@@IdefilmsImagine unironically selling meditation, a skill monks have been trying to get everyone to learn for free, for centuries. Truly disgusting when you think about it. First they sold you anxiety, now they're selling you the cure.
Hank is on a different level lol. Most RU-vidrs will avoid talking about their finances because their advertisers will start fixing prices, which in turn will reduce their sponsorship revenue. Having greater notability than most content creators, Hank has more bargaining power with sponsors. ♥
It is, it totally makes clear that actually making money on it is super hard. 40 million views and then 4000, that's such a tiny fraction for instance I will never get to that level.
RU-vid limiting your shorts to 1 minute while being king of long form versus tiktok incentivizing long videos while being king of the swipables feels like the video platform version of that crab evolution meme Edit: it's called "carcinization" for the curious, basically a bunch of different things have all separately evolved into crabs at various points implying crabs are the perfect being evolution wise, this is that but for video hosts
It's like Apple being known for Gaming and Windows for Office, then Apple started leaning heavily into the whole Office thing (both in advertising as well as specs, design and functionality) and now they're desperately trying to circle back with their image lmao Capitalism just makes them all tap into all the markets instead of being happy with monopolising a (not exactly small) niche Though tbf RU-vid has never been nice to long form content, let's plays worked fine for a long time, but long well researched YT essays have never been great monetisation wise.
they're just quite clearly trying to take over the other's strenths. Tiktok is hoping to re-educate the younger generations to only use Tiktok and have them not engage with RU-vid in the first place, while RU-vid feels threatened by the surge of Tiktok and as an established platform, tries to maintain the status quo by providing the features of the competitor, so there's not a need for users to engage with Tiktok. It's as close to a war as businesses get.
I think I just realized why the last moment of many shorts are getting cut off... The creators must be making it a minute and 1 sec for tiktok monetization and cutting that last sec off for RU-vid.
This! I will compliment someone on an item that they have and they'll tell me they got it at the tiktok shop. The rare times that I am on tiktok it definitely has that QVC vibe. That woman that sells all the beads and jewels for nails?😂😂😂
This made me realize I don't use TikTok as TikTok. I always just go to the channels of the creators I like and check what new videos they uploaded, as I would on youtube. Also I don't even use the app, I just watch them on desktop, cause I don't watch videos on my phone.
Same here! I never just scroll on my homepage, I go look up accounts I already know from other platforms or that have had their videos reposted on other platforms that I happened to like and just watch their videos.
I hated RU-vid shorts until someone figured out that they are a really great way to promote their longer videos. Unfortunately a) very few people provide a link in their shorts to the original video, and b) RU-vid makes it difficult to embed a link to the original video in the short of the description.
Yeah, it's like what a weird thing to do, getting me really interested in seeing a video they made and then I'm like "cool, where can I watch it?" and their reply is "iunno lol good luck"
@@Norsilca sorry, by people I was referring to both content creators and audience. The tool everyone wants is there, but not all content creators realize it is, and for those that do... It's still easy for us to miss it right in front of us, and many don't even know to look for it.
I do think there are creators who really use shorts to their advantage. If you just have an idea for a very short joke you can do really fun stuff for a short instead of having to either drag it out or making it bigger than initially intended. But I also never scroll through shorts. I just open my homepage and if I think I'll like a short recommended, I'll open it, watch it and then return to the homepage immediately. That way you can watch everything with intention and don't need to decide when/if to swipe when you don't really like something
I think short form swipable content is honestly a huge issue. I know for me, someone in my late 20s i notice that short form content zones me out in a very creepy way. I can click off a RU-vid video or get off of other SM apps but Shortform content really feels like it hijacks my brain and makes it honestly difficult to click away. I can FEEL the algorithm trying to keep me watching and i think that is going to have longterm effects on human attention spans. I'm pulling this out of my ass. I don't have anything but my own personal experiences and a general understanding of human cognitive development. Very general.
I can scroll for hours and it's shocking to have it happen. Sit down with coffee and my phone BAM two hours gone. It happened a few times and I just had to stop. This month I've been picking up a book instead. Even 10 minutes gives me a little reset and I can go back to my day. The short form content keeps me high strung 🤷♀️ the world doesn't need that
@@ccpippin307 YES. High strung is the best description I've heard so far. I don't have the worst anxiety ever but for some reason the shorts just put me on edge. Like fight or flight kicks in or something. I've gotten a lot better here recently at breaking away after just a few mins but it feels like I have to put a lot of mental effort behind that decision.
