How much do I NEED? All of it!!! I do think we all feel like we should have more. My gold and silver goal has evolved. At first, it was 1 year's salary for myself. Then, it was 1 year salary for myself and my wife. Now that we have 2 kids, I'd like to be able to at least pay off my mortgage from gold, if it were ever needed, as well as have some to give to my kids. To summarize, I don't think there's a hard set number, because life keeps moving the goal posts.

Honest question here... if you had enough gold to pay off your mortgage, and given that part of your mortgage payments go to interest and are considered unrecoverable costs, wouldn't it be better to pay it off and then use what would've been your monthly mortgage payments to buy more gold? I guess the question here is do you think that gold will appreciate at a higher rate than the interest on your home.

Goals are nice to keep the excitement. Small incremental accumulation has already surprised me when I look at my stack over the last few years. I don’t think I have an upper limit. If I don’t need it, then that means everything else I am doing worked or no major catastrophe happens. At the end, it gets passed down and helps them add to their stack if they choose. Not enough people prepare for hard times. I hope they don’t come, but knowing if/when it does is as cloudy as the spot price predictions. Thanks for another down to earth video.

I also think a good goal is to have one year’s income in gold. Also, 3% to 5% of net worth in gold seems reasonable. The idea of selling off an ounce every so often in retirement - as a supplement to other income sources holds great appeal

A gold reserve of one ounce per month that I could reasonably expect to be without income. I have managed multiple such times in the past without any PM to fall back on, so it's not something I stress over. Currently I'm very silver heavy, although my PM could see me through this year if necessary. So yes, I do need more gold. My long term goal is around a kilo. I'm aiming for another 1.6 ounces this year, with a 1/10th ozt (first and only) to be ordered this weekend.

It’s almost like asking how much savings do I need? I have many years before retirement, so I don’t see any end in sight. I have a separate bank account where 15% of my weekly pay goes toward a gold/silver fund. Sometimes it just accrues when I don’t like how prices have moved, and so I wait. When I get a bump in pay, my contribution to the gold fund increases accordingly. In addition to savings & wealth preservation, gold is like a hobby for me. Due to the vast selection of bullion & coins out there, I don’t have any set quantity to where I’d be content with moving onto something else!

My goal which i'm not close to yet is to have a years worth of expenses (food, shelter, healthcare, autos) in a mix of silver and gold. I'm finding it harder to stack silver because of the premiums right now. I just can't pull the trigger on a 30 percent premium over spot even though I know I'm dollar cost averaging as it goes up and down. Fractional gold is more 'affordable' than silver but it's not in stock. Tough times to stack when you also want to get your moneys worth. I used to buy weekly, now it's down to about once a month but constantly on the lookout for a deal on a quarter or half ounce gold coin.

5-10% of portfolio in precious metals. Use a physical trust like CEF to dollar cost average each month and when you have enough, sell the shares and use the proceeds to buy physical to lower premiums with a larger purchase. This allows you to save smaller amounts without missing out on any gains/price increases while you wait. Yes you pay capital gains, but if you have a smaller income it allows you to not get destroyed by premiums.

Ratios are important in life. Relative to current monetary policy, gold isn't really even running yet, imho. If I feel like things are risky, I move my weighting above the 15% of assets to maybe 30%. I would sell a portion of my gold if it pulls back excessively in a short period. I am primarily looking at gold as a hedge and a bridge account for letting other assets (401k/Roth's)compound in the last few years of retirement. 10% of a million or several million starts to really add up in those last few years if you have the cash to be able to let the compounding marinate. I view the gold in that way as cash/equivalents, but shinier. LOL

For me 5oz is a sweet spot. Ideally ill make at least one gold purchase a month and a lil more if like you mentioned a bonus or some other bit of luck were to come along indefinitely... my most recent gold purchase was thwarted because what i wanted(1/4oz britannia) wasn’t available so in an effort to avoid another 1/10 gold piece which i think are kind of ridiculous i picked up a 2.5 peso.... anyways my goal currently is 5ozs of gold comprised of 1/4s and halves because that seems like a amount that may facilitate the puchase of land or an emergency, it also feels like a great amount to weather another downturn at leadt for my lifestyle I believe i could ride 10k out pretty good... in the mean time ill kerp buying the cheap mexican pieces to increase my stack with the goal of them being purely numismatic in the future when eagles and britanias are attainable and affordable

