@@SebsPlaceYT It does rock but yes, at that time it felt somewhat antiquated compared to the Mega Drive. Still, it beat the Dragon 32 I was rocking.

The MegaPC worked as a marketing strategy though, rather than buying a good pc without a Megadrive for similar money you instead bought an outmoded 386 (in 1993? Seriously Alan Sugar?) Fitted with what was essentially a Megadrive on a card! I know not 1 but 2 people that had one as a child, needless to say neither survived!

I only properly relax after putting a video out when you leave a comment mate. I wait for them. And as usual you didn't disappoint. I think the Vic20 is a suprise in this list that they held the price quite high late on. Great memories mate.

Blimey, this video has been out 8 months, done okish on views, I must have watched it fifty times to check everything was correct and boom. Wrong date on the G7000. @@SebsPlaceYT Particularly, the 7800 wasn't limited by tile-mapping. It had a video processor similar to ANTIC, the one in the Atari 8-bit computer line, that could apply different parameters to each scanline, including changing resolution. The chip actually ran it's own machine code, in it's own language, albeit simple, but very versatile. In some ways quicker than tilemap, since you could change whole regions of the screen with just a few bytes. The lines were bitmapped. That can be slower to move graphics around on, but it's much more versatile, and there were still sprites. You can very much tell that the NES uses a tilemapped screen, every game looks the same in that way. Much less variety than real computer games of the time. Would've been nice if Atari hadn't considered 160 horizontal pixels to be a usable resolution, cos it really isn't, it's ugly. Good enough for the 2600 in the 1970s! It can do 320 though with colour. Actually that's probably because the machine was back-compatible with the 2600, a foolish decision in retrospect, though if they'd launched it in 1984. It was officially launched in 1986 but didn't get any sort of push til a couple of years later when it wasn't good enough. The sound is exactly the same as the 2600s, again '70s technology and awful. Also for compatibility, they should have just dropped that. Compatibility is also the reason the SNES has a crippled, slow, 8-bit CPU instead of a proper decent one like the Megadrive. In the end Nintendo abandoned NES compatiblity for the SNES, but the hardware is all in there, necessarily compromised, so third parties made NES adaptors easily. It's interesting to read the technical manuals for these things online. STELLA.DOC is a classis for the 2600, and the 7800's docs are out there too. They were written by the engineers, for games programmers to understand the system, and it really gives you the thinking behind the machines. Even if you don't understand everything you'll likely still be impressed and illuminated by what's there. Gives you an understanding of the scene at the time in general.

Interesting. If you bought it at the beginning of the year, then it's feasible as the 199 price was for Christmas 96. But yeah 100 quid drop is quite big!!!

I bought the £99 Dual Shock Pack PSX in 1998, got a nice discount on a memory card and controller too, gave it straight to my mate who returned it to me the next day chipped with a stack of CDRs with all the top titles of the day! Bought it with my own money I earned being a slave in a kitchen at a restaurant part time at the age of 17! I have only ever been gifted 2 consoles, my Sega Dreamcast from my best mate and my Sony PlayStation 5 (phat disc) from my wife and I have anything that isn't a Nintendo, Sega fanboy til I die!

Yeah. Those mega drive games like virtual racing that had extra chips in them were off the chart expensive compared to now!