@@wonder_platypus8337 good luck! I don't have tiktok, so that one I don't have tips for. I see Reels when I check Facebook, so that app has a 10 minute timer. For RU-vid I just spend time hitting "not interested" for any shorts on my feed. And they mostly stay away until I intentionally watch another short. Not seeing them really helps me, maybe it could help you! The three minutes here or there saves me so much time in the long run.
To solve the 1m vs 1:01 issue, can't you target a 1:01 length video for tiktok, then in post edit the video to speed it up 2% to make it 59s long and upload to RU-vid shorts? Much like how Seinfeld was sped up in syndication to fit more ads in.
We do this it’s just a huge pain the butt. It’s hard to hit a tight target when making off the cuff content and since revenue is so low it’s hard to justify spending time and money on stuff like that, especially if you’re a smaller creator.
It's strange hearing that Tiktok is incentivizing longer content, since most of the complaints I ever hear regarding Tiktok was that the allowed lengths of videos was just... way too long. To be fair, the dialogue surrounding this was still more in terms of comparing it to Vine, and people at the time were largely using it sort of like a successor to Vine, at which it was failing miserably because without the shorter time limit people were dragging jokes out far beyond their entertainment value. But even now I see complaints from people because they are expecting short-form content and don't want creators to treat the app like a second version of RU-vid where they can just host storytimes or vlogs. People talk about how Tiktok is rotting people's attention spans, and to an extent I'm sure it's true, but really, people were largely always unwilling to engage with longer content on Tiktok, probably for the same reason that you wouldn't go on Tumblr to see some model post photos of themselves on vacation. It's just not what you open the app for.
There was definitely a certain point a switch flipped from TikTok being a second Vine to TikTok being an entirely unique thing. And TikTok definitely has the power to change its whole identity again.
Nah. It makes sense. They are just moving the goalposts so they don’t have to pay creators as much. Same with demonetization based on censorship. RU-vid will still run ads on those demonetized videos, the creator just doesn’t get the dough. Then tin foil hat conspiranoids will blame the gubnent instead of the platform.
I like the ten-minute videos when it's a slightly deeper dive into a topic or educational. I don't like the ones where it's just someone taking about their life for ten minutes. I also wish it was easier to see how long a video is upfront because there are times when I'm there for the shorter ones, and it's helpful to know what I'm in for. It's definitely contributed to my attention rotting a bit, though.
Fascinating to see what's going on with other social media platforms & how monetisation works, thanks Hank! (Especially for actually giving specific numbers!) It's especially interesting as someone who only uses tumblr, which has made me allergic to ads. I'd be interested to see some kind of discussion on what's going on with that, since they've recently just, given up on the platform or something? Not sure of any specifics, but from what I've heard it's a pretty weird situation!
From what I've gathered about Tumblr the part that got cut was the group handling the new things like Tumblr live (which is literally blocked by everyone but the US because privacy issues) and twitterification attempts on the dash (some people dashboards were changed to look basically like Twitter on desktop which everyone hated and immediately found ways to edit the site elements to force it back into its og state) because of how poorly that went. Tumblr itself seems to be as fine as it ever was.
There are still problems with staff applying ban rules to queer content that doesn't violate their own ToS and the strong rules against anything even vaguely porn-shaped has kept a lot of artists away, but yeah: despite losing truckloads of money every year, I hope tumblr remains exactly as weird and algorithm-free as it is now.
speaking as strictly a viewer, I'm always at least confused and at most infuriated by how video platforms are constantly changing what they want to be. This is a long video site, but now we're rolling out short videos, and the short video site is going to make longer videos. This other site isn't even really a video site, but rather an everything site conglomerate, and its videos are slightly shorter than the shortest allowed video on the short video si- STOP. PLEASE STOP.
Fun fact: used to be, it was impossible to upload a video longer than 5 minutes on RU-vid. Had to have an account that was flagged to do so, making you very special in that time.
It's because every site wants to be everything and outcompete everyone else at their own game. Monopoly, or the closest thing that is allowed by law, is the end goal of every large company.
