GoHerping what kind of lightning do I need to keep a leopard gecko inside like exact temps I've been keeping mine outside because summer but now winter's come plz reply in comments
Make a deal with whoever you live with. Like say if you pass all your classes with a B+ or something like that you can get the animal. It's how I worked out getting a snake. My grandma despises snakes as well, but still getting one if I keep up my end of the deal.
Grayce Kovarik my mom is absolutely terrified of snakes to the point to were if she can't run away from it she will beat you and the snake with whatevers near her until it's gone and she said that when I move out and have a snake she won't visit unless it's in another room with the door locked. She's gotten a bit better about being in the same room as a snake (ie pet stores) but she won't get anywhere near them unless she doesn't know they are there. I'm still working on convincing her to try to get over her fear but once something's in here mind it's really hard to convince her otherwise.
Grayce Kovarik It’s actually great that you want one now, even if you can’t get one. Be sure to study up and find the breed you want. Save, save, save up as much money as you can. Then, when you eventually graduate high school and find your own place, you’ll be fully prepared! Well, at least that’s what I did. Good luck love :)
If you buy a used tank that already has a lid, make your own hides and decorations, it can be fairly inexpensive. I got fake plants from the dollar tree, used a plastic planter from the dollar tree, and buy generic Aspen bedding from Walmart. My bowl is a small casserole dish from a thrift store and was only $2. Be creative, as long as it is safe for your reptile. Also made my beardie a hide out of a cheap wicker basket. Love your videos, got some good corn snake advise from you. Take care.
@@jakefulton8501 bruh you cant tell anything about her pfp. you see two reptiles and what looks like a flat rock with grain on it. youre in no condition to say its nasty lmao
"Woah my voice what's happening" love that you keep that stuff in there! Getting my first noodle soon I already have 99% of what I need. So excite. Very boop.
You'd be surprised how many families put tanks on the road when a small easy to fix area is broken. I just got a sixty gallon aquarium this way, all it was missing was a tank lid and it did have a small crack.
For me with my snakes you have the initial setup and enclosure cost of $100-$400 on top of the cost of the snake. Then for monthly cost you have about $10-$20 per snake. Also if you plan on getting a snake (or any other animal), save up and store away a good chunk of change for vet bills. Snakes are exoctic pets so you need to see an exoctic vet meaning they cost more on average. It is irresponsible to get a pet that you can not afford medical treatment for if something happens. Call the vet that you plan on using and ask for some quotes on cost for the common problem snakes experience then for me I save up one and half times the cost of the most costly problem.
CrazyIrishMedic and make sure you call around vets for the best price when I got my Bobo from his previous owner it was a total of $110. $65 for a visit and $45 for antibiotic shots. Cheapest exotic pet price I have found and not only that but they know their stuff too which is a huge bonus.
I guess i am really lucky, my vet does free control visits and asks to get paid only if the animal is sick and he must do something. The only time i paid (my snake had a respiratory infection and parasites) i paid just around 30$ :O
Also don't forget with enclosures, Craigslist or other similar sites will a lot of times have discounted set ups! I got 2 set ups for my corn snakes ( 2 complete 20 gallons with lids and decor) for $40 off of Craigslist. Just make sure you clean and sanitize it before you put your animals in!
Hey Alex I'd love to see a feeding guide video. What size mouse/rat for what size snake. When to size up food, when to know your snake is hungry. I'm new to keeping snakes and worried I'm underfeeding or feeding too small. Also I'd love to see a video on your newest ball python.
Alexander H I didn’t wanna get a second hand one tho cuz some are damaged and could contain mites and stuff like that. I got a 4 ft vivarium tho and it was only like £90 which is rly good. All the other stuff was what made the price go so high.
I’ve never had any reptiles, but I love watching his videos because it informs me about the reptiles I would like to have, and will be helpful if I end up getting a reptile!
@@69meowy2 Lol you say that like all spiders have an extreme wobble. Most don't. I don't personally own any, but I don't have a problem with people keeping them. Breeders need to be responsible and not breed snakes with severe wobble.
Your voice and demeanor helps with my anxiety. As a 20 year old dude, thanks lol. Just got my first firefly bp a couple weeks ago and you’ve helped a lot with my knowledge.
