How much does it cost to run an Azure Virtual Machine?
Creating and running a Cloud PC in Azure is a great way to build a test environment, a learning sandbox, or even a system you can use for basic daily work - but, how much does it cost?
I ran an Azure Virtual PC running Windows 11, Microsoft Office, Adobe Photoshop, and Acrobat. A simple system that I ran between 10-12 hours a day. What was my cost? Watch this video for the details and actual data from my system.

I have an iPad Pro and I use that most of the time for sending emails and basic office/productivity tasks. And I also have an Azure VM setup (running Windows 11 as well) that I use occasionally (around 30-40 hours each month) when I need to do more demanding office tasks (like using advanced Excel tables, multitasking on an external monitor etc.). And I end up paying around 10 euros per month for my VM. In order to have such low costs its important that you shut down your VM when you are not using it. It’s not just shutting down the VM, you need to go into the Azure Portal and ensure that it is “deallocated”. Only then you don’t get charged for the VM. But you will have running costs for Storage. And to reduce the costs there, choose a HDD over SSD. And in my opinion, using a normal HDD is more than enough for basic productivity/office usage. Hope this information helps.

This is how I use mine, I can create on my PC which is fast enough, but when I need to render animations, I use the vm and then deallocate.

Can the deallocation be scheduled same as the shut down? Thinking of creating one VM to go through some certification training that needs to be on Windows, but from the commodity of my iMac.

I see the appeal if you just need something that you use some hours a month crunching some big numbers (assuming pay as you go is paid per hour). Buying a comparable computer might be much more expensive. I am having some trouble seeing why you would want their budget subscription services unless you travel a lot (Chromebook?). Buying a mini PC would probably be cheaper.

I’m probably one of the few ones who gets it. I have scoliosis and have to move around a lot because of my job. I literally cannot bring 3 devices with me all the fking time ( a personal laptop for learning and my second job, primary work-issued laptop, and ipad for entertainment). I do have a properly speced personal laptop at home but I end up not using it because of the mobility issue, making it less useful/arguably as expensive as a VM due to cost-per-usage. Really appreciate your videos about this! I’m considering azure or windows 365 for my next 2-month work assignment. I’ll have to view your other videos to see if this will work out on a regular 8th gen iPad and the internet connection speed needed. Oracle cloud gives you a VM with 4 ARM cpu cores, 24gb ram and 200gb storage for free forever (until they change their policy). Search for "free oracle cloud 'in RU-vid. For casual use of windows, I think, a mini pc is more economic than an Azure vm: a mini pc with an Intel N5105 cpu, 16gb ram, 500gb ssd, supporting 2 4k monitors is about $220 on Amazon US.

Let's face it. Accessing a remote machine using an iPad or iPhone is not really convenient. So you still have to purchase a computer with decent screen in order to do any real work or anything else. The cheapest desktop can be bought second hand, but a cloud virtual machine will not replace the fact that one also needs a computer at home. So why spending extra money for a cloud virtual machine if anything can be done on the home computer, which more often will be more powerful anyway? I can see the use of a virtual machine on the cloud for companies in need of a server or development machine for their users and for a limited amount of time. Remember to switch off you cloud virtual machine otherwise the billing counter keeps running! $2/day roughly is enough to buy a basic desktop or laptop with one year ROI. Maybe I just don't get all that fuss about cloud services for personal use. However, great video, thank you.

The primary audience for this video are students needing resources to do labs. Very often Mac users that need a Windows machine - in my case, students that need to run Windows-only analytic software for 3-6 hours a week. They often ask if they need to purchase a new computer for these studies - this video shows them an alternative. For many of them, they have great skills - but buying a used computer, configuration, maintenance is not a good use of their time.

There are a couple answers: The cost of the license for the OS is built into the cost of the service for many of the selections. Thanks for the video. I am evaluating options for my non-profit that is accessible from anywhere in the world to do the accounting, sync contacts, calendars, and schedules since there really is no home base. We have our own bare-metal ESXi infrastructure of servers that I could put it on but it's another consideration when we make changes in that environment for business server purposes and at that $9.00/mo., and for something used only 2-3 hours a day, and they set it up, I can't frog around for that. Nobody is a gamer and our plenty good old Photoshop version and video editing if you don't care about rocket performance is fine. It wouldn't cost much to try to see whether or no it drives us nuts. My reservation is privacy. There are kids pictures, personal information, correspondence, supporter anonymity, etc. I've seen enough over the past several years to know even when you are paying for services they will sell private information to marketing profilers for a pack of cigarettes, and are under the thumb of every 3-letter organization in the country where the information is also used by corrupt leaders for nefarious purposes against the ethical for opposing their agenda.