I'll get to a kilo - eventually - if the prices doesn't suddenly sky rocket. Been stacking since 2012 and I'm half there at 502.2 gram bullion grade gold. But there was a pretty silent period as I used money on moving to a house but now I'm stacking again. I have a Britannia on the way not included in the 502 gram and I got some scrap gold that I can sell and almost get an oz for so that I'll do soon. So one oz just round the corner and one more around the next. By then if including some higher quality jewelry I'm past 600 gram. Now the hard part do decide which coin. The 1 oz coins I've got so far are all Krugerrands. But I also want to get some 24K so the Britannia is a natural since it has more or less same dimensions so can use same storage. Another of approx same size is the Bufallo but it has exorbitant premiums. My dealer hasn't got Britannias yet (thinking about it) and really it's a hassle to order online and the proofs of address and so on they want is just about impossible to make them satishfied - do they want to sell me a coin or not!! Then there's Philharmonics and Maples. Both different sizes. Most likely I'll go with Maples for my 2nd size full oz coin. Philharmics are IMHO on the big side and still hasn't got new security features - even Krugerrands has "modern" security features these days - since 2017 and they're even smaller in the 2021 version(!) So that'll probably be my stacking strategy for 1 oz coins. "Krugerrand size" or Maple. Preferably new coins with the modern features and since I already got some 22K the next should preferably be 24K unless my dealer has the new Eagle and I somehow fall in love with it (but even the older Eagles has very high premiums which you here don't regain when selling - at least not to a dealer). For fractional it's quite anbother picture. Here vintage and "modern vintage" (like Sovereign and Ducat) dominates as many are bought private and has great premiums. Most modern bullion in 1/4 oz which IMHO is the perfect fractional size is IMHO just too high. Sure you might get a little of the premium back when selling - or it may be a different time when that time comes - so for fractionals I'll hunt deals where others have already taken the premium loss and I get them cheap.

Oz of gold equal to your age in years, and oz of silver equal to your weight in pounds. Example by the time you are 40 years old and let’s say 170 lbs, you would need 40 oz gold and 2400 oz silver. That works out to a 1:60 gold to silver ratio at that age and weight

Totally arbitrary, but in general 10 ounces of gold seems like a good number to be able to spend a few ounces during an emergency while keeping a few for the future. Preferably in fractional ounces of pure .999 fine gold for the divisibility. I decided to go with fractional gold eagles (which I know aren’t 24k gold) because of their demand in the US. I’ll continue the scheduled buying each month and am saving separately to pick up two 1 oz. Buffalos during the summer. Goal is 5-6 oz. by year’s end. 👊 (Buffalo tube in a decade or bust!)

Agree with CB on the first part, 5-10% of net worth is good allocation, which would be a combination of both physical and paper gold. However I believe one shouldn’t put all of their eggs in one basket so to speak. There are other ways to diversify risk and maintain wealth (eg real estate and blue chip stocks). Or course if a person believes in end of world scenarios, no amount of gold (or any asset class for that matter) would be sufficient.

