Always appreciate Tim's transparency of (super)car ownership. £420,000 over 18 years is a bit over £23,300 per year driving and enjoying 36 different and interesting cars. Sure £2k per month is not a small amount of money in depreciation but actually not as much as I expected owning that many cars, many of them simultaneously.

When you hear all the hate for ‘flippers’ of cars this puts things in perspective. I feel the Zenvo may put the Senna loss to shame some day. @ep1981
@ep1981 Год назад
@@peash2097 If you buy a car for $100 and sell it for $250, the gain ($150) is in most countries subject to some sort of tax, generally called capital gains tax. If you gave a second car that you bought also for $100 and you sell it for $90, in most countries your loss ($10) can be offset against the gains you made on the first car. Your total gain across both sales is $140 ($150 less $10), and your tax is calculated on that amount. Obviously in the real world things are more complicated than that, but you get the idea. Note this is different from a salary, where generally if you earn $100 of salary you pay tax on that $100 even if you then spend most of it on food, lodging, etc. - with some important exceptions that vary wildly by country you generally can't deduct your living expenses from your salary for tax purposes.

Very candid and thanks. Not many car guys would lay it all out in such detail. Now in my case, I bought a Porsche 550RS Spyder complete but in rough shape for $40,000 in 1986. I spent about $65,000 restoring it to perfection, and it really was perfect with original engine and transmission, when I finished. That was about 1998, and collector car prices were down compared to earlier years. In 2000, I foolishly sold it into a down market for $275,000. In 2018, my car was sold by its then owner at auction at Monterey, for $4.5M. This sometimes keeps me up at night, but like you I am philosophical. I had fun with it.

I missed this video when you posted it somehow. It’s really interesting all the information going all the way back to the beginning. I really think you have made out well considering the use and enjoyment you have gained from all of these cars. I didn’t realize how many awesome cars you had the pleasure of experiencing. I was taken aback hearing how short a stint you have had with some of your cars. Considering all the great cars you have had the pleasure of owning/driving/living with. The main thing I see missing through all of this is the actual use value of the use you have had and how you have been able to share with all of your fans/followers. The thing I started thinking about as you went through the stats of each of the great cars was I wish I would have been able to be the one buying the ones you traded on. One thing I kept waiting to hear was the status of the McLaren Senna. I thought you had sold it already, I don’t think I would be able to part with it, that would be really hard for me. Hypercars are not that easy to acquire and I would think they would be keepers. I believe it would be best to make more content with it, and see how the value would change over time. Right now it seems as though the market is down on most everything. It doesn’t seem to be a time to sell most luxury goods. Just a thought, you seem to be doing pretty well on your own.

This was very interesting video Tim. I’m glad you shared your experience with buying and selling. Mercedes, BMW and especially Aston Martin have heavy depreciation. Your Ford GT if you decide to sell will recoup most of your losses over the years🤔 I really like the new DB12. Saw one at Scottsdale Aston dealership was on display. However will wait at least a year after they are released before purchasing. I’m waiting now for Chevrolet dealer to submit for my 2024 Eray to Chevrolet . As always your the best when it comes to cars. Always look forward for your new video.👍

Interesting position be in. I sense accepting these losses is a necessary part of being successful in the specific business you're in. You could, to my mind, perhaps have strategically bought expensive cars that would have depreciated a lot less, safer options (older models). But then your business would likely suffer as you would never have had the same quality cars to make the content that has helped in your success. You took a risk and the model works for you. And you're having lots of fun. Good for you.

The obvious thing is to buy second-hand after the initial hype dies down, but a video about a two-year-old car is going to generate a lot less views. Since so many of his videos are about new car introductions, fancy collections, carspotting, trips, etc. maybe Tim doesn't have to keep ordering new cars. Hey @Shmee150, "Here's how much I could have saved assembling the current Shmuseum if I had timed each car's purchase perfectly" would be an interesting video.

Very interesting and scary numbers but the enjoyment and experiences is something you can't put a price on. So continue to enjoy Tim may you have many more interesting and good cars and drives and hopefully not as much losses.

The price crash in Senna is so violent, I think I saw one advertised at GBP600k last year. Heck, even here in Indonesia the price tumbled hard, there's this one guy who actually bought TWO. One MSO car for his personal collection and one 'base' car for him to modify and drive during weekend. It's insane how badly Senna did in used car market. I mean GBP700k today is still A LOT of money, but when we came from the base GBP750k MSRP back in 2017, that is a terrifying loss of money.

Hey Tim! I know that you do business with these cars but keep in mind that manufacturers are not hedge fund companies. You don’t buy cars to flip them for profit. At the end of the day cars are products that will lose value after some years of use. It’s like buying a brand new TV. Will it cost the same after six months of use? Certainly no!

Your business accumen is crazy great in these car investments and sales, considering that is what you have build your online business and pressence around. The cost spread out over the years, is almost only the equvilent of the cost of owning one some what expensive car :)

What a great (and interesting) thing to do Tim and thanks for the honesty. Some truly enormous figures even for a numbers wizard like yourself. I guess even knowing what happens to most car values, especially from new, my take away from this video is summarised with one word...WOW! Even if I'd had the cash to go out and change my 2008 car, I would have held off because to me the era of the artificially inflated new and used prices had to come back down by some realistic margin, so when I saw a video strongly suggesting by the end of this year (2023) we will probably see a significant if not huge drop in the aforementioned prices, i formed a cautious smile. I'm just hoping that my car does me proud and lasts for as long as needs be now. Take care.

Thanks Tim, such a great video. You recommended me to buy an FF after your trip to New Zealand, and I have now completed 12, 000 miles in the car with no issues. Trade in time is overdue now [covid] so may go for a Ferrari super fast or Lusso. Thanks for the tip, such a great car, and many memorable miles. Cheers.

Really interesting video. Genuine and honest view of behind the scenes monetary dealings. Losses have to be seen in context of how much revenue the cars have generated from content.