I'm a new subscriber and I'm currently trying to get everything for his/her home all set and ready before even buying the snake. Which means figuring out the temp -hum first and foremost. Your videos are super helpful.
Really dedicated subscriber here. I don’t own reptiles, nor do I have an interest in doing so but am totally enthralled by your videos. You’re doing great work!
Thank you... you are doing such a service because even I (and I'm adult) wanted to buy a ball python on impulse but these videos confirm how important it is to wait and have the necessary funding to get it a great home/enclosure and continue to take good care of it
Just got my first snake a royal/ball python took my mum loads of persuading but thanks to these videos I wa s able to persuade my mum to let me get one keep it up=)
I'm just a very dedicated subscriber. No jokes I literally watch all his videos because they are interesting and he has great production quality. Also a lot of theese things like mites may occur to me one day.
I’m about to get a snake I’ve been doing research for about two years because I’ve been begging my parents to let me keep one and there home and they finally let me because I got a bearded dragon about a year ago and I have proven to them I am responsible enough and know my info I need for a ball python
I am saving up for a ball python. I have been working on convincing my parents that snakes aren't bad. Because both my parents HATE snakes. We saw one at the pet store and it was really clumsy so my dad watched it and laughed at it and now says he doesnt mind the non venomous ones. My mom wouldn't even look at it though.
Great video Alex you know you are just a really smart person most people don't make videos like you do and I just think that's what makes you so cool as in if someone ask me about reptiles I'll just tell them go to goherping he knows everything you what to know lol you know what I mean haha
I think you should also consider electricity bills into the general costs of keeping a pet snake. I was calculating a bit, depending on the heating source it varies a lot, but if you have several snakes and live in a colder climate/ older house/ it might go up considerably, if it is a snake, that prefers it a lot warmer than your room temperature. Super helpful video, that would be the only thing i'd like to add!
Gr8 free hide; broken large decorative pots. If you see one broken at a big box store, they will usually give them away. Glazed pots look better but unglazed holds more moisture. The rough interior of a well made pot is nice for scratching too. My Ball, Sulley, has a pot hide & a fake log hide too.
In England I gor an exo-terra medium long and it was about 80 quid. I got this for my new (and first) anerythristic corn snake. Finally my first reptile!!
I live in the U.K, there’s quite a lot of reptile keepers over here. The most popular and easiest to find enclosure over here is wooden Vivariums with glass sliding doors. They are actually really easy to maintain. They have ventilation at the top back and have slots for wires like thermostats. It’s kinda the only option here in the U.K. as it’s weirdly hard to find exo terra glass enclosures. Unfortunately they are pretty expensive 😣 The lengths we go for our pets am I right? 😂
I hit like before I watch the video this kid! is awesome and loves his animals like I love mine and I am all about my pets I have 2 cats 1ball python 2 longtail grass lizards and a garden skink
thank you for all the videos you have shared with us . I have a question . I wanna buy corn snake, but I do not want to buy from a pet store, and there is no snake shelter in my city, do you recommend buying it online? if yes which website? and if no what do you recommend? thank you a lot .
So as a recent buyer 20 gal are usually around 80-100 which is perfect if your just starting out and don’t have a thousand dollars to just drop on the hobby. 2 hides would be about 30$ for the max and probably 10-15 for a water bowl big enough for your snake to soak in and I tried to go bigger so I won’t have to buy more stuff in the future kinda like buying slightly bigger shoes and growing into them. I used coconut fiber substrate which was 9.99 a bag that was enough to cover 2 inches on the bottom and still have some left over. Also you can go on eBay and find cheaper lights that use less power but still have the heat from the day light and uvs from the night light and it’s around 40$ for that and if you want to decorate your tank probably add 50 max for some moss and a log or something to put in the middle to make it where it’s not just baren. They need room to grow but they like it to fit just right so I recommend if you get the 20 gal or bigger to make sure you get plenty of decorations. It costed me around 250$ for the initial setup with food and everything else. And with the snake around 300$ for set up food and a beautiful ball python that’s my baby. I only made this comment to verify your estimates were pretty damn accurate. I’d say spot on but every situation and person is different.
