy to do from about the ages of 28 onwards.

It was a bit different for me when I started out on my own. I’d done 7 years with a gardening firm who decided to sell up to a much larger company. I took the plunge to go it alone & managed to persuade quite a few of the existing customers to be on my books, so I hit the ground running.

Gardening is an ideal occupation for those in their 50s, its when you're almost mortgage free and your wife earns a decent wage, a late life career change, in your 30s its all graft and stress, just feeding the kids and paying the mortgage alone, some of the younger lads ive come across, have all the gear and no idea, rushing to make it to the next job, because they're afraid of saying no to new customers, and filling their diary, losing customers isn't an option. Thank god I'm retired 😂😂😂😂👍

I’ve just started advertising myself to cut grass as a sideline to my full time job. I’ve got a few bookings but it’s slow. I’ve made a website, RU-vid channel, Facebook business page and I’ve run a sponsored ad. I was expecting loads of messages and calls so yeah it’s going to take a while! Still working full time so no money pressure yet but I’ve spent out a bit on equipment and servicing etc. thanks again for the content and keep it coming. 👍👍

I’m 45, I live in Cornwall and i work 4 days a week because i look after my daughter for one day a week. However, if i factor in days off due to weather and other unforeseen events over a year period, i actually work 3 days a week. This brings in just over £33k annual net. If i were working 5 days a week, i would be earning a lot more. I’m happy with my work life balance. I save money, as well as invest in stocks, shares, index funds and a pension. Great content and advice Rob, applicable to anyone i think!

30K net a year is achievable if you plan and price accordingly to your skill level. In summer I look for and plan my winter work to see me through the ‘non grass cutting’ months of November, December, January and February. If you plan and price jobs correctly you will always have plenty of work, especially if you have built up a good reputation in your work area. Rob, do you have a PA 4 for granular application of fertiliser and slug pellets in your lawn care work? Also Rob, what’s the weirdest payment you’ve received? I once did some gardening work for a guy who paid me in garden centre vouchers. Beat that if you can. Great videos, that keep the mind fresh. 👍

The gardening sector has always been a low wage. But if you get in with the right people and get a good portfolio, you can earn a good wage. I think 30K can be achievable if the weather plays in your favour and get a good client base. but will be hard work to get there like you say Rob.

Hi Rob, I think anyone starting up a business be it gardening, window cleaning, pressure washing, detailing etc you've gotta hold down a part time employed job for the first few years as well as your new career. Gives it time to grow gradually. No pressure to ensure it puts food on the table from day 1. Work 3 days a week employed then 2 gardening / window cleaning. Eventually move up to 3 days gardening including Saturday. Then when you're struggling to keep all the work squeezed into 3 loooong days, you quit your employed job and spread your 3 days gardening over 4 days in the week. This is the best bit when your self employed job matches what you were getting full time in an employed job but you have 4 sensible days. Then it's just a matter of quality customers finding you and before you know it you're earning more than you could working an employed job. It might take 5 years. Or more. Or less. But it will happen if you keep going. That's my opinion anyway. You Rob are a hardworking, honest, inspiration and anyone who says otherwise has got the wrong opinion. 👍👍🙂🙂

I've nearly done 3 years self employed now, still not earning what I was when I left the factory. My hourly rate is much better, but take away travel time, holidays, quiet season and the amount you can physically do in a day; working solo is not going to make me millions! It is a satisfying job though; and nobody's ordering me about! 👍🏼

Would like to take it to a grand a week eventually, that would be a very comfy wage and would enable me to buy instead of rent..any day i dont have garden work i do clearances and tip run work. Easier money than garden work too

Some surprising comments here, saying 'if you don't earn/charge X amount you might as well get a job'..well, anyone who has the drive to get up in the morning and create their own work schedule, and pays the bills year after year, gets huge respect from me, whether they earn above or below £30k. Yes, you could earn £25K a year working in a supermarket or factory, but would you go back to that? I certainly wouldn't. The upside of being my own boss far outweighs the downside, for me.

I don’t understand how people are saying that 24k is minimum wage? I’m just starting, and I am doing it 2 days a week as swell as my day job. I have no van, and to keep overheads down I’m doing it out of the back of my car - a chuck in a truck as Keith Kalfas calls it. I don’t expect, even if I go full time, to earn any more per month than 1.5 k (BEFORE expenses). All of the things you mention they are tax deductible (van, equipment, etc, because they are a necessary part of your business).

I'm not a gardener by profession but at least I know what a hard job it is, never mind all the other shit you have to deal with.

You can earn 30 k working at a garden centre for sure. Also get paid holiday. Worth a thought. Gardening is a lifestyle and a way of life. If you wanna get rich out of it then it's probably the wrong business. There is only so many hours in a day.

Plenty of channels showing people cutting grass. Your channel is different as it's predominantly van chats so don't worry about it. All the best

Ha ha. My biggest advice to a newcomer is don't fill your books with crappie jobs like me unless your happy to dump them in a year or two.ive got loads of £15 or less customers and you can only do so many jobs in a day.

@@nathanbray1358 if you increased your price to say £20, you might lose a couple of them. But end up earning the same but working less.

I'm the same as you self employed and I don't believe you can turnover 50k in the North East by yourself. You need a team of 2 to earn that kind of money and then you're down the rabbit hole of staff.

I hope that £30k guy is putting some money in a pension, that's the hardest to sort when you haven't got a company banging in 12% in ontop of your contributions!!😳
