It's time to share how much the Great Loop is costing us! It is a question we wanted to know when we started out, so when we kicked off the Loop in Key West we recorded every expense. We share the total march expense as well as our feelings from one month on the Loop for our second attempt!

ABOUT US
Hi! We are high school sweethearts from Atlanta, Georgia who decided to take a year off to travel around the world. Together we decided to create vlogs for our journey as a fun way to remember it. On September 15, 2019, we left Atlanta with 3 bags, 2 one-way tickets, and 1 goal of traveling for a whole year. Little did we know, 6 months later we would find ourselves in a nationwide lockdown in India. After spending 5 months in India, we came back to the United States and decided to purchase a 34’ Trawler, dive headfirst into boat life, and kick-off America’s Great Loop.
The good, the bad, the ugly - and most importantly, the real and real funny. We’re not here to tell you “how it’s done.”, just how we’ve done it. And that whatever it is that’s calling you - the way you’ll do it is much more attainable than it may seem.

Only halfway through, but Jen, you hit it on the head with the student comment. You’re more comfortable, but learning constantly. Even after flying professionally as long as I have, I still keep myself open to learn. Mother Nature has her way of keeping us on our toes. If you ever feel like you aren’t learning anything out there, be wary, as you will find a whole new lesson to be taught when you least expect it. Love the fact that you two are being so transparent about your endeavor. I have no doubt in my mind, if I am able to embark on the same adventure when I retire, that I will reference back to these vids as a reference. Safe travels!

Glad to see a monthly budget, it does give lots of info that otherwise people will just have to experience. I notice you do cook more than others and was wondering if your propane supply might hold out. Restaurant food does seem all the same and nothing beats a good home cooked meal. Hope you all continued success. Enjoy

Thanks so much Buck! We have 2 small marine propane tanks onboard and each one lasts us 3 weeks to 1 month. Only in the upper Keys for our work months did we have challenges finding propane and since then there's normally been a stop relatively close to an anchorage or marina. I've seen some boaters use the Blue Rhino or similar brand and those would be definitely be easier to refill, however, our propane enclosure is not made for that large of tanks. Cheers!

You guys have done this the best way as far as being comfortable and saving money. It’s cheaper to stay at a marina than larger boats having 1 engine cost so much less to maintain less oil filters than having 2 engines not to mention saving fuel by only running 1 engine

That’s so awesome I’ve had a few boats but not a cabin cruiser to live on , at 62 do you think I might be starting a little late in life for a 40ft boat money wise no problem how to handle smaller boats 22’and 24’ speed boats no problem more worried about age and that kind of stuff ,looking for a boat now thanks for look into the loop 🙏🏼🇺🇸👮‍♀️🇺🇸🙏🏼🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

Definitely not too late to start at 62, you still have many good times ahead of you! We met some 70 year olds on the Loop and even an 84 year old! The 80 year old had a partner to help but was still out there having fun. Good luck!!

Your expenses for the month weren't too bad. If I was to do the loop, I would do it as you two are doing it....to save...but to have fun at some of the stops.

How much does a mooring ball cost per night in SC and is it about the same elsewhere? How do you find one on your loop trip?

If I recall correctly, in Beaufort it was roughly $40 a night and you book on Dockwa. We typically just searched through the Navionics boating app and reviewed Marinas near our destination to see if they had moorings. Cheers

Why do you guys say that you “have to keep moving on the great loop?” Is this true for everyone? Or just due to your own schedule? Thanks guys!!

It is true for everyone trying to complete the loop at one time. This is because the Loop is done by the seasons, Spring on the East Coast, Summer in Canada and the Great Lakes, Fall in the Mid-West Rivers, and Winter in Florida / the Bahamas. Their are a few benchmarks, like "the bay by may" which is reaching the Chesapeake Bay by May. And then a you want to be off Lake Michigan and into Chicago by October at the very latest, a lot of cruisers shoot for Labor Day. This is because of weather and many facilities shut down. Cheers!

@@SchoandJo he's an interesting mix based on genetic testing. He's majority Chihuahua. Second is mini pinscher. Somewhere in there is Pomeranian poodle shih Tzu and 6% super mut. But he's smart. He's a great boat dog. He can hold his water for nearly a day. That's what makes him a good boat dog and of course he's cuddly like Ollie

How long are your hot showers?

Depends on how close we are to a re-fill of our water tanks 😁 A long time until we re-fill, maybe we just run the hot water for 20s, suds, 20s rinse. So possibly a minute? If we refill the next day or we are at the marina, then maybe a 2 minute shower 😁

Did you watch the video Shane? At 1:53 we said what our expense was for our entire first month on the Loop - 2,229.88. Yes, it's no surprise we do want you to go to our website too which is why we put even more information there including an itemized breakdown.
