Very powerful presentation. You have highlighted the urgent need to have ethics and values in governance and leadership in all sectors. Brain drain drains the country. Scientists, engineers and medical experts have been lost to other countries. Country needs brain at the top. Zviri kurwadza kani. In monetary terms this brain drain runs into billions. A country cant be run by riot police only. No ways. Waita King Ndoro. Your content is very motivating. Hope these politicians vanoonawo chingavabatsire. Zimbabweans vatambura veduwe. King Ndoro, thanks for a brilliant piece of analysis on the Zimbabwe brain drain. I'm not a political activist, but you seem to place some hope in the 2023 elections as if a change in political power will lead to the prosperity of Zimbabwe. Zimbabwe has major structural issues, some of which you highlighted in the Dairiboard CEO. Putting aside western political interference for a moment and just focusing on Zimbabwean issues. I have a PhD student who researched the manufacturing sector's collapse in Bulawayo from 1985 to 2015. Out of the 200 companies that were part of the research, 90% of them that collapsed had a CEO who was a Chartered Accountant. The companies that thrived and managed to survive through ESAP and other disastrous economic policy initiatives were headed by Engineers. For example, the famous Eric Block from Bulawayo, a CA and self-taught Economist, was on the board of the 63 companies that collapsed. I'm not by any means trying to blame the collapse of the manufacturing hub in Bulawayo on CA's. Several economic factors were at play. The point is that Zimbabwe has too many unexamined factors, which resulted in the brain drain, one of the critical ones was corporate leadership. We still have a lot of work to do to recognise the right talent for the job and reward them accordingly. A lot of the brain drain can be attributed to a lack of corporate recognition and monetary incentives without considering the economic environment. The outcome of the 2023 elections will not fix these underlying issues because companies are still run by people from all political divides. Zimbabwe has chronic leadership challenges in every sector. From corporates to Churches and our Government. We all must reflect on the cause of this self-sabotaging spirit that manifests in everything we do. Whether selecting the right leadership in politics, business, sport etc., we never seem to get it right. We applaud our resilience to economic turmoil and boast about our ability to adapt and make a plan. Are we not the Masters of our own demise? Ultimately, you have to leave Zim to escape this mentality.

Trying to quantify the cost of brain drain on Zim is tough one. I'd proffer, as alluded to at the beginning of the episode, looking at the value addition/creation made by our people outside of Zim. Though not a fair apples to apples comparison, it would in some sense show the opportunity cost

This is crazy because the dairibord example hit home. I know someone who actually left dairibord and went to Kenya. Ever since they have risen so much and are doing extremely well. People struggling and working extra hard in Zimbabwe leave and work with the same ethic but the fruit of the labour is 10000 fold which is actual insanity.

@@kingkandoro Greener colder "racist" pastures. Four Zimbabweans in your line up made it in the USA, I'd want to believe their qualifications and good work ethic got them to where they are. The USA gave them their opportunity to succeed, as you rightly pointed out, our own country of Zimbabwe stifles opportunity and success unless you are part of the corrupt patronage system. I think as Africans we should not buy into the divisive American liberal woke ideology of victimhood. Anyway thats just my humble opinion. I still enjoy your humour and 99% of your content is on point.
@kingkandoro
@kingkandoro 2 года назад
My brother, I appreciate you bringing this up. But I don’t the first world being racist is a matter of opinion at this point . As it stands there’s countless lawsuits going on about systemic racism in most of these countries. These are not my opinions. The fact that our bothers and sisters have made it in their fields despite these things is not evidence of dissipating racism, it’s more to do with individual brilliance that has made these people indispensable in their fields. Stephanie Travers’s boss, Lewis Hamilton an 8 time world champion still suffers from racism til this EVERYDAY. So many things can be true at once my brother. The Uk, and the USA can be lands of opportunity and still be racist at the same time. That’s because at the end of the day, all the care about is THEIR bottom line.

My issue with the brain drain is that people deciding to go elsewhere can be good, but, like you addressed in this video; how conducive is that environment for those who have left to come back and invest into their communities? Into their country? I am sure they would love to open up academies, set up foundations, scholarships... programs.... let's not even talk about infrastructure and just the modernisation of the country as a whole? Inini? Not bitter at all. 😅