Fun fact: the tiktok shop thing is actually a huge thing in china already. There's many influencers who have made a whole career out of what is essentially social media telemarketing
Fascinating. So the business has had plenty of time to work out the kinks. Implying that the way it is being used now is the way that TikTok would like it to keep being used.
I would love to see a deep dive into the scary ways people are advertising products on TikTok shop. I don't use the platform but the things I have seen from other creators makes me nervous
Thank you SO MUCH for talking candidly about money and especially income. I wish it were more normalized. As well as satisfying some of my curiosity of the logistics and income of being a content creator. Neat stuff.
Not everyone can be a talented creator like Hank. Some get stuck at sub 100,000 views forever and barely make any money. Shorts are ok but longs take so much time and effort it’s like a full time job. If it’s not making money like a full time job, it would not be worth doing it.
Yup. More views equals more money. Not every creator makes the same. I don't think anyone believes that. Some people do work full time and make videos for fun though. Not just for the money.
If this is something you continue to explore (knowing Hank's proclivities, it is hehe) you might find something useful from Safiya Nygaards video about a dress she bought from several different tiktok ads and the rabbit hole of stealing and scammery she found on the way. This whole topic has become very interesting to me despite actively not engaging with most short form content & the platforms that host it (infinite scroll is bad for my brain).
RU-vid Shorts still work really great for me on my second channel. I mean, I am just small content creator and I work really hard (I also use a little bit of fame ster, but that's a necessity nowadays). I just give all my videos small initial boost, and that caused them to spread literally everywhere, bringing more and more organic views day after day.
That's possible but I think it was more about the views to money ratio than actual amount of views on any platform. Because the RU-vid and Tiktok views numbers were pretty close, right? (Well, as much as millions are close.) Like the algorithms and how you get views is a different discussion I think.
I mean, he is famous, and he runs PBS Aeons, Journey To The Microcosm, Crash Course, Sci Show, and whatever else I missed. So he has people in school tapping into his shows for school learning and those who are not in school watching some for personal interest. He's in an interesting pocket.
The US actually hates small businesses. Back around 2015-16 when affiliate marketing was hot. I was in this marketing program with kids that was making thousands every week. it lasted for about three months. People was making money off of Facebook promote button on their personal profiles. We will make a post and simply just press promote on Facebook and the reach you would get for only five dollars was crazy. For five dollars, You could get 5 to 10 sign-ups. Then boom, they removed the button and implement a whole new technical and analytical advertisement system that was super hard to understand for the normal person. Ruining everyone’s business.
Safiya Nygaard did a really good dive into people stealing images and content reviewing higher quality products to sell cheap knock offs. Definitely worth a watch as part of the conversation about Tik Tok shop.
I think that the problem with people doing RU-vid, or any type of content creation, is lack of strategy. They come up with ideas and upload them and post them straight away. They may be motivated for a couple months and may upload 40 videos in that time. 40 videos could be 40 or 20 weeks instead of 2/3 months. Batch and post consistently (and use a little bit of Famester to make it even easier). Don't post everything straight away post it on the same day/time every week. This also helps avoid burn out...
Mmhm. It can also help give you padding if there's ever a couple weeks you can't work. If you have two or three videos in the hopper, it isn't the end of the world if you get sick or take a vacation or something.
i mean, i hate my issues with meta, but as someone who does socials for a living (on a marketing level, not a creator), it's easier to just go and set it up then leave the platform. with tiktok, i feel stuck in a horrible loop of false information about many different topics. and it's so much harder to actually get the algorithm in your favor, because it keeps pushing you semi-related content. it's probably great for rabbit holes, but ugh. on yt shorts, i see clips of comtent creators I usually watch (i get a lot of gmm shorts). if anything, the rise of tiktok and it's neverending feed machine made me so upset that j lowkey stopped using social media. it's like reddit for gen z, aka awful. now that i know how much money tiktoks can make from rage watching, i'll likely never going back. glad you're making cash, but like, that means creators i hate also benefit more than they did before. thanks but no thanks. ps: everyone should watch safiya's video on TikTok shop fakes
Unfortunately on the creator side of things, the Instagram/meta experience is not great. The algorithm changes frequently and pushes ads aggressively, so it's hard to get consistent engagement. I'm an artist, and Instagram was falling behind Twitter (before Elon) because all of a sudden you'd get 12 likes on something you used to get hundreds on, and at some point it stopped showing people your posts. As a user, it's also impossible to find things on instagram -- tik tok has a great search function at least, while Instagram has been nerfing their hashtags and search function for years now. Honestly, both platforms suck for me, especially because Insta is pushing reels so much, same ragebait content and inflammatory comments... Ps I watched safiyas vid a while ago and it was honestly insane. I see it everywhere now, even Amazon has been turning into cheap fakes recently
I love asking people to fight nicely. Clearly he knew asking us to not fight was impossible lol... Well hats off to you Hank! I will endeavor to fight nicely in the future!