Five ounces of silver and one tenth ounce of gold per month of retirement. 300 months (25 years) means 1500 ounces of silver and 30 ounces of gold. I am retired unexpectedly and still stacking. But I have met my goals. And I'm having fun! I'm 2/3 in Eagles, 1/3 Buffs and Maples and a Roo and one big bar. If things keep going steady, living beneath my means, I will continue to stack. Less months to finance, more metal. But I am also collecting other things, like bourbon and firearms. Things that might get better with age. You want unsolicited advice from a happy old fart? @mth4849
@mth4849 3 года назад
No way to come up with a one-size-fits-all number of course. I do believe there are unusual situations that can effect gold holdings other than a personally determined ratio to net wealth. In past years I purchased quite a bit of gold on eBay. The then advantages of high eBayBucks levels, Microsoft bribes to promote the use of Live and Bing, using discounted gift cards, CC rebates, and portal rebates, all combined at different times to allow me to purchase 1 oz gold bullion at a net cost well below spot - as much as $130 at times. I easily achieved the ratio I felt was good for me (us). Then I just continued to buy thinking it was too good to pass up. I even borrowed to buy gold at these prices. My ratio became much higher than I ever anticipated but I am reluctant to pare it back mainly because I have no better places to put it (our IRAs are full with basic and boring index ETFs).

I suspect a lot of stackers are like me, hesitant to disclose how much gold (and silver) we have acquired, either in writing or in videos showing our stack. When I started off 8 years ago, I was happy to upload all my unboxing videos and view others. As it mounted up, I got concerned about the security aspect (prying eyes of UK government departments and/or would be criminals able to identify me somehow and the risk of its theft - not coverable by insurance) so withdrew them. Flying in the face of that, I will say that my gold ounce figure is into 3 digits, 30 oz of that bought with Bitcoin profits, so I know I am very fortunate indeed. Otherwise, by converting cash from life savings. Being mid-70's, I know I will never realise all its value, it being got mainly with offspring in mind, but I just love to see and hold such beautiful coins of different designs in those various coloured gold tones. The way things are going in this world, perhaps a more relevant question might be - "How much of my gold (and silver, etc) am I going to be able to hold and actually spend in the future?". Just as with the 1933 US Gold Confiscation Order, tptb can do exactly what they want to try and steal our hard-earned real wealth when they seek to have everyone forced to use their fiat cryptos. I hope that never happens - or a lot will be "lost".

Well, I’m planning on relocating back to my home country in Africa and building a homestead on several acres of land. Since a homestead is used for things such as producing food, harvesting water, raising livestock etc, the majority of my everyday needs would be met so I wouldn’t need to sell my gold for daily sustenance. I would probably keep enough gold to pay any property taxes on my estates for the rest of my life. So that if for whatever reason i run out of fiat, i dont have to worry about the government taking my land. Right now it’s about (.5%)of the value of the residential property per year, which isn’t much at all. So let’s say on a $100,000 property, I would be paying about $500 a year. So for 10 years I would pay $5000. For a hundred years, I would pay $50,000. I’m in my early 40’s, so I’m probably not gonna live another 100 years. Maybe half of that. So if I had $50,000 worth of gold, which at today’s prices is roughly 25 ounces, it would be more than enough. Not to mention the price of an ounce will very likely appreciate over time. Even if they hiked up the taxes which they will probably do at some point, it would still be plenty. And that doesnt include my silver and platinum stash. So yeah, not saying 25 ounces is all I would take with me, but that 25 would probably be enough for my particular situation. So a kilo of gold sounds about right. 👍🏾

As you say it's a question with many answers, I figure someone could live a normal life with basic expenses covered in the UK on 1 oz a month if converting it to fiat £ (not in all parts of the UK but in plenty of places that are nice enough) if you're living cheaply in a cheaper area or maybe a couple then you could live for less on a per person basis. If you're debt free and paid your home off then maybe this number could be 1 oz for 2 months maybe even for 2 people. Living with a super car and a big home loan with a family of 6 then maybe 10 oz a month wouldn't touch the sides. 12 oz to cover a year sounds good to me for many people, 3 oz for an emergency is a good shout. I would say you only ever need 1 year's worth of gold equivalent to a yearly salary/income. In America, that'll be $57,456 on average, so about 30 oz. BUT that isn't everyone's situation AND it should be a number to work toward, not to buy all at once. I don't agree with you saying one would need unlimited gold if those scenarios come to pass, just enough to be on the run long enough for the news to fade away and for you to start your life again if you only had the gold. Where I'm at, the average income is $31,933 so while I would like a 1 kilo bar of Gold, I think anything spent over 17 oz is unnecessary and the money is better used for other investments or savings.

