I live in Texas, in one of the more affordable big cities to live in the US, and $800 a month for rent gives you an old, stinky apartment in a bad neighborhood with no grocery stores nearby. The fact that you managed to find $800 a month in NY is amazing. I totally admire the way you spend your money on trips. A lot of people tend to waste a lot of money on tourist places, which are always very expensive and often not worth it. I think the best way to appreciate the city is to do what you do: try to live like a local and appreciate the smaller details.
