So, a 10k round trip without doing any side trips. That basically means that you are servicing your vehicle at least once, if not twice (depending on vehicle age and fuel type). And with older vehicles that's definitely not cheap either, even if doing it yourself. So, the hidden costs (plenty more as well) will keep adding up. It makes sense if your only heading over for a limited time frame. But if doing it to see other things as well (such as a half lap or 3 month trip) then it's another story

I live in perth, have owned a 4x4 for 20 years, and still haven't got to exmouth. Next year! Hopefully get to the east coast with my own 4x4 before I'm too old to enjoy it

Great and true advice. We did this take or hire comparison recently from Brisbane. We’re actually on the trip right now. We ended up hiring a Prado for 34 days. Not worth taking our 4wd. Cost us $3900 for the car hire with low insurance excess. Thought that was good. Steve 🇦🇺

That was bloody awesome break down and showing the east coast we can hit WA on a budget!

As someone living in Perth I did a very similar trip back in 2022 to Exmouth via steep point (coz why not) and then to Karijini. 6 days and 4 thousand kms lots of driving where my shortest drive was 5 hours. From memory the cost of that was nearly 3 grand with fuel food camping and not taking into account the maintenance I had to do after. As you said WA is huge and vast and is still sometimes out of reach for us. To give some perspective on the distance Perth to Exmouth shortest way is 1200km where as Sydney to Brisbane is only about 900km. I love this video and the transparency you give to the viewer and as a west Aussie I also want to say thank you for showing off our beautiful state to the everyone

A west Aussie who’d be interested in the reverse comparison with an east coast equivalent of overlander (or them if they’re aus wide)

Love WA, I have been too FNWA Kununurra to Broome, Broome to Alice Springs, and Perth, Busselton, Margret River, and Rot Nest, and loved it. It was an incredibly long time ago, and have always wanted to go back, but life gets in the way and the East Coast was easier to explore with the family and my family loved it as well. This could definitely be the answer I can leave the car at home, and do a fly and drivecation for a few grand more then what it would cost just to do the upgrades on my 4x4 . Thanks RDD

Bridge, that was a very cool way of putting it on paper and braking down the costs... yeah definitely worth hiring a vehicle instead of driving all the way, sure, my dream is to do the great loop of Australia one day, but on short trips like that, if you had 10 days to kill this is definitely the way of doing it. Great Video, Bridge. It's a long drive from the east coast to W A. The cost of Fuel alone can be a killer. Tasmania is a similar situation. Taking a car and camper on the ship, compared to flying over and renting a vehicle. It could be an idea for a Future Red Dirt Diary Video episode.

That's a great video. But to be different, we are going to drive over the Brisbane in April from Perth for a competition. I have taken 5 weeks off work and will drive quick to Brisbane and after the competition drive slowly back.

another way is put your car on a truck and have it sent over, a mate did it cost $1500 return
