It seems that was a very profitable day! How do you decide what stones to go looking for each day? Do you go over an area like this for several days until you feel you have searched all the likely places before going somewhere else, or do you constantly change between opals and sapphires and other things? I would have a hard time ever leaving a stream where a day's search resulted in that many gems.
@LizKreate
@LizKreate 10 лет назад
Hi NightHawkInLight, Prospecting is mostly a weekend activity for us in the areas nearby. Most of these sapphire deposits are fairly substantial and would require a long time to completely dig out. We therefore go back to the same spot for many occasions. Opal, Peridot, Garnet and the other gems we search are not nearby and requires for us to travel further a field, which means planning a trip for a few weeks or months. We set ourselves a limit to how much gems we collect. Our vehicle can only carry so much....lol Thanks for your comment and wish you all the best, Liz

Do we get to see the blue green sapphire cut and finished, ooh please Liz I want to know? I love the way you add facts and info as well, very helpful. One thing I always wondered though. Rubies, Sapphire, are meant to be aluminium oxide or "corundum", I believe emeralds are beryl? Are they the same hardness and the same material and just named differently? Is beryl aluminium oxide?
@LizKreate
@LizKreate 5 лет назад
Hi Bradley, I think Beryl is short for beryllium aluminum cyclosilicate with hardness of 8. The different colors are due to trace amounts of different minerals making them Emerald or Aquamarine as an example. And Corundum is aluminium oxide with hardness of 9. Sapphire and Ruby are gem quality corundum with different trace mineral for the color. Cheers, Liz

hey hello!!1 I'm new in this, I've been reading tons of information about gems and I found it amazing, I totally fell in love with this... I´m from Mexico and acording to my research there are about 20 mines near by my city, companies are getting some riolit, quarry and that kind of stuff and as a subproduct they are getting topaz, 2-15 cm topaz, I know is not an expensive stone but I got really excited about the idea of going out and find some beautiful ones :) wish me luck!!! I have also remember that I have been always atractted by all kind of stones, and as a child I grew up in a small town surronded by trees and small rivers and big rivers too, I perfectly remember those little black stones that you call spinels but I'm not sure they are spinel, I mean they are all intense black but how do I know they are spinels? Thanks for your videos guys, I admire you both and I hope you can help me with that spinel's doubt... sorry for my english I did my best
@LizKreate
@LizKreate 8 лет назад
+Axel Lara Hi Axel, You're english is just perfect. Good to see a young fellow like yourself wanting to go out there and find gemstones yourself, not for the value but for the enjoyment of the hunt. Black spinels has a hardness of 8 on the moh scale. A scratch test using a piece of quartz or glass (hardness 7), is one indication. The spinel should be able to scratch the glass and leave a mark, but the quartz won't scratch the spinel. Black pinel will leave a glassy look on the surfaced when chipped. I have a photo of a rough, chipped and faceted spinel on my website. Link below. It's the second photo thumbnail. I wish you all the very best of luck and Happy Hunting. +yourtub It is possible to find gem quality sapphires(Corundum) that are over 1000 carats, but they are rare as hens teeth and that's why they are worth a lot of money. The opaque or non gem quality sapphires/ruby are referred to as Corundum(mineral), and they have been found to be as big as 152 kg. They are quite abundant and are use for making sandpaper and grinding wheels. Cheers, Liz

Hi Felcas, Sorry for the late reply. Just found your comment. We only do this as a hobby and don't know where or who to sell them to. I've set-up my website to sell some of our finds to our RU-vid subscribers, who wants to purchase natural gemstones from us. Cheers, Liz

what is the diffrece betwen "spinail" and the sapphire? by the way, i just love your videos!
@grantschuhmacher7766
@grantschuhmacher7766 7 лет назад
Sapphire is 9 on the hardness scale, spinel is 8, so they are both fairly heavy.
@lukaurbankitek6019
@lukaurbankitek6019 7 лет назад
thanks. Honestly, I did not expect such slight diffrence.

luka urban kitek I think she's just comparing their mass. She explains that when heavy rain hits a area, they both tend to sink to the bottom of the hill, and spinels are more plentiful compared to sapphires.

How do you find out how many carats and money your sapphire is worth
@LizKreate
@LizKreate 8 лет назад
+Too Technical There are scales that weighs in carats. The value of Sapphires depends on a lot of factors such as weight, color and clarity. Thanks for watching. Cheers, Liz

Cool video Liz... can I find Sapphires anywhere near Geelong , Victoria...? or other cool gems ?
@LizKreate
@LizKreate 8 лет назад
+Anthony Magic Hi Anthony, There are a lot of areas in Victoria where sapphires are found, but I'm not familiar with exactly where Geelong is. There's a book called "Gem Minerals of Victoria" by William D. Berch and Dermot A. Henry, that covers different sapphire localities (Other gems too) in Victoria. Happy hunting. Cheers, Liz

+treyshroud There are a lot of Emerald, Ruby, Mines that charge small amounts for 5 gallon buckets of material from their mines, keep what you find. Fees are very minimal.. under $10. sometimes less.

Hi Floda, The best advice i can give you to help you fast track your prospecting skills would be to join the "Prospecting Australia Forum". All of your questions will be answered on this forum and much info can be resourced from within it's topics. All the best, Liz

Australia answer to the Herkimer Diamonds...Bowen Basin Coal mining country...two hours west of Mackay QLD is Moranbah a mining town....main mining is coal and csg although it sits near a volcanic lava flow track, ground around the place rich in gold indicators, quartz agate ironstone etc as well as old school tells for gold rich ground.....also has the Moranbah Diamond, unclassified as yet but hardness close to sapphires. It cuts n facets beautifully.....and is a sought after souvenier.

Liz Kreate ur so freaking awesome.... Where are you finding all these gems, and is it possible to find gems in South Florida, and how much are amethyst worth plzzz respond
@LizKreate
@LizKreate 9 лет назад
Yu-gi-oh destroyer We only prospect in Australia and have never been to South Florida. In general Amethyst on their own are not worth that much compared to other precious gemstones and the value varies according to size, color and rarity of the piece. Thanks for watching and commenting. Wish you all the very best. Cheers, Liz

@LizKreate
@LizKreate 8 лет назад
+Desiree Wadsworth "Spinel" is a gemstone that comes in different colors. Black Spinel or Black Jack is what I'm referring to in this video; makes an outstanding black opaque gemstone for jewelry due to it's high luster. Thanks for watching Desiree and wish you all the very best. Cheers, Liz