#dedicatedsubscriber I own a ball python, a reticulated python, a Kenyan sand boa, and a hognose, always check Craigslist of aquariums (sanitize it if you do)
Hi, I would really suggest you to build an enclousure by your self! If you do it out of OSB its really cheap. I did build 2 of mine by myself and its not that hard and it makes a lot of fun. Whats positiv too is that those OSB it isolate a lot better than glas, so your power costs go down a lot. And because it's out of wood you can install anithing you want a lot easier than in a glas tank, because you can drill holes into it etc. So for a big tank thats like 150cm x 80cm x80cm with glasfront you spend around 50 to 100€. If you have any questions on how to build it you can ask me or just watch youtube videos like I did :D
Get a ball python normally if it isnt a fancy morph they arent that expensive and the setup doesnt have to be that complicated just a few hides water bowl and a substrate and heating equipment. My ball python is a normal and for just the snake it was £65 english pounds and the setup was 130 english pounds
I don't even have snakes yet cause it is illegal in my country but I'm keeping all this information for when I get my animals, and also because I'll be studying biology and I want to make sure I have a good amount of information for when I get to the zoology semester and when I specialize in herpentology
Life hack for getting lights(not bulbs) and enclosures. Use Facebook marketplace bc you can find supplies for SUPER cheap! I got my geckos enclosure for 20 bucks but sometimes you can even get them for free
To be honest its amazing how little it costs especially when people with me have given snakes to re home we just got new enclosures for them and the food for the snakes isn’t all that expensive a dog or a cat needs food every day 2-3 times a day a snake is 1 mouse or chick every 10 - 12 days
How many mice would you recommend buying at one time? Like, when ordering online, specifically for a young/baby ball python that's still growing. Also, what are some of the best places to get/order mice/rats? Thanks!
on the tub part i dont know what kinda tubsy our getting but a small one that can only fit 2 small shoes coast 30 to 50 bucks hereand i live in the usa
Do the under tank heating pads burn things? I know its a stupid question but will it cause a fire hazard if I put it on carpet? Or wood? I watched the tank set up video and I still dont quite understand. I understand where it gets placed, but will it damage anything or cause any risks?
Mice are cheaper than rats but rats are supposedly healthier with better fat and protein content. And adult mouse is about the same size as a rat pup so even baby ball pythons can start eating rats. If you go to expos I suggest buying the rats in bulk. Feeder source is at all Repticon shows and have a good price for frozen feeders. You can also order in bulk online too
Everyone here, if you want to keep your budget cheap, try going on kijiji or craigslist. You can find so many aquariums and supplies for snakes there for garage sale prices(you can also adopt/buy animals on there too). I buy most of my supplies considering reptile supplies are very expensive. It's also better to go on kijiji or craigslist to buy your animals rather then going to a store. Because you're giving a reptile that hasn't got a home, a home
I got my viv and stuff 2nd hand or on sale, the setup cost in total £50 and that included everything (45x45 exo terra viv, with bg, heat mat, thermostat, etc,) I have a hamster that uses the same type of substrate so the substrate is essentially free, or about £10 every 3 months. The food is £5 per month, and the snake itsself (corn) was £40. Overall, under £100 for starting fees, and about £5-£10 per month for upkeep. This is in GBP £ not USD $, but even in USD that's still fairly cheap. The money saved will be put to getting a new, larger viv when the snake grows up. IMO, next to hamsters, they're the cheapest pets to keep.
I have a corn snake who we got from a close friend after she realised she couldn’t keep a snake and she wanted him to go to trusting owners. When we got him he was in a tray and we were old that was what they were meant to be in. It worked well until my cat knocked it off of the side and opened the lid causing the snake to escape. I would say if you have any other pets, particularly cats which are known for knocking things for the fun of it, get a tank or put your plastic box in a hard to reach place for the cat. Tanks are heavier and stay in place meaning the cat cannot move it.
If you use a heat lamp do you put it on one side to have a warm side, if you get one that doesn't have light going out do you keep it on 24/7 or just during the day or night? If I have a heat lamp and need to turn it off during the night or day won't they get cold? If my future pet ball python is in it's hide during the day will the heat lamp hit them so they can be warm?