I love headspace, I’m so glad you collaborated with them. Nerdfighters, I highly recommend everyone to get a headspace. Also that transition to the sponsord content was awesome. I love Hank losing his mind to then headspace. Reminds me of Olivia’s chaos into I’m grateful all the time lol.
I can't believe you pay for an app to tell you to meditate. Did you know that books exist? It's a free skill, that literally anyone can just learn. You have anxiety because you lack introspection and live a life more demanding than needed, then were sold a cure that was freely available to you. Grats. You're just another product simp.
how I create extra head space space: do laundry on the same specific day every week and when doing laundry not talk to anyone online unless there is an emergency - it's like an artificial church service - the holy laundry haha
They made Shorts to limit the viewer... you can't control the volume... you can't control the speed... it's in portrait (yechh)... you don't even get to see who the creator is unless their thumbnail shows you. I hate Shorts, don't do TT.
Good job Hank, you said "Subscribe" in a weird enough way that RU-vid's new(?) feature to flash the subscribe button when the video says so missed the cue :P I did anyway though, didn't realize I hadn't already.
Thank you! I love the transparency! As many other viewers, I hate being interrupted by annoying ads - but I would like to support the creators I appreciate! It's not a very smooth experience to go looking for the missing seconds on another platform, remembering to like & share whatever version on whatever platform 😅, and hopefully not lose it over a stupid ad mid-task... Oh what was I doing 🤔 I should go do my dishes now! May just one more cutekittyshort first...
Still bizarre to me that people actually swipe through RU-vid Shorts. I watch them from my subscriptions feed, and when I'm done with one, I go back to the subscriptions feed and choose the next one. I prefer choosable video to swipable video.
@@snoozley853 I don't think it is irrational to want to avoid yet another social media platform. I can't speak for @Leggir but for me it really is about the time that I already waste on other sites. I just don't want to give more of that to tiktok.
I will say that i hate the shorts video player. not being able to rewind 5s because i missed something is painful because it means i have to rewatch it up until the same part
All i want is a way to automatically play Shorts in the regular RU-vid video player! I don't think that's too much to ask!!! Actually, now that I think about it, I could probably figure out how to make a browser plugin for that.
@@vigilantcosmicpenguin8721 In browser all you have to do is replace /shorts/ in the URL with /watch/ so, yeah, should be pretty simple to set up some way to do that automatically. There's already a few chrome extensions for it, I'm sure some of them fully automate it, though I can't vouch for any of them since I just do it manually as needed. Sounds like a neat little project to figure out yourself, not sure if the mobile URLs function any differently.
its very important to recognise the creativity program and old creator fund are limit for countries. I from australia and there is no way to make money from videos from just views on tiktok. The creativity program is only available in U.S., U.K., Brazil, France, Germany, Japan, and Korea
Wait so with the seaweed pills example would the manufacturer be paying creators, or is Tiktok paying the content creator to sell just anyone else's goods? I assume you meant the latter, because otherwise the manufacturer of supplements would still be liable for what the content creators say - but then I'm not sure what Tiktok gets? Are they just going to pay creators to get people used to shopping on Tiktok? Fascinating but confusing stuff!
I didn’t really understand how TikTok’s product incentives are a good idea on any level. There are already so many scammy / scummy endorsements by unscrupulous content creators. Leaning into that even more sounds like a disaster from the jump.