Backyard bullion has a point, perhaps when you're 50 that's about time to stop the stacking, you won't be watching the value increase probably nearly as much after that age. I have no idea how much I want to Stack, I just know I want perhaps more invested in that, than in fiat savings.

@@2is1gold it seems like he said he's going to slow down or stop at about that age. I might consider seriously slowing down around that time in my life depending on how quickly the value continues to rise, I hear people say you probably want to hold on to it for 20 to 30 years at least, but it's impossible to know what the Market's going to do. But it's a good point he mentions.

Average life expectancy these days is about 80, so that still gives about 30 years (🤞). In any case, it’s more about protecting your savings from erosion rather than investing for the long-term future.

I'm down for this topic: like you, I'm a small-business owner - I run a communications and information technology firm. I've been an active stock market investor since 1998, and, while I've always used goldminers as a hedge in my portfolios, I didn't start stacking physical bullion until the past few years. For me, I don't set a hard-and-fast rule to the amount of bullion I hold. Instead, I use a percentage target of my net worth. I target holding around 10% of my net worth in physical bullion. I hold about 60/40 gold to silver. I look at gold as my a permanent store-of-wealth and my silver as more as a savings account - since silver is volatile, if its value skyrockets, I can easily move a few ounces of silver without dramatically reducing my exposure, while I look at gold as something I never intend to sell unless it's an absolute emergency and I have no choice. I hold physical gold and silver bullion as both stores of wealth and also a protection against the (unlikely) potential of a bank holiday or bank run. In my stock market accounts, I target 10-20% for goldminers and silver miners, typically the ETFs in order to avoid any single-stock risk (particularly since I use gold as a hedge more than an investment like the stocks I hold in individual companies). Why invest in the miners and not the straight gold and silver ETFs? Two reasons: first, the miners offer a YIELD in the form of dividends, something that the metals ETFs do not. Second, I'm not a conspiracy theorist, but I've heard more than enough about the manipulation of paper gold and silver to know I don't want that kind of exposure. Finally, I also hold cryptocurrency. I'm not a Bitcoiner nor am I a goldbug. I diversify because crypto and gold both serve as a hedge against inflation and money-printing, however, by holding both, they are a hedge against EACH OTHER. If Bitcoin goes to zero, I always have my gold. If we figure out how to mine asteroids and dramatically reduce the value of precious metals, I always have my crypto. Anyway, that's my rationale. I don't hold precious metals or crypto for the end-of-the-world, I hold them as part of a well-balanced breakfast... *ahem*... a well-balanced portfolio. Plus, as you demonstrate in your videos, holding the physical bullion has the added benefit of being fun to hold and stare at... for HOURS. As always, thank you for your awesome videos! The calm nature of them makes them a great way for me to relax throughout the day. :)

It looks like we think pretty similarly. I don't know if I'll get to 10%, but my targets have been increasing over the last few years. Thanks for the comment!

@@sirrathersplendid4825 I 100% agree with you, however, I always plan for the most extreme possibility. Elon Musk believes we’ll be able to send an investigative trip to an asteroid with quintillion dollars worth of gold in the 2022. Do I think that’s possible? No, but I also didn’t think we’d ever elect a poorly-qualified reality television star to the White House, so, yes, I continue to plan for any contingency.

@@GetIrked - After a B-list actor (Ronald Reagan) was elected I began to believe anything was possible (lol). And then came Schwarzenegger! First I’ve heard about Elon Musk’s 2022 plan. Then again the guy thinks something as daft as Hyperloop could be viable in earthquake-prone California! But you’re right, always best to keep an open mind. @@sirrathersplendid4825I’m not sure how much Musk would have to pay me to get shot in a small ball at hundreds of miles an hour through a gerbil maze buried underground in earthquake-prone territory and call it “transportation” and not “hold my beer and watch how I terrify/splatter people into oblivion.” I invest in gold because even my sugar-infused, over-caffeinated imagination cannot perceive the craziness reality comes up with on a daily basis. 😆