For a more permanent (always on) system that isn’t for lab work and experiments- you may want to look at something like Windows365. It seems more aligned to your use-case. Windows365 wasn’t available when I made this video, and it more of a hosted Cloud computer. For privacy and such. It’s never a simple question. On the one hand, having everything on a personal system “seems” better - until that system is stolen, lost, crashes, or is compromised. Then, putting data on an external system seems that you are trusting a third party to protect it and maintain your privacy - which you are - trusting them. A compromise is to use the Cloud, but encrypt the most sensitive data. (I have a video on AZCrypt as well). My experience has been that 100% safety and security is likely not achievable - but 99% is. After all, a corrupt employee with access to sensitive data is probably the most likely area of a security breach. Windows365 is more than $9 a month though. An Azure VM won’t be as easy to manage I’m terms of persistent data/access (you have to ensure you shut it down when not in use to save money). So it’s not too easy to give you a perfect answer - but I hope I’ve at least given you some options to explore for your specific needs.

Note: if you want to run the VM through RDP - then that client also has to be available for your chosen device - which it is widely available

How can you run a system with 4GB with heavy duty application development for JEE with threading, Message Queues, does not really help serious developers who run multiple application servers? This cost analysis does not help developers.

Think more about the Test phase or demo phase of development. Most devs will have dedicated systems - and often need those. The analysis here is general use - or casual use. There are some other cool Dev aspects with Cloud system though - it’s worth taking a look.

@@LearningandTechnology Perfect. Yes most of the development activity is testing centric and it makes a lot of sense to have it on Azure cloud than buying a big fat server.

I got a quote of £800 / month (about $1000 /month) for Azure 120 CPU cores for research purposes. Is that reasonable?
@LearningandTechnology
@LearningandTechnology 2 года назад
120 cores is quite a powerful system indeed. You’d certainly need to do an ROI for your own specifics, but research is an area where the elasticity of Cloud services can be well-managed. You don’t run the systems 24x7x365 and there is the ability to scale up and down on a demand basis.

Does the VM gives you a virus free environment, so you don't need to have a third party virus scanner ? And how does the cost compare to other VM providers, is Azure cheaper or does it provide more options ? I like the idea to travel with a cheap Chromebook, but still being able to access a VM with the newest specs from every in the world. You never have to worry about your expensive Apple or Dell laptop getting stolen.

Hi! I'm actually a student and I tried to set up an azure vm after watching this video. It had a checkbook about having a license? I didn't have a license and it said it'd cost like $135.
@LearningandTechnology
@LearningandTechnology Год назад
That’s way too much - there are a couple of things to consider. 1) you want to make sure you don’t over spec the system. You don’t require a powerful VM for most things 2) you won’t be running the system 24x7 - you save a lot by managing it well. For example, if you only ran it 40 hours a week it would drastically reduce the cost 3) check with your school. If they have Azure for Education then you will get licenses and Azure credits in many cases.
@Bhadsha
@Bhadsha Год назад
@Learning and Technology with Frank yes I have the azure for education. I mean the windows license is 135, as in the license to use windows. I can use something like Ubuntu, but that's more for coding and I'm looking for a desktop in a way. The vm itself is like 8 cents an hour
@LearningandTechnology
@LearningandTechnology Год назад
@@Bhadsha if you have Azure for Education then you have a license. Under “software” select the OS version you want and then “get key”. There are also a lot of always free resources for you. Including VMs.
@Bhadsha
@Bhadsha Год назад
@Learning and Technology with Frank Yes, I am aware and have used several of them. I selected Windows 10 pro but I don't see it's license. If you try to create a vm with windows 10, you'll see a checkbox at the bottom that asks you to confirm "I confirm I have an eligible Windows 10/11 license with multi-tenant hosting rights.". That's the bit I'm confused on as I don't have the license. Also thanks for your help it really means a lot.
@LearningandTechnology
@LearningandTechnology Год назад
@@Bhadsha no worries - your license should allow you to select that box. The idea is that the educational licenses are for education - so if you are using Azure to learn and teach then that is a valid section. Your cost concerns me - it should be nowhere near $135 - check to make sure you aren’t creating a machine that’s too powerful and make sure to turn it off when not in use. Plus - use some of the free resources too!

Generally, you won’t be running the system 24x7 Not sure if you caught that in the video. It’s compute demand - not compute 24x7
@Schlumbucketreturns
@Schlumbucketreturns 6 месяцев назад
@@LearningandTechnology Yeah, but if you run any type of business software that needs to send or receive data 24/7, then the cost would be rather high using the "pay for usage" model. I have an Amazon Windows remote desktop for about $40/month that would be a better deal.
@LearningandTechnology
@LearningandTechnology 6 месяцев назад
@@Schlumbucketreturns generally, if you have a business that needs 24x7 compute then you wouldn’t run it on a VM. That’s a bit more complex and gets into DevOps and the complexities around doing full TOC on a Cloud Solution. Usually, we’ll see a mix of hybrid solutions with Cloud being quite dominant these days. For VMs - the best use-case I tend to see is for testing. Limited compute, labs, clean VM, etc

Actually - I think Bias and the inability to think critically rules the world. People bring bias into their thoughts and do not evolve. This is especially true in subcultures that have reenforcement loops - which is why social media is problematic - it creates cultures of reenforcement. Some examples: people that protested The move from mainframe to client/server - And, more recently, those that rebel against cloud computing without providing rational analysis.