Glad to see your reaction to Facebook is similar to mine Hank! Thanks for sharing this, as an advertiser it's very interesting. One thing that might have caused the increase in RU-vid Short CPM may be seasonality, as it is peak shopping season in most of the world. It would be interesting if you did this again at the end of March for example. Congrats on the all clear as well.
i love youtube longs ahah i actually uninstalled instagram because of reels being added, call me old schooled but I viscerally hate shortform swipeable vertical video content :))
I'm still annoyed at the google+ integration. It messed up the comment section and I was never as active in vlogbrothers comments again. Even after it was "fixed" years later.
This dropshipping/MLM/teleshopping kinda marketing is INSANELY popular in China right now. No surprise TikTok is trying to establish it in the rest of the world.
This is super interesting. I have no idea how common this is but as a RU-vid premium subscriber the ONLY ads I see on RU-vid are merch shelves/products featured in this video. Which even show up attached to related/recommended videos that I’ve never watched. So it’s always interesting to hear about how these advertising systems work. Which I believe Shorts on RU-vid has a shifting relationship with, or at least seems from a user side to behave in a changing way on shorts.
I *LOVE* that you made this video & are so forthright about what you are making & what they are paying- And You're well known and speak more than opinion!! Your bids require RESEARCH, and FACTS!! Honestly: this video makes today's crazy world a little less Crazy. Thank You.
Hank, I am a lurker, not a commenter. Thank you for the way you have overseen Awesome Socks. When I asked to end my subscription, you and your team responded and helped within a day.
On the Instagram views thing, it would be very easy to write a script that gets the views for every video uploaded and pushes that to a database. Running that every day (or even multiple times per day) would get you a daily (or more) datapoint for every video, allowing you to then pull all data points by video. I'm a software developer myself and I've done things like this, it really is a 'weekend project' that could be super helpful to a lot of creators.
I've always known that successful RU-vidrs and content creators made really good money. But without fail every time they reveal how much they make I'm blown away at how high it actually is!
My subscribe button lit up when you said "Subscribe" . The only reason I clicked. Of all the changes RU-vid has made over the years, this one seems so inconsequential, but it's made my day.
Thank you for sharing your spirals with us. You and John both doing it does wonders for keeping everything grounded, I think. Best of luck with this battle though. It does sound like... a lot.
This is the first I've heard of TikTok Shop and it's really fascinating, in a way. That's the kind of thing I never would have predicted, but in hindsight seems like it was the optimal move for the people who came up with it. I wonder what kind of thought went into that decision and how much of an experiment it is.
I’ve always loved how transparent both of the brothers have been financially, but Hank takes it to a whole new level with his more breakdowny, educational content. I’m sure it’s majorly helpful for small creators and it’s definitely fun for nerds!
Despite my name, short content is kind of a chore for me. Especially since I'm exclusively covering content that's formatted in 16:9 and have to cram that into a vertical orientation. All of that extra work is rewarded with a fraction of the CPM and an entirely different and seemingly unpredictable algorithm dance that I still don't know how to work with. But I figure with how popular that format is, we're all going to have to get used to shilling products.
Would be interested to hear your take on Safiya Nygaards recent video about sus tiktok advertising from scammy drop ship websites. not 100% related, butttt yeah tik tok is obviously not concerned about quality control.
It‘s always weird to me how we don‘t recognize how much of a crap platform all these are. They regularly have scam ads, which they definitely have the power to prevent but actively choose not to, because it makes more revenue..
GREAT product placement Hank! Seriously - that was sooo perfect! lol - GREAT sponsor, GREAT timing, just GREAT! Best commercial I've experienced, maybe ever. LOL
I love that Hank is still so annoyed by Zuckerberg's BS after making him basically the villain of his novels is peak petty and I'm here for it lol. Never change King.
I am an educator of future educators and I want to use one of these for an assignment in the my cornerstone course. Cannot use the clock app, but am now interested in YT shorts because I need to know how many views it gets and I didn't know insta didn't do this easily for creators....suggestions....
Perfect ending. Also I found a Chrome extension that forces Shorts to open in the regular video player for anyone else who wants to have a not-terrible user experience while watching them (including BEING ABLE TO TO CONTROL THE PLAYBACK holy FUCK I cannot fathom why that's not part of the Shorts player even on browser).
Also, Tiktok only monitises the views from the "For You" feed, not the "Following" feed. Ridiculous! It's all people advertising weird things on the For You feed
