Great video thanks for sharing this info 😃! Some feedback as a purchaser - I missed out on the quotes edition and was hesitant on buying any other version as the quote one was the one I really wanted. I wonder if more would have sold initially if they were all quote versions 🧐. Would be interesting to hear other purchasers or potential purchasers feedback on this. For me the value of your quotes outweighs the limited edition concept i.e. I would paid more for your words in the book even if it meant it wasn't a limited edition. Hope that helps and makes sense. I did end up buying the non quote hardback version and it's a beautiful and inspirational work of art.

I love the transparency in your videos. It really helps to connect you with the audience. Showing your mistakes to help others learn from them too is truly amazing. Love the videos, Evan! You've got something special here!

Ever since I found you Evan, you've been a big inspiration to me! Your transparency and guidance from your videos are so helpful. Just recently, I have finished making my first zine/book too see a draft of it and choose to really see how it went. As time went by I was constantly living every moment of my life at a time. Which led to creating a newer body of work that I hope to see a draft of this year. So much work is put into a photobook/as it resonates with the creator itself. Thank you for your hardwork and always love your videos Evan 🙌

I've actually been thinking of doing something like this - mostly for friends and family. A suggestion I got was to combine it with something like the blog I used to do (called it Brain Dumps). Then again, these are the same folks telling me to do a RU-vid channel for the past decade. I don't listen very well. I also appreciate the reality you share on the business end. I see many people who get surprised by the amount of non-creative stuff is involved in being a successful creative.

Thanks for the info and the books are great! I'm getting ready to publish a book as well. Can you do a more in-depth video about this process ie process in choosing a good printing company, your decisions on paper especially when they're not in front of you, possibly print-on-demand vs self fulfillment.

First of all, I bought stops along the way! Love it! Second, I made a photo book and people were interested but not for what I had to charge to make anything so now I’m looking for other ways to make it cheaper but look just as nice.

I want to echo those who praised you for your transparency. You are very unusual and a role model for others on RU-vid. There are two costs you did not mention. First, how much did you spend on boxes/envelopes and postage? Second, what was your labor cost; how many hours in total did you put into the project? Thanks for teaching us so much over the years. You are terrific!

In terms of audience / target market.... I remember hearing something about "having a loyal narrow audience is much more valuable than having a wider, less dedicated fanbase" I am probably butchering it, but I definitely agree... scarcity is an important part of photography.

Copy #209 here! Lol, I love the book and the photos. But what makes them for me and ways is the journey. We watched you take these photos. From beginning to end we were right there with you. And once again we are there with you in the wrap up. I am a firm believer that it shouldn't always be about the money. This can cause you to loose focus and inevitably your passion for your art. However because of the journey and product you are providing here I do believe you could have charged more. You sold far more then a photobook here. You sold memories, an adventure, education, etc. The book was just extra to be honest. Either way love the photos and videos, keep up the good work and enjoy the journey!

I’m about to release my first book and totally stuck on whether I should do online pre order package and an in person release party. Ideally I want BOTH but have no idea what would work. Any ideas? Luckily I have a decent following in my town (which is what the book is on) and always sell out with prints.

i wonder how much did you make in sales percentage from your existing following or brand new people stumbling onto your book via ads (if you ran any ads)? Was it purely for just your social media following, $0 ad budget? Did you boost to existing following on IG/FB?

Regarding the printing - choosing to support a printer from your country helps the overall US economy, so... still the best choice. When you pay a company somewhere else, this cash is going there, and it's probably not going to come back. It may not make a lot of sense for the business owner, but when you think the bigger picture, it makes more sense to do it the way you did.

Well I would say... you are an artist right? Playing the idea of scarcity and speculating over that is more like merchant in bad sense... almost smells by NFT in this.. which i have not good opinion about. Rest ideas are cool and I agree.. like selling package with smaller and bigger margin.

Wow thats shocking really. I am in europe and same as you I do smaller runs of my books. I am releasing the 3rd next month. First is at 309 units, second 200. But it still goes on. I order a few time a year. But I print them for 10 euro per piece. Good paper. Matt finish, hardcover, always about 100 fullcolor pages. You got scammed man. I sell them for 35. So there is like 225% margin there.

@@RanftEvan how the hell did they stuff up the paper my man!? I didn’t want to double post - one thing I noticed in this vid about “leaving money on the table.” When someone buys something they’re exchanging money for value. So it’s dangerous to assume you would have had equal sales if you had the higher price from the beginning. I know my tone is negative Nancy here but that’s not my intention I just want to contribute to the discussion to get people into making books. I’m more likely to use Blurb or MagCloud and have an on-demand print schedule should I ever make one. This was an excellent video mate.
